Came across this race with John Henry winning the turf classic

Any idea why the letters are referenced even though there’s no coupled entries and no letters on saddle towels?

It had to do with the evolution of OTB betting in NY. Scratches weren't always offered as quickly as today and as such, so not to cause confusion, letters were added in case numbers shown and those in programs didn't match.

@GKJ

There is an article on that matter....

When the New York City Offtrack Betting Corporation opened its shops for business in 1971, it had to assign horses letters instead of trackside numbers.
Early scratches at the tracks led to the switching of horse numbers. Changing numbers were not recorded before OTB parlors opened, so that the potential for bettors not knowing what number went with what horse was high.
So OTB used its own designations, assigning letters to the horses. Now, the New York Racing Association records its early scratches in time for the off-track parlors to use the reassigned numbers.

So if the 1 scratches late, they move all the letters up one? You get 2A, 3B, 4C, etc?

Weird that this is the first time I’ve come across this.

That seems about right. IIRC, in some jurisdictions overseas, horses are listed alphabetically in programs and the program numbers and post positions vary greatly. I am pretty sure England lists horses by weight, or once did.

Wheeling (West Virginia):
  • Race 20: The $2 Pick 5 paid over $113,000. Wheeling is one of two active greyhound tracks remaining in the USA.
Thursday, July 13, 2023

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Over $20,000,000.
  • Chalk vs. Prices: Favorites won the first two races but then lost six of the remaining eight races.
  • Race 2: Sugar Hi (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) was sent off the favorite in the first MSW race of the meet, a gigantic $136,500 purse, and looked impressive in winning by six lengths. Mott's generally not been a specialist with first-timers but that seems to have changed as his 9% lifetime mark is dwarfed by a 23% strike rate in 2023.

  • Races 9-10: As stated here and elsewhere often, one of my favorite betting strategies to lay-it-in with lone first-time starters when they offer value. There were two opportunities in NY today, and coincidentally in the final races in which the double (didn't play,) paid $203 for every $1 bet.
  • Race 9: Becky's Joker (Javier Castellano/Gary Contessa) won the $175,000 Grade 3 Schuylerville in shocking fashion as the second highest odds on the board at 21-to-1. The lone first-time starter in the race won convincingly. Maiden winners in graded stakes are uncommon enough but Contessa, when retired from training in 2020 after 35 years in the business only to return, had this Practical Joke 2-year-old filly geared. The horse did not meet a sale (Reserve Not Attained) last year.
“Effin awesome,” Contessa said after the race. “This is the way to come back. I’m back. I tried the real world, but this side of the fence is the happier place for me.”
1689292884078.png

  • Race 10: Thundara (Irad Ortiz, Jr./ Phil Antonacci) debuted to an 8-to-1 win as the race's only first-time starter. Antonacci, who graduated University of Pennsylvania in 2017, won for the 12th time in his young career. His family is involved in standardbreds. He is based in south Florida.
1689291773068.png
  • Repeat Winners: Javier Castellano (7-to-1 and 21-to-1), Flavien Prat and Irad Ortiz, Jr., all three who could be in the Hall of Fame together some day, won twice apiece.
  • Ten Races, Ten Trainers Won: No trainer won more than once.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Jaime Rodriguez-Jamie Ness are a formidable duo. The pairing went 2-for-2 today and is 5 4-1-0 the past two days.
Colonial Downs (Virginia):
  • Opening Day: An all-turf card.

