Keeneland sales opened today September 11, 2023 with over $56 million spent.

An Into Mischief filly topped the sales so far at $2.3 million to Shadwell Racing (Sheikha Hissa now heading since the passing of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, United Arab Emirates).

An Uncle Mo colt sold for $2 million to Donato Lanni an agent for Zedan Racing which likely means Bob Baffert will train.

Two Into Mischief colts were the third and fourth highest purchased price following the two $2 million horses.

The first Saturday card for Churchill Downs' fall meet has been released.

The first 2024 Kentucky Derby prep race is the Iroquois (race 9).

If the "little guy" is the choice, then the $11,000 #2 is the obvious choice.

How about a Civil War trifecta even if taking liberties? Union Roll, Seize the Grey and Gettysburg Address. Add Patriot Spirit for the super.

David Grening indicated Aqueduct will host NYRA racing for 29 of the next 33 months. The exceptions are the two upcoming Saratoga summer meets and also a separate Saratoga meet to host the Belmont Stakes in both 2024 and 2025. Everything is pending approvals. But a continual Saratoga meet from June into Labor Day seems unlikely, more so the Spa hosts the third leg of the Triple Crown and then Aqueduct finishes June racing into early July both years.

Fort Erie (Ontario):
  • Handle: $3.3 million.
  • Race 10: Velocitor (Justin Stein/Kevin Attard) won the $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes at odds of 7-to-1. This is the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. Paramount Prince, who won the King's Plate which is the opener of the Crown series, finished third. The finale of the three races is the Breeders' Stakes on October 1 at Woodbine.

September 12: Day 2 of the Keeneland September Yearling Sales
  • A chart-topper when $3 million was spent to purchase an Into Mischief colt. Eleven -- nine colts -- of the 23 horses sold for $1,000,000 or more have been sired by Into Mischief.

  • A $1,000,000 seller to Songbird, sired by Curlin, hit the books. Songbird, a champion on the track, has yet to produce a winner with just one baby that has hit the track (four starts).
  • The Keeneland September Yearling Sale takes place September 11- 23.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Canceled: Following the opener, the track announced cancellation of the balance of its card; however, no immediate reason was issued though track conditions possibly played a role.
Kentucky Downs (Kentucky):
  • Seven Up: The annual 7-day meet concluded.
  • Leading Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione, Mr. Kentucky when it comes to jockeying and a day after his birthday, won another riders' title in the Commonwealth. He finished with three winners today.
  • Leading Trainer Brendan Walsh won the trainers' crown. Michael Maker was second with five wins but his 9% mark was disappointing.
  • John Velazquez won today but finished 1-for-27 at the meet. He has won just twice with his past 59 mounts at this track.
  • Race 1: The $.50 tri paid over $3,300. The $.,10 super returned more than $4,500.
  • Race 2: First World War (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh), a $285,000 purchase, was sent off 7-to-1 but looked nice in a debut maiden victory.

  • Race 5: Show Off (Gerardo Corrales/Brad Cox) was dominant in a debut maiden win at 16-to-1.
  • Race 8: Vote No (Gerardo Corrales/Willaim Morey) won the $500,000 Juvenile Sprint Stakes at 12-to-1.
  • Race 9: Crown Imperial (Ricardo Santana, Jr./John Ortiz) won the $500,000 Untapable Stakes.

In Aqueduct's 3rd race otherwise limited to Bill Mott, Chad Brown and Todd Pletcher, Shug McGaughey debuts a $1.2 million War Front filly named African Waters. Race 3 should be a beauty.

Bombs in NY. Dear Lord, this is astronomical. 96/1 over 53/1.

Stunned onlookers.

$110 in the middle? That could be a NYRA record.

$2 tri paid $101,000.

  • Light Day: Not many majors racing though exceptions were Woodbine, Gulfstream, Churchill, Pimlico, Aqueduct, Los Alamitos and Golden Gate.
  • Steve Asmussen snapped his losing skid though he has just one win with the past 41 horses sent out.
Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 9: Enormous numbers in the finale. Giramonte (Joey Martinez/Leah Gyarmati), who entered 1-for-22 lifetime and a 30-to-1 m/l, stunned onlookers with a gate-to-wire win at 96-to-1 in a field of 12. P Money (Luis Rivera, Jr./Bobby Klesaris) placed at 53-to-1. The winner paid $194.50/$116,00/$60. The $2 exacta paid over $5,500. The $.50 tri returned more than $25,000. The $.10 super paid over $52,000. The Pick 6 paid to those who hit five legs. I don't recall place payouts being higher as echoed by David Grening below. Win bets? Yes! Place bets? No!

  • Luis Rivera, Jr., third generation rider, won in a rare trip to NYRA -- he has ridden at Parx, Laurel and Monmouth among other stops -- but also placed at 53-to-1 and also 9-to-1 with the win at 5-to-2 all during the final half of the card. He should get attention for bug of the year in North America.

Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Jairo Rendon leads the meet with nine wins. He is 31 9-4-4. He was my pick for Apprentice of the Year in North America last year but as stated after the results and to this day, his distant third place finish was disagreeable.
  • Forest Boyce and newcomer Martina Rojas are having good, perhaps under-the-radar, meets. Axel Concepcion, perhaps a leading contender for Apprentice of the Year, is having a solid meet.
  • Laurel re-opens September 29 for the rest of the year and likely into May 2024.
Red Mile Harness (Kentucky):
  • Card: $3.4 million in purses. Every race was $400,000 except the opener and finale at $100,000.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Favorites: Just two favorites won on the 10-race card.
  • Race 10: The payouts were highlighted by a $.50 Pick 5 that returned over $136,000. The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $14,000.
  • Tyler Gaffalione won five straight races beginning with Race 2, one via a DQ, en route to a 5-win day on board nine mounts. He is the King of Kentucky.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 8: Ready To Venture (Rafael Hernandez/Michael Stidham) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Seaway Stakes.
  • Sahin Civaci-Mark Casse teamed for three winners.
