  • Paco Lopez rode two winners at Monmouth. While he was off from riding yesterday, he had a 6-win day at Parx Wednesday. Thus, his past two racing days, he has a 12 8-1-3 (67%/100%) record.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 1: Forest Survivor (Isaac Castillo/Wayne Potts) gave the trainer his first win of the year with his first starter since April 2022. His barn came under scrutiny at some point last year, NYRA being one jurisdiction.
Pleasanton (California):
  • Race 3: Daddy'sdarlingboy (Matilda Burnham/Steve Sherman) her first lifetime win in her 18th try. She smiled broadly across the finish line to the weigh-in. Good stuff.

Royal Ascot (England):
  • Day Four: The 5-day meet concludes Saturday,
  • Frankie Dettori added two wins to his incredible career and now has 81 victories lifetime at Royal Ascot. The total is second best behind Lester Piggott's 116.
1687562198635.png
  • Race 2: Shaquille (Oisin Murphy/Julie Camacho) won the Group I Commonwealth Cup Stakes worth $720,000.

  • Race 4: Tahiyra (Chris Hayes/Dermot Weld) won the Group I race Coronation Stakes worth $720,000.

  • Winning Foals by Nation (through four days): Ireland 13, England 10, USA 3, France 2

Jareth Loveberry will not ride Two Phil's, the likely favorite in today's Ohio Derby, due to injury. Gerardo Corrales picks up the mount.

Two Phils finished second in the Kentucky Derby.

Brittany Russell win at Delaware and Laurel mere minutes apart with Mike Repole and Michael Dubb, respectively, the winning owners. She is good. Hubby Sheldon is 47% at the Laurel meet.

  • Brittany Russell is 18 9-3-1 since June 17.
Royal Ascot (England):
  • Final Day: The meet, which began Tuesday, ended today.
  • Handle: More than $191 million bet internationally including $41 million+ on this card, the latter which is the third highest in the tote company's history. More than $8 million was bet into the QE II Jubilee which is the largest bet into a single race in the Tote's history.
  • Frankie Dettori rode his final Royal Ascot race and ended this part of his career with 81 wins.
1687657993529.png
1687658015230.png
  • Race 7: Dawn Rising (Ryan Moore/Joseph O'Brien) won the final race of the meet.
  • Race 6: Burdett Road (Neil Callan/Michael Bell) won and paid $42.50.
  • Race 5: Saint Larence (Hiollie Doyle/Archie Watson) won and paid $34.40.
  • Race 4: Pyledriver (P.J. McDonald/William Muir and Chris Grassick) won the Group 2. A stewards' inquiry was called but nullified.
  • Race 3: Khaadem (Jamie Spencer/Charlie Hills) rocked the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, the lone Group I race of the day, and paid $148.90 which was the largest in this race's 68-year history. The $1 exacta paid $985. The $1 tri paid over $8,600. Spencer won with two bombs this meet. He last won a Group I in 2011.

1687657664133.png
  • Race 2: Age of Kings (Wayne Lordan/Aidan O'Brien) won the Group 3 and paid $69.40. The 41 tri paid a remarkable $14,000+.
  • Race 1: Snellen (G.F. Carroll/Gavin Cromwell) won the opener of the day.
Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: Exceeded $13 million.
  • Jose Ortiz rode a natural hat trick in the last three races.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Prices: Filled with some interesting payouts.
  • Race 1: Our Fortune Cookie (Gabriel Maldonando/Samantha Dobles) gave the young trainer her third lifetime win. She is sister to Elizabeth. The winner was sent off at 26-to-1 but thereafter the prices were amongst the lowest I remember.
  • Race 3: The $.10 super paid $1.34.
  • Race 4: The $.50 Pick 3 paid $1.85
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 3 paid $1.95. The $.50 Pick 4 paid $2.80.
  • Race 8: Lightning Tones (Marcos Meneses/Danny Hurtak) won at 28-to-1, the longest shot on the board. The prior six races were filled with tiny payouts.
Horseshoe Indianapolis (Indiana):
  • Race 4: The $2 exacta paid $1,750.60 with 21-1 and 36-1 finishers. The runner up paid a remarkable $58.80.

Ellis (Kentucky):
  • Society (Tyler Gaffalione/Steve Asmussen) obliterates the field and wins the $225,000 Grade 3 Chicago Stakes. The margin of victory was 10 3/4 lengths with a final time of 1:20.54 (prior mark was 1:20.69 for seven furlongs).

Thistledown (Ohio):
  • Gerardo Corrales had three mounts and each won for Larry Rivelli. Those three winners were Rivelli's lone starters of the day and each came as a replacement for Jareth Loveberry who was injured earlier this week.
  • Race 12: Two Phils (Gerardo Corrales/Larry Rivelli) won the Grade 3 $500,000 Ohio Derby.

Lone Star (Texas):
  • Card: Four races $100,000+ under the Summer Turf Festival banner.

  • Race 10: King Cause (Rene Diaz/Michael Maker) won the $300,000 Texas Turf Classic. The 8-year-old won for the 9th time in 38 starts. King Cause won the Knickerbocker at Belmont last year.

Multiple scratches in the feature at Monmouth. The reduced field has Chad Brown vs. Brittany Russell among others.

The $1 super in Laurel 3 paid over $145,000. Yup.

Brittany Russell lost to Chad Brown at Monmouth.

She just finished 1-2 at Laurel 6. The $550,000 Into Mischief colt named Dillinger broke his maiden after being transferred from Bob Baffert's barn. Brittany!

Equinox won the U.S. equal of a $3.6 million Grade I turf today in Japan.

