Fort Erie (Ontario):
  • Handle: The Father's Day card handled $1.7 million which was 189% better than last year.
Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: More than $11 million.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. added two wins early and at one point had won seven of 11 races beginning yesterday.
  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 6 paid over $63,000 after a 32-to-1 shot won the finale.
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Race Day: This is the only Sunday the track will race during the extensive 2023 meet. Happy Father's Day! Parx is one of a few tracks that operates12 months a year.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 8: Bosserati (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) was sent off near 5-to-1 odds yet won the $100,000 Stormy Blues Stakes in a gate-to-wire triumph. An objection was lodged but quickly nullified. The winning filly switched from dirt and is a perfect 3-for-3 on turf with three straight wins. The winning rider held the couple's child while conducting a post-race interview on Fathers' Day. The couple has won four of their six rides when teamed the past three days.

Ellis (Kentucky):
  • Race 7: Necker Island (Mitchell Murrill/Chris Hartman) won the $225,000 Mighty Beau Stakes in a reduced field of three (off the turf) yet as the longest shot on the board at under 2-to-1.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Meet: Closing day. Juan Hernandez (jockey) and Phil D'Amato (trainer) won their respective categories.
  • Handle and Pick 6: $17.1 million was handled including more than $3.7 million added into the Pick 6 in which multiple winners collected over $11,000 each.
  • Race 2: Muth (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) was purchased by Amr Zedan at auction for $2 million and looked every bit as advertised in winning his maiden race by more than 8 lengths.

  • Race 8: Sir Atticus (Mike Smith/John Shirreffs) won the MSW in a race that Bob Baffert sent out three starters.

What is the Royal Ascot?

The Royal Ascot is an annual horse racing meet held at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire, England. It holds eight of the United Kingdom’s 32 yearly Group 1 races over the course of four days, with 35 races run at the event in total. This year’s Royal Meeting will also feature four Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series races, which are as follows:

  • Queen Anne Stakes (June 20 at 9:30 a.m. EST)
  • King’s Stand Stakes (June 20 at 10:40 a.m. EST)
  • Prince of Wales’s Stakes (June 21 at 11:20 a.m. EST)
  • Norfolk Stakes (June 22 at 9:30 a.m. EST)
The Royal Ascot is historically popular for its close ties to the British Royal family. Traverse just six miles north of the course and you will find Windsor Castle, the epicenter of Royal history for over 1,000 years. The castle used to be the home of Queen Elizabeth II, and Her Majesty was an avid horseracing enthusiast and regular attendee of the Royal Ascot.

This year’s Royal Ascot will be the first under the reign of King Charles, and His Majesty will be in attendance for the entirety of the event.

How can I watch the 2023 Royal Ascot?
The 2023 Royal Ascot is a five-day affair, beginning on Tuesday, June 20 and concluding on Saturday, June 24. The entirety of the event will be streaming live on Peacock with additional coverage on NBC, NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.

Royal Ascot (England):
  • Day One: Event runs Monday through Saturday.
  • Winning Regions for Foals: Ireland (4), England (2) and France (1).
  • Race 1: Triple Time (Neil Callan/Kevin Ryan) won the Queen Anne Stakes which is a Breeders' Cup invitation. The longshot winner in the $900,000 race paid $70 to begin the event.
1687432184241.png
  • Race 3: Bradsell (Hollie Doyle/Archie Watson) won the King's Stand Stakes which is a Breeders' Cup invitation.
1687432240089.png
  • Ryan Moore won three times, twice for Aidan O'Brien the lone multiple winners. O'Brien made Royal Ascot history with his 83rd training victory.

  • Ryan Moore has 75 wins at Royal Ascot but that is far from Lestor Piggott's total of 116. Frankie Dettori has 77 wins in 35 years of racing but he was issued a 9-day suspension for a ride early on the card today.

  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. was off his mounts.

He was on board two of the most heart-wrenching Triple Crown races and for very different reasons: Barbaro's demise and Birdstone's upset of Smarty Jones.

