It is a minor league track by comparison to big boys in Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, New York and elsewhere but to lose another facility and in a major city is not a good sign. Turf Paradise's owner (Jerry Simms) said he is locking the doors on October 1 and by state law that means related OTBs -- 37 of them -- will not be permitted to simulcast. Turf has been operating since 1956.

With the extension of Golden Gate's survival until June 30, northern Cal has ongoing discussions with its fair tracks to keep racing ongoing in some capacity and with that, southern Cal should be boosted.

Makes me wonder if the Stronach Group will somehow redirect its interests in Arizona Downs -- as was once mentioned -- to perhaps revitalize the stagnant industry in Arizona. That seems secondary now until Stronach figures out California.

Major locales to lose tracks in recent years include Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Portland, Detroit, Miami, probably New York and maybe Phoenix.

======================
EDIT -- UPDATE:

This article now includes the redevelopment proposal that was discussed weeks ago is apparently dead. Which could be a positive step especially if racing interests can convince the current owner to sell to racing interests...maybe one of them is Stronach? The Stronach Group has a vested interest in simulcasts, and its relationship with the state of Arizona has been boisterous to say the least.

In a memo to employees, track management had indicated the planned sale to James Watson's CT Realty in partnership with Revolutionary Racing had fallen apart. In his comments at an August meeting of the Arizona Racing Commission, Turf Paradise owner Jerry Simms had indicated that Watson had a Sept. 15 deadline to secure financial approvals and had the option to back out up until that deadline. In August, Simms had said it was 50/50 on whether the deal would go forward.
Larry Lucas of Revolutionary Racing, a partner in the proposed purchase, said he was grateful for the Arizona legislature's willingness to help support racing at Turf Paradise but frustrated by Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs' lack of interest in keeping the thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions of economic impact the industry has in the state.
Lucas had sought historical Horse Racing legislation, similar to what helped Revolutionary Racing reopen Colonial Downs in Virginia and has had a significant impact on the growth of Kentucky racing in recent years.
According to the memo, there are other candidates interested in purchasing the property and the unnamed potential buyers could be interested in continuing live racing at the property. Vince Francia, general manager of Turf Paradise, could not provide insight on timelines for deals with other purchasers and could only say that discussions continue between Simms and potential buyers.

Golden Gate and northern Cali as of today...

The track’s parent company, 1/ST Racing, announced on Saturday that it will request racing days for a winter-spring meeting from late December to early June, a change from a previous plan to close Golden Gate Fields in December. The winter-spring meeting at Golden Gate Fields will likely be the track’s final season.
The subject of 2024 racing dates in Northern California is scheduled to be discussed by the California Horse Racing Board at its monthly meeting on Thursday.
Regardless of when Golden Gate Fields closes, Steiner said he has firm plans to move south, but has not selected a time frame.

Anticipation as to how much the first foal for Winx will deliver. Winx, who won 33 straight races in what is considered the all-time world record, won 25 Group I races in Australia. The foal could be sold for a yearling record of $5 million U.S. when on auction in April.

Winx finished 43 37-3-0. She won just four of her first 10 races before a 33-win streak to end her career.

So, Turf Paradise closing leaves only Arizona Downs in the state?

Parx will also have a mandatory payout on Saturday pending no takedown prior. Right now, the pot is over $250,000.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Handle: $2 million+
  • Pick 5: The jackpot will start at $264,000+.
Churchill (Kentucky):
  • Tyler Gaffalione won three times and now has a sizeable lead with 11 victories this meet, six more than his closest challenger. He appears on his way to yet another Kentucky riding title. The meet elds October 1.
Horseshoe Indianapolis (Indiana):
  • Rachel McLaughlin: Good job handicapping winners today. Seven of 10 were victories as were her double pick-of-the-day and the best-bet-of-the-day. Not much for value with four of the winners chalk but even chalk can lose.

Assiniboia Downs (Manitoba):

There were so many winners at Assiniboia last night that each successful wager of the nearly million dollar $.50 Pick 5 received roughly $41. Huge pot for the season finale.