  • Jaime Rodriguez-Jamie Ness are 6-1-0 as a team with their past seven runners.
  • Jamie Ness and Michael Trombetta both had 3-win days combined at multiple tracks.
Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: NYRA announced today that the Belmont Park spring/summer meet handled $14,746,421 daily, a 9.7 percent increase over 2022. That included a handle of $118,283,455 for the Belmont Stakes which is an all-time high for a non-Triple Crown year. The 38-day meet totaled $560,363,986 which is lesser than last year's sum with 44 race days. Whether ongoing construction prevents Belmont from running in 2024 is undetermined but there are already whispers of the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga.
  • Race 6: Eight of the 11 horses were scratched.
  • Race 10: 11 of the 16 horses were scratched.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Off The Turf: New York had transmission problems early in the day and the eventual off-the-turf announcement followed with a significant amount of scratches that affected the card in its entirety.
  • Rinse Repeat: Irad Ortiz, Jr. (4), brother Jose Ortiz (3) and Javier Castellano (3) have combined to win half the races through two days.
  • Through Two Days: 18 trainers have won the 20 races. Linda Rice and Chad Brown are the only multiple winners.
Laurel Park (Maryland):
  • Jaime Rodriguez-Jamie Ness combined twice and both horses returned as winners.
  • Sheldon Russell was off his mounts today and there was a noticeable difference in replacement riders. He was supposed to ride seven times including five mounts for his wife. Russell is scheduled to ride in Delaware tomorrow. Perhaps that is the reason for his absence today.
  • Race 5: Buckin' Great (Xavier Perez/John Robb) broke his maiden in his fourth race and defeated stablemate Buckin' Lucky (Jaime Rodriguez/John Robb) in the third matchup, all at Laurel, for the pair. Robb and/or the ownership outfit based in Cheverly, MD have a sense of humor. Buckin' Awesome.

Perry Ouzts won a race on his 69th birthday earlier this month and now this...

A fascinating story about resiliency and perseverance for 61-year-old rider Cindy Murphy.

Longtime jockey Cindy Murphy was just seven wins away from her milestone 2,000th victory last June at Prairie Meadows, but a pre-race incident left her with injuries severe enough that that goal could easily have been ripped from her grasp forever.
Riding the 2-year-old filly Crypto Mo, trained by her husband Travis, Murphy was approaching the starting gates when the first-time starter spooked and reared straight into the air. Then 60 years old, Murphy recalls bailing out off the filly's side, but Crypto Mo lost her balance and landed on top of her rider.
“I can remember laying on the ground, and I knew I was injured, but I was telling the guys to go get another rider because I knew how nice this filly was,” Murphy said. “She wasn't hurt or anything, but it was a long enough delay to get me loaded up into the ambulance.”
Murphy was transported to the hospital and diagnosed with eight broken ribs, four pelvic fractures, and a tear in her abdominal wall. Her pelvis was misaligned, though doctors didn't catch that until several weeks later, and Murphy opted to continue her healing without any surgery.
It was 13 months later when Murphy triumphantly piloted that same Crypto Mo to victory in the Grade 3 Iowa Oaks, making that 2,000-win milestone a reality and earning her first graded stakes win in the process.
“It's a goal I've been trying to reach for a long time,” said Murphy. “You know, it's been one setback after another, but I finally reached it!”
Now 61 years young with her longtime goal achieved, Murphy can feel retirement beckoning.

Running notes for Saratoga on Saturday...

  • On the turf for Saratoga today (Saturday).
  • Race 3 at Saratoga should be fun. My kinda race. $136k MSW on turf.
  • Just as anticipated. Photo finish in Race 3. Three-year-old fillies.
  • Holy moly. 23-1 tops a 45-1 in that race. Well I didn't anticipate that!
  • Damn. $6000 for $.10 super. $5000 for a $.50 tri. $826 for a $1 exacta.
  • That was a helluva Diana. Head bob at the wire as In Italian falls to Whitebeam. Flavien Prat for Chad Brown who had four of the five entered.
  • Philly is in the house or more so the Spa. Parx connections win the Grade 3 Sanford for 2-year-old boys and its $175,000 purse. ......at 46-to-1.
  • Yo Yo Candy! Rocky Is smiling...yo yos.
  • Unofficially, Saratoga handled $31 million.
  • The Pick 6 just paid out.... $344,000 roughly.

  • Mage, the Ky. Derby winner is likely to race next week in Monmouth's Haskell (NJ) or train up to the Travers in Saratoga (NY) next month. New Jersey's signature race could use the attention.
  • Brittany Russell didn't have a good Friday but today she had three winners with eight starters spread across four tracks.
  • Jaime Rodriguez-Jamie Ness placed in their only teaming today. They are 8 6-2-0 since July 8 when connected.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Just shy of $32,000,000.
  • Race 1: Pirate (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher), a $350,000 Omaha beach colt, was sent off 1-to-5 and didn't disappoint. In thwe words of the DRF's David Grening "touted from Maine to Spain."