  • Larry Rivelli sent out six starters the past two days. He finished with five winners and a third place spot.
  • Chad Brown had an impressive day with three winners among the four starters he sent out including 2-for-2 at Monmouth. He finished 4 3-1-0.
  • Klaravich Stables was a perfect 3 3-0-0 through Chad Brown today. The outfit, led by Seth Klarman, is among the top and most astute ownerships in the nation.
Hanshin Racecourse (Japan):
  • Race 11: Equinox (Christophe Lemaire/Tetsuya Kimura) won the Grade I $3.6 million Takarazuka Kinen and with it received an automatic invitation to the Breeders' Cup. Equinox is considered by many observers to be the top race horse in the world.

Belmont (New York):
  • Dylan Davis opened the card with a natural hat trick and ended the day with four wins on seven rides. He won for four trainers.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Chad Brown is 33 12-1-6 (36%) at the meet.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Jaime Rodriguez won four times each for a different trainer. He is now atop the riders' standings at the meet.
  • Race 3: The $1 super returned more than $145,000 but only $49,000+ was in the pool. The top four were sent off at 11-1-, 6-1, 63-1 and 31-1.
  • Race 6: Brittany Russell-trained horses finished 1-2 with Dillinger, a $550,000 prospect once in Bob Baffert's barn, breaking his maiden.

  • Race 9: No One to Blame (Johan Rosado/Michael Trombetta) was off since September 2021 yet won by nearly two lengths. The top two finishers were sent off 15-1 and 62-1. The second-place finisher paid $50.40.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Steve Asmussen had a 3-win day at the track as part of a 4-win day across America.
  • Florent Geroux rode three winners.
  • Tyler Gaffalione leads the meet in wins and is riding with a 28%/65% mark.
Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Race 1: An old-style match race. The 3 beat the 5 by more than six lengths in the only two entered.
  • Race 5: Act a Fool (Alexis Centeno/Larry Rivelli) won the $100,000 Hawthorne Derby.

  • Race 7: Command Central (Olaf Hernandez/Antonio Meraz) wired the field at 81-to-1 -- that happens about once a century -- and apparently at least one participant in a $2,500 tourney was victorious.

Hopefully that can be repaired. Roller-coaster of emotions to say the least. Best of luck sent to the connections and the valiant horse.

================

Two Phil’s, one of the leading 3-year-olds in North America, exited his win in Saturday’s Ohio Derby at Thistledown with an ankle injury and is unlikely to race again in 2023.

Larry Rivelli, who trains Two Phil’s for Vince Foglia’s Patricia’s Hope, Phillip Sagan, and Madaket Stables said that Two Phil’s on Sunday was being transported to the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, where he’ll undergo further evaluation and is expected to be operated on by Dr. Larry Bramlage.

The Everest Stakes -- in its seventh edition -- at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia, will see a purse increase to approximately $13.35 million (U.S.). The race will be held October 14.

The $20 million Saudi Cup in Saudi Arabia is the world’s richest race.

The Dubai World Cup in the United Arab Emirates is worth $12 million.

Frankie Dettori will ride in Australia in November including the Melbourne Cup on November 7. The Breeders' Cup, in California, Nov. 3-4, was the unofficial swansong in his career.

@Marco 85

It was bound to happen...again.

Gulfstream Park is replacing sod, widening its turf track

...the track will be widened by “about 10 to 15 feet, which will give us another lane or lane and a half, which will set up nicely for the championship meet.”
Lakow said that after last year’s improvements, the course “needed more work.”
“Last year, we ran a lot, a lot of turf. We didn't have any rain. We were never off the turf. And we felt that there is still more to do. And our turf track superintendent Leif Dickinson wanted to change the materials underneath the sod to make the turf a little bit stronger and sturdier.”
Lakow said the prep work is expected to be completed by mid-July, and then the sod will be installed. The timetable is “dependent upon the weather,” he noted. “We had some rain, but we're working around it.”
The course will be ready for racing by the time Gulfstream’s winter meet opens in December, he said.

Surprised he’s not ending it in Europe, but I guess their calendar ends too soon

The Delaware Oaks is a solid race with some heavy hitters shipping including Chad Brown, Todd Pletcher and a pair from Brittany Russell. More later, but a Grade 3 worth $300,000 shouldn't get overlooked despite the exceptional offerings at places like Ellis on Saturday.

UPDATE: The card has been released...

He initially said the Breeders' Cup would be the farewell race but that plans were tentative. The Melbourne Cup is one of the few holes in his resume so maybe he wants one last shot since that is such an enormous event even without his decision. IIRC, that race is around 11 pm ET.

He must think he has a good horse for that race, or will get one. I’d rather go out on one of those races for sure.

Interestingly, he is suspended multiple times regarding rides (plural) at Royal Ascot. If I read things correctly, he is suspended universally from July 4-21 pending appeals.

Wesley Ward suspended 15 days for a positive test from July15 at Monmouth, nearly a year ago. The suspension will run from June 23, 2023 into July 7, 2023. The New Jersey Racing Commission issued the suspension which will be reciprocal, the dates pending any appeal.

More news from New Jersey. Through Monmouth, Parx (PA) will now be offered to in-state residents and whoever qualifies for fixed odds wagering.

At last check, New Jersey is the only state that permits fixed odds and besides Monmouth (NJ) and now Parx (PA), the state/track allow fixed odds betting on:
  • Delaware Park (DE)
  • FanDuel (IL)
  • Emerald Downs (WA)
  • Canterbury Park (MN)
  • Century Mile (AB)
  • Monterrico and Hipodromo (Chile)
  • Caymanas Park (Jamaica)