Every single insider, while just a handful. who has mentioned Prado in my company has nothing but praise for him. Humble among other words described.

Hopefully he has a long and peaceful retirement.

I thought they cancelled the 2004 Belmont. I don't recall that race ever taking place.

  • Jonathan Thomas sent out five horses and four returned winners. He was 3-for-4 in Minnesota and won with his lone starter at Indiana.
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Paco Lopez dazzled with a 6-win performance. He finished 8 6-1-1. He did not ride in the first two races.

Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Card: Six stakes out of nine races and $400,000 in purse money.
  • Handle: Nearly $3 million.
  • Florent Geroux-Jonathan Thomas teamed three times and won each race. Geroux finished 5 3-1-1.
  • Race 8: Golden Bandit (Adam Beschizza/Coty Rosin) won the $100,000 Canterbury Derby.

Royal Ascot (England)
  • Event: Day two of five race days this week.
  • Race 1: Crimson Advocate (John Velazquez/George Weaver) won the opener. That's one for the US. Twenty-six horses raced.

  • Race 2: A $13,000+ tri topped by a $75.90 winner.
  • Race 4: Mostahdaf (Jim Crowley/John & Thady Gosden) won the $1.2 million Prince of Wales stakes which is one of four Breeders' Cup invitation races. The $26.20 winner offered the second longest set of odds.
1687432345512.png
  • Race 5: Jimi Hendrix (Rossa Ryan/Ralph Beckett) defeated 29 challengers including runner-up Sonny Liston (Ryan Moore/Ralph Beckett) in what has to be among the most memorable days in the life of the trainer whose horses went off at 23-to-1 and 32-to-1. The winner paid $48.60. It was the largest field through two days (30 horses, the #1 scratched). The losing rider in the race had his choice of either horse according to the trainer who said afterwards regarding his 1-2 performance "You couldn’t make it up, really." Ryan said "Ralph is a genius" of the trainer who won at Royal Ascot for the fourth time lifetime.

1687432945183.png
  • Race 6: Gregory (Frankie Dettori/John & Thady Gosden) gave the legendary 52-year-old rider his 78th win at Royal Ascot in what is labeled his farewell year at the event. He was issued a suspension from the first day of this event but though that will be honored universally that ban will not begin until next month.
1687432566510.png
  • Irish Foals: Five winners.
  • Winning Foals by Nation (through two days): Ireland 8, England 4, USA 1, France 1.
  • Big Paydays: I don't think there are Pick 5 bets at Ascot but let the mind wander with these winners:
  • S22.70
  • $75.90
  • $23.50
  • $26.20
  • $48.60
  • $3.70 (race 6}
  • $56.70

@GKJ

Honest to God, I made one pick today at Ascot and the horse just won at 50-1. All I said was "Jaime Spencer is due...". Guess what else. I didn't wager. D'oh.

Royal Ascot (England):
  • Day Three: Five-day meet.
  • Winning Foals by Nation (through three days): Ireland 10, England 7, USA 2, France 2.
  • Tom Marquand rode two winners.
  • Race 7: Witch Hunter (Jamie Spencer/Richard Hannon) was sent off at 49-to-1 and won the finale to pay $100. Spencer won for the first time since 2018 at Royal Ascot, his 27th lifetime win at the prestigious meet.

  • Race 4: Courage Mon Ami (Frankie Dettori/John & Thady Gosden) won the Gold Cup, the lone Group I race of the day. The victory provided the legendary 52-year-old rider his 79th win at Royal Ascot in what is likely his last time racing at the meet.

1687476614971.png
  • Race 1: Valiant Force (Rossa Ryan/Adrian Murray), foaled in the U.S. but who raced all three starts in Europe, pulled one of the largest shockers in recent years paying $240.70 in victory. This was a Breeders' Cup invitation. Exotics were gigantic:
    • $1.00 QUINELLA 7-16 $1838.60
    • $1.00 EXACTA 16-7 $5369.60
    • $1.00 TRIFECTA 16-7-4 $25166.00