  • Race 3: Epic Miss Justice (Joel Rosario/Kelly Breen) nosed out 45-to-1 debut runner Why Waste Words (Manny Franco/James Bond) to formulate a $1 exacta worth $826.50 in a $136,500 MSW. Exotics returned: $6000 for $.10 super and $5000 for a $.50 tri.

  • Race 4: Whitebeam (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) had the upset of the day defeating Eclipse Award winner In Italian (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) in the Grade I $500,000 Diana Stakes. The winner paid $17.60 in a field in which Brown had four of the five entered.

  • Race 9: Casa Creed (Luis Saez/Bill Mott) won the Grade 3 $175,000 Kelso Stakes. Casa Creed, at the age of seven, has won more than $2.1 million with his eight win in 32 starts.

  • Race 10: Yo Yo Candy (Angel Castillo/Danny Velasquez) pulled one of the day's biggest stunners in winning the $175,000 Grade 3 Sanford Stakes at enormous odds of 46-to-1. The 2-year-old was foaled in California and purchased at auction for the measly sum of $35,000 earlier this year. Castillo enjoyed his first graded stakes win. Velazquez enjoyed his second career graded stakes win. Not exactly what is expected at a graded stakes at Saratoga. The connections, based in Philadelphia, debuted the horse to victory at Parx in May.

  • Leading Jockeys: The Ortiz brothers have five wins apiece through three race days. Flavien Prat, with two winners today, is third best with four victories.
  • Jose Ortiz was 2 2-0-0 for Linda Rice amid a day in which he was 9 2-1-0 (0-for-7 for other trainers). They are a combined 6 4-0-0 at the meet.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 8: Hybrid Eclipse (Joe Rocco, Jr./Brittany Russell) was one of the most impressive winners of the day in winning the $100,000 Caeser's Wish Stakes. She also won this race last year but basically wired the field. What a finish, truly one of the mot magical stretch rides of the calendar year. When you watch the 6 and have no hope but then....

That call by Dave Rodman on Hybrid Eclipse's run:
"Hybrid Eclipse is 13 lengths in back.... But it's getting very, very late in the game.. Hybrid Eclipse...from the far, far outside. Can she do it?! She was dead last. She dropped back to last. Looked beaten...Here she comes and again she does it."

Meadowlands (NJ):
  • Handle: More than $5.6 million was bet into the harness card which was a highest total for the track since the comparable night in 2006. Meadowlands has been establishing tremendous handles for much of 2023. Perhaps the biggest indicator of success is the $5.6 million wagered was the largest at any track in the US except Saratoga's T-breds. A fantastic output.

Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Race 3: Cupids Crush (Eduardo Gallardo/Nathaniel Quinonez) won the $50,000 Frances Genter by more than 11 lengths. Mrs. G. lives forever as the owner of 1990 Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled and the remarkable scene with trainer Carl Nafzger who called the race in her ear due to her failing eyesight.
1689472818318.png
Sacramento (California):
  • Canceled: All weekend, the Cal Expo has been canceled due to expected heat. This is the current fair track during the season with Cali fairs take center stage.
  • No Racing in the State: With Del Mar's meet approaching, this was a rare Saturday with no major racing in southern Cal.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Off Turf: Racing was run exclusively on Tapeta.
  • Rafael Hernandez rode three winners on eight mounts
  • Kazushi Kimura remained sidelined due to concussion protocol.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Roughly $17 million. Racing was off-the-turf.
  • Race 9: Uncashed (Irad Oritz,Jr./Larry Rivelli) won the $175,000 Quick call stakes. Score one for the smaller tracks and the Uncaptured gelding foaled in Florida has five wins in six starts with victories at Louisiana Downs (LA), Prairie Meadows (IA) and Hawthorne (IL). This is the 3-year-old's fourth straight win. Rivelli is striking at a brilliant 35% in 2023 but rarely visits New York.

