Keeneland race 6 has 2-year-old females many of whom are out for the first time. Sweet Sunshine has the imposing combo of Florent Geroux and Brad Cox. The Hard Spun homebred by Godolphin has a 5-1 m/l. Cox has strong numbers with 2-year-olds and other categories that involves this race.

16 entered but I would expect no more than 12 to race.

The 6th race at Keeneland -- mentioned above -- turned into one of the biggest upsets in the history of Keeneland. Still awaiting prices but it appears an 88-1 topped a 13-1 and a 43-1.

$36k for the $.10 super.

The story gets better. The rider is a 10-pound bug from Lexington. Attends U. Kentucky as an engineering student. Home town rider.

Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Off the Turf: Another day with no turf racing.
  • Manny Franco rode three winners. He ended the day 4 3-0-1. He is tied with Irad Ortiz, Jr. atop the leader board for wins by a jockey this meet, closing day is October 29.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgard Zayas won a race for the 17th straight card.
  • Miguel Vasquez won three times.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 6: Cozee Rage (Andres Calleja/Brian Michael) won the $100,000 MSW in a debut thriller that some labeled one of the biggest upsets in the track's history. The field of 12 was limited to 2-year-old fillies and the winner, a daughter to Union Rags, won for fun by three lengths. Exotics were astronomical including a $1 exacta for more than $1,400, a $.50 tri for $5,500+ and a $1 double for $959. But the biggest and baddest number was the $.10 super for $36,000 with 88-1, 13-1, 43-1 and 4-1 on that ticket. The 22-year-old 10-pound bug jockey attended high school in Lexington. He has four lifetime wins in 82 starts, the three prior came at Cincinnati's Belterra Park. The small-stable trainer is based in Kentucky and plies his craft mostly at midwestern tracks.

  • Race 7: Tony Ann (Flavien Prat/Phil D'Amato) won the $350,000 Grade 2 Franklin Stakes in an upset as overwhelming favorite Caravel (Tyler Gaffalione/Brad Cox) placed. Prat should be an Eclipse Award finalist for 2023 as one of the three best riders in North America. He could even challenge for supremacy but eventually time will tell. The $1 double paid over $1,400. The $.50 Pick 3 was an exorbitant $8,400+. Tony Ann paid $17.60. She won a graded stakes for the first time in three times and won for the 5th time in 10 starts.
1697414734925.png

  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 5 returned an enormous $190,000+.
Albuquerque Downs (New Mexico):
  • Card: Six of the ten races were stakes with four holding purses of $100,000 or more including the feature at $1.2 million.
  • Race 9: Bella de Ball (Alan Hernandez/Wesley Giles) won the $1.2 million New Mexico State fair Quarter Horse Futurity.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 3: I Feel the Need (Corey Lanerie/Chris Hartman) gave the jockey his 5,000th lifetime win. Lanerie is 48 years of age, He is the 38th North American jockey to reach the milestone. His 4,999th win came October 1 at Churchill Downs.

1697673604911.png

  • Races 9-10: Luan Machado-Ben Colebrook teamed twice and both horses were victorious to complete the late daily double.
  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 6 returned over $50,000.
  • Tyler Gaffalione and Luis Saez now share the leader board with 12 victories apiece. Though mostly for bragging rights, the two have formed a competitive rivalry in recent years. Both could receive votes for Jockey of the Year in North America. The meet ends October 28.
Horseshoe Indianapolis (Indiana):
  • Pick 5: Paid $64,232.65

Remington (Oklahoma):
  • Canceled: Much of the card was canceled following an injury to jockey Gustavo Herrera in a post parade. An injury update seems positive.

Plainridge (Massachusetts):
  • Race 10: The finale had a 55-to-1 win. Same odds completed a superfecta; however, the bet paid out to winner/all/all/all. Roughly $42 for a $.20 bet. In other words, no one came close.
Belmont at Aqudeuct (New York):
  • Danse Macabre (Adam Beschizza/Kelsey Danner) was sent off the favorite and won the $150,000 Glen Cove Stakes. I don't recall the jockey or trainer at NYRA tracks prior to today, more so the rider.

  • Jamie Ness added three wins in a 5 3-1-1 day at Laurel and Delaware combined. He is the second winningest trainer in North America this year, just 35 behind Steve Asmussen.
Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Off the Turf: Once again, inclement weather has hurt New York. All turf racing was moved to dirt. Handle down. This cannot help New York's future bid at landing a Breeders' Cup. The weather was hurtful in the past when the area held the most important weekend in North America. But 2023 has been nightmarish for NYRA. The aura of New York and a refurbished Belmont will be a selling point but the weather is cause for concern.
  • Race 4: Most of All (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott), in a most successful performance, won by more than 10 lengths under a hand ride by Alvarado who picked up the mount earlier in the day.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 8: Raging Sea (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won handily. There was an ominous stat mentioned by DRF's Marcus Hersch prior to the race that runners in the 2022 Bredders' Cup Juvenile Fillies race were a combined 0-for-43 since. Now 1-for-44.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 7: Carmenootz (Teneca Wolfe/Orane Scott) won at 24-to-1 and gave the jockey her 9th lifetime win and first since 2020.

The latest update towards construction of Belmont...

