Aqueduct (New York):
  • Opening Day: The meet expires December 31 but racing will continue at Aqueduct until Saratoga opens in July 2024.
  • Repeat Winners: Luis Rivera, Jr. and Jose Gomez both won twice. Most of New York's big-name riders are in Santa Anita. If Rivera makes headlines as he did today, he could be a finalist for Apprentice of the Year.
  • Race 9: Bertrille (Luis Rivera, Jr./Bruce Brown) stunned at 100-to-1 in an 11-horse finale. The winner paid $202.50. The $1 exacta $588.50. The $1 Pick 3 $13,000. The $1 double $1,300. Young sire Vino Rosso, who won the 2019 Breeders' Cup Classic, finished 1-2.

  • Eric Cancel rode three times. Entering today, he had just two mounts, since suffering a broken foot and more in mid-July.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Sheldon-Russell-Brittany Russell teamed twice and both horses were victorious. The expected ritual of Bittany holding her child every time in the winner's circle and usually to await victorious Sheldon is precious. I don't know how many trainers make that effort but the Russell visual is Rockwellain.
    • Race 6: Murray won by more than four lengths. Brittany seems to have a plan with the horse, once under the attention of Bob Baffert in California, with a start each of the past three months in allowance races. The $2 exacta was over $128....with a 2-to-1 on top. A bomber placed at 25-to-1.

  • Race 8: Binnie was sent off the favorite and won by two lengths in a debut. From last to first.

Churchill (Kentucky):
  • Race 7: Mink's Palace (Luis Saez/Eddie Kenneally) won the $120,000 MSW at 9-to-1inna debut outing
  • Tyler Gaffalione had another winner today and now leads the young meet with seven victories. Churchill runs into November 26 and then will be dark until Kentucky Derby week.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Antonio Fresu won with his first three rides.
  • Race 9: Diamonds Danzing (Mike Smith/Lorenzo Campuzano) gave the trainer his 63rd lifetime win. I don't know much of him but he had Smith ride his horse and that says something.

She is not built like most 2-year-old fillies. Tamara was a disappointment, she may not want to go two turns.
whenever i see a favorite going off at even money or less in a big field and it will be the first time trying 2 turns at a different track i'll always take a shot and go against it. granted, the 2 horses i picked were also trying 2 turns for the first time as well but to me they both showed potential upside and was very possible to be in the picture.

the one i'm most pissed off about was not playing fierceness. irad off johnny v on, which leads me to wonder how often does a horse pop off a win after someone else replaces irad. i used to do this with jose santos and garret gomez.

Gomez could ride with anyone....when he was focused. Tragic figure.

Looking at my notes, no jockey or trainer won more than once today during the SA card.

Even the heartiest handicapper has struggled. When I watch the pre-race feeds, I generally look at when a horse is singled. That's it. Otherwise, too much minutia and race-day bias is absent from making such picks when hosts go four deep.

That’s a tough interview to have to end it because there’s an inquiry. This can’t be a DQ.