  • Jose Ortiz-Linda Rice won again at Saratoga. They simmered from a torrid starter but have maintained an impressive 11 5-3-1 mark at the meet.
  • Jose Ortiz and brother Irad Ortiz, Jr. are tied atop the standings through opening weekend with seven wins apiece.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Jamie Rodriguez-Jamie Ness show continued with three wins on four tries. That makes them 12 8-2-1 since July 8.
  • Race 1: Sing Scat (Jaime Rodriguez/Jamie Ness) gave the trainer his 4,000th lifetime win.
  • Btittany Russell (38%, 18 wins) and Jamie Ness (43% 17 wins) are having stellar meets.

Funny Cide's passing at the age of 23 deserves a look back at a wonderful career. He will forever be known as the first New York foal to win a Kentucky Derby when he accomplished the feat in 2003. He ended his career 38 11-6-8 and due to his gelding status was unable to reproduce which was a main reason why his racing career continued through his seventh year. He earned more than $3.5 million. Following his Derby win, he was the victor in the Preakness but failed to bring home the Triple Crown after a third-place finish in the Belmont Stakes in front of his home crowd. Ridden by Jose Santos, trained by Barclay Tagg and owned by NY locals Sackatoga Stables. He ended his career with a July 4 victory at Finger Lakes in his home state.

Another track shutting its doors and this time a Stronach property. No word yet on what will become of the property.

Hopefully this isn't Laurel's future.

In a move that likely will bring an end to a storied racing history in Northern California, The Stronach Group announced July 16 that it will close Golden Gate Fields at the end of the 2023 race meet.
In making the announcement officials with the Stronach Group said they hope the move invigorates racing in Southern California, where The Stronach Group owns Santa Anita Park and the San Luis Rey Downs training center.

Wayne Lukas, at the ripe age of 87, will train Cowboy Code, a $1,000,000 Into Mischief colt in Friday's opener at Saratoga. The owners, one from Texas and the other from California, are late bloomers into horse ownership.

A couple of fillies running in that race, too., and both are trained by 2-year-old specialist Wesley Ward.

That is a positive memory. I thought that would be the year of Empire Maker being a son to Unbridled (my favorite of all-time) and winning both the FL Derby and the Wood. He was runner-up to Funny Cide in that Derby and then the order of finish was reversed in the Belmont when they met again,.

Has he not been healthy? That’s something i don’t like about that race. It feels like too many horses come out of there and are either never seen again or are never the same again.

Has he not been healthy? That’s something i don’t like about that race. It feels like too many horses come out of there and are either never seen again or are never the same again.
Do you mean Arcangelo? The horse came out of the race tired but not sore. The trainer headed south to Florida while the horse stayed in New York and trained lightly at Saratoga with the goal being a race there in late July or August. Antonucci hasn't won since the Belmont with about a dozen or so horses sent out.

  • Jamie Ness had a 3-win day. He is 51 22-9-7 since July 9.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Roughly $14 million. A gorgeous day at the Spa.
  • Race 6: Queen's Martini (Luis Saez/Danny Gargan) debuted toa 5+-length win. I am not sure if Gargan has a sleeper, a daughter to Mucho Macho Man, to my memory not much of a sire, with scant exceptions, though a Grade I winner and at $19,000 a cheap purchase, but maybe the filly will develop. She was cold on the board at 6-to-1.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Pick 5 Carryover: Roughly $350,000 in the pool to start the next race day.
Maryland Jockey Club (Maryland):
  • Meets: Schedules were released for all three tracks for the remainder of 2023. As follows:
  • Timonium (state fair): August 25, 26, 27, Sep. 1, 2, 3 (6 days). And Timonium displays the old-school graphics on the simulcast feed.

  • Pimlico: September 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24 (9 days).
  • Laurel: September 29 through December 31.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):

Meadowlands (NJ):
  • Handle: More than $5.6 million was bet into the card Saturday night which was a highest total for the track since the comparable night in 2006. Meadowlands has been establishing tremendous handles for much of 2023. Perhaps the biggest indicator of success is the $5.6 million wagered was the largest at any track in the US except Saratoga's T-breds. A fantastic output.