While dealing with the day-to-day issues of today's racing, Kozak and his crew are also working toward the construction of a rejuvenated Belmont Park with a modern grandstand and new dirt, turf, and Tapeta racing surfaces.
In all likelihood, racing will not resume at Belmont Park until 2026 or 2027 and work is underway now, with construction of the Tapeta course, and the building of three tunnels to the infield (with one completed) and a pond with a pump station for irrigation.
Besides a backstretch tunnel that is in place, two frontside tunnels will be built near the clubhouse gap to the racetrack for horses and the sixteenth pole for pedestrians. Work has already started on the clubhouse tunnel and construction of the grandstand tunnel is expected to start in mid-November.

Big Rock (France) and King of Steel (USA) won Breeders' Cup Challenge Series races today at Ascot (England).

The former is the QE II Stakes.

Frankie Dettori smooching the latter on the schnoz in the winner's circle is telling if not amusing.

These are the final Breeders' Cup Challenge Series races for 2023.

  • Jamie Ness is 10 5-2-1 the past three days. He is second in victories in North America this year.
  • Philadelphia Phillies had a good day with Ashburn Alley and a horse owned by Jayson Werth victorious.
  • Gun Runner keeps on ticking off the track.
Ascot (England):
  • Card: Approximately $5 million in purse money covering six races including five Group I.
  • Race 4: Big Rock won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" connection.

  • Race 5: King of Steel (Frankie Dettori/Roger Varian) won the Qipco Champion Stakes, a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" connection. Dettori kissed the winning horse on the nose multiple times in the winner's circle. It is likely Dettori's finale at Ascot. Amazing career.

1697948477283.png
Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Jose Ortiz had a 3-win day, twice riding for Linda Rice.
  • Race 9: Ashburn Alley (Jairo Rendon/Kelly Breen), a $135,000 Tapiture filly, broke her maiden in his first race. The horse is named after former baseball player Richie Ashburn.

  • Race 2: Gun Song (Dylan Davis/Mark Hennig) was the lone first-time starter yet prevailed at 6-to-1. The 2-year-old Gun Runner filly is another in the long and ever-growing line of success stories from Gun Runner. What a horse!
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Michael Trombetta (8%) and Claudio Gonzalez (4%) both entered today with horrible numbers this meet.
  • Race 5: Neat (Jeiron Barbosa/Rob Atras) was sent off 13-1, perhaps due to showing absolutely nothing in his only prior race but at Kentucky Downs, yet looked solid,
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Florida Sire Card: Three races at $100,000+.
  • Race 10: Bentornato (Emisael Jaramillo/Jose D'Angelo) won the $200,000 Florida Sire Affirmed Stakes. The trainer had a 3-win day including two wins here and one at Belmont. He is tied with Saffie Joseph, Jr. for most wins at this meet.
  • Race 8: R Harper Rose (Edgard Zayas/Saffie Joseph, Jr.) won the $200,000 Florida Sire Susan's Girl Stakes. The horse is owner in part by former baseball player Jayson Werth and his Two Eight Racing.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Attendance: There appeared to be quite the crowd at inarguably one of America's top tracks.
  • Race 10: Zoombie (Luan Machado/Ryan Walsh) was the second largest odds on the board but won the finale at 44-to-1.
  • Race 9: Vahva (John Velazquez/Cherie DeVaux) won the $350,000 Grade 2 Raven Run Stakes. The 3-year-old Gun Runner filly won for the 4th time in 10 starts.

  • Leading Jockey: Luis Saez has a 1-win advantage over rival Tyler Gaffalione.
  • Leading Trainer: Six trainers have five or six wins led by Todd Pletcher and Brad Cox, the most recent two Eclipse Award winners as Trainer of the Year.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 9: Touch'n Ride (Kazushi Kimura/Layne Giliforte) was put up to victory via DQ following the removal of Solo Album (Sahin Civaci/Mark Casse) to fifth place in the Grade 3 $150,000 Ontario Derby.

Bill Parcells owns two horses at Belmont today that are trained by Melanie Giddings. She of course trained Maple Leaf Mel who suffered a catastrophic injury at Saratoga. In the 9th today, she has Mel's Baby Sister.

In the opener is Ice the Kicker.

Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • No Turf: Once again, racing was removed from turf but originally limited to just two races.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode three winners.
  • Race 1: Ice the Kicker (Junior Alvarado/Melanie Giddings) wired the field to win a debut performance. The trainer has five lifetime wins in her second year as a conditioner.

  • Race 9: Dolomite (Manny Franco/Chad Brown) romped as the favorite in the finale. Mel's Baby Sister (Jose Gomez/Melanie Giddings) broke last and finished sixth out of nine. The $110,000 purchase is owned by Bill Parcells. He also owned Maple Leaf Mel who suffered a devastating injury this summer at Saratoga. Giddings trained both horses as well. Mel's Baby Sister is very green.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 7: Romagna Mia (John Velazquez/Graham Motion) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Dowager Stakes. The winner raced for the second time in North America following 10 races overseas including Naples, Italy where she broke her maiden. She entered with a five-race losing skid. She was purchased or more than $500,000 last year.

  • John Velazquez was 10 2-2-0 the past two days but the Hall of Fame rider won two graded stakes. That could be enough for Jockey of the Week in North America.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 1: Tom Seaver (Antonio Fresu/Phil D'Amato) won the opener in a debut race. Nick Alexander is a legendary owner in southern Cal and has named his horses after former Dodgers' players such as Johnny Podres, Junior Gilliam and Pee Wee Reese but also Catfish Hunter and now Tom Seaver.