Woodbine (Ontario):

Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Eight of Nine: Three jocks combined to win eight of the nine races. The exception was the opener.
    • Kendrick Carmouche had a profitable day going 5 3-1-1.
    • Irad Ortiz, Jr. had a 3-win day.
    • Flavien Prat rode two winners.
Harrah's Harness (Pennsylvania):
  • Race 2: A 101-to-1 shot paid $204 in victory.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 3: Floored (Rafael Bejarano/Victoria Oliver) was put up to victory at 32-to-1 in a $120,000 MSW (which may be Churchill's high, certainly near the top) following a DQ to Candy Landy (Martin Garcia/Rusty Arnold) in a race that cause Brian Hernandez. Jr. to be dismounted. Floored, a $350,000 purchase, was out for the second time.
Delaware County Fair -- Little Brown Jug (Ohio):
  • Race 24: The completed card for the meet featured the $850,000 Little Brown Jug. It's My Show (Scott Zeron/Linda Toscano) won what is considered the second largest harness purse in the world. Zeron, in his 30s, also won the world's largest harness purse earlier this when he was victorious in the Hambletonian in Meadowlands (NJ). The Canadian-born Zeron won this race in 2012. Brooklyn, NY-native Toscano, who is in her 60s, is a member of the U.S. Harness Hall of Fame. The race began in 1946.

Hawthorne (IL) received its 2024 racing dates for T-breds and also the latest update on its racino...

The Illinois Racing Board has approved a 2024 schedule based on expectations that construction of a casino at Hawthorne Race Course finally will be underway during the racing season.
Hawthorne asked, and was granted at the Sept. 21 IRB meeting, racing dates on Thursday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays to prevent disruptions of racing by planned construction activities. The Saturday dates, however, put Hawthorne in direct competition with downstate FanDuel Sportsbook and Horse Racing, the former Fairmount Park, throughout the season.
=====================
The Hawthorne Thoroughbred season is set to open April 6 and run through Oct. 13 with 78 live racing dates. The track will host harness racing from Jan. 1 through Jan. 29 and again from Oct. 19 through the end of the year, switching racing surfaces between the meetings.
Fairmount's live meet starts April 16 and runs through Nov. 12 with 62 dates.

Golden Gate Fields and northern California seem to be on the following schedule for 2024....

GGF runs until June 9, maybe the 11th, before the property is shut to racing interests. The northern Cal fair meets then take control with additional racing dates for Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa and the Humboldt County Fair in Ferndale among other venues. The Fresno County Fair runs through October 15. After that, the schedule is subject to future meets in which the fairs hope to run 12 months a year.

EDIT: Now with some dates:
  • Pleasanton with the Alameda County Fair (June 12-July 9),
  • State Fair at Cal Expo (July 10-July 30),
  • Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa (July 31-Aug. 20),
  • Humboldt County Fair in Ferndale (Aug. 21-Sept. 10),
  • Three weeks of non-allocated dates,
  • Big Fresno Fair (Oct. 2-Oct. 15).

  • Brad Cox has hit the board with 13 of his past 16 starters. He is 16 7-3-3.
  • Jamie Ness almost always has strong numbers. He has won eight times with the past 18 horses sent out.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Linda Rice trained three winners. Her five wins leads the early stages of the meet.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Handle: $3 million+.
  • Jeiron Barbosa: I will say it for the 1,000th time, he should have won bug of the year last year. He had a 3-win day today.

  • Race 9: Post Time (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) won for the fourth time in four tries. I had/have high hopes for this horse and while I am not sure of future plans, Russell may have something bigger in mind. Eric Camacho was a perfect 3-for-3 on board last year, he had just two mounts from 2017-2021.

  • Replay Show:

Churchill (Kentucky):
  • Tyler Gaffalione rode three more winners. He hit the board with five of six mounts. He has the third most wins among all North America riders in 2023 and may receive some filler votes for Jockey of the Year.
Remington (Oklahoma):
  • Stewart Elliott had a 5-win day. He won for five different trainers
