I May Be In The Minority . . . But I Believe That Kaapo Kakko Could Be Selected 1st Overall in 2019

I see the Finnish hype machine has gone into overdrive earlier than usual.

Every year there is a clear number 1, and then all of a sudden someone "closes in" on them. It's all for hype for the draft. Hughes is still the clear #1.
But that really does happen.

-Couturier was consensus #1 for over a year. Ended up 8th

-Patrick was viewed as a #1 for close to 2 years, ended up 2nd

-Eric staal for at least 6 months was a #1 lock, fell to 2

-Duncan Keith was literally passed on maybe 1 or 2 mocks the week before the draft, went #2

Off the top of my head, I'm sure there's more

Why is he playing wing now?
TPS is arguably the Leafs of Finnish Liiga in that they have 2 top centers of the league. Playing Kakko as a center in the third line instead of first line would not benefit him or the team at this point.

Yep people like to say this is about generating hype for the draft but a lot of time theres merit to it. I said earlier even now on the drafts like where Hedman challenged Tavares and Seguin challenged Hall, the second overalls might actually have ended up better as well. Like you said, Couturiers draft was supposed to be him and Larsson slugging it out for first all year and neither went first. Patrick went 2 as well and really only slid late in the year.

I dont think anyone is saying yet that Kakko or Cozens are going to be first overall. Theyre saying Hughes has some stuff going on with him that might make this draft a close one at the top. This wont be a runaway like it was last year with Dahlin

That’s what people say when they don’t have a point.

Well done.

You've made it very clear thar you have no idea who a) Kakko is and b)what Finland has done in the recent years, so it's impossible to have good talks with you, instead you just like to embarrass yourself.

Right, anyone who thinks Hughes is still the #1 prospect is clueless.

Nothing I said about Granlund was false.

You just took that to mean that I don't think Finland is capable of producing good players.

You keep going on your garbage Granlund hype and ignore everything that has happened since, all the changes that have been made and all the talent Finland has produced, year after year.
Barkov, Laine, Rantanen, Aho, Heiskanen leading the way.

Explain to me how Kakko is too weak for NHL, or too slow for NHL or stop with your Granlund garbage.

I was reading somewhere that they expected him to get closer but if all stays the same with Hughes, he should still be number 1 when it's all said and done.

I'm a bit leery of hyped Finns.

Mikael Granlund was supposed to be the Finnish Gretzky.

This is what you start with so go on, explain how it works here.
Why should we ignore the change away from fair play, the off ice, on ice, nutrition changes, the strenght and skating differences between Kakko and Granlund, why should we ignore the talents Finland has developed post Granlund.

Keep living in the past if you want.

I don't know how on earth anyone could have missed the development changes Finland has done and the results it has produced, and Laine was pretty ....ng hyped.

Strictly speaking about hype and discussion before entering the NHL (not to be mixed with pre-draft hype), I think Nyquil is quite correct. Granlund had the most hype before entering the NHL if not only for the reason that he was the first big Finnish draft pick in a long time and followed it with an awesome showing at the 2011 WC. Of course people were disappointed afterwards after Granlund’s first NHL season when he was physically too weak.

Laine may have had similar levels of hype, but with his case it was more warranted. Barkov didn’t reach the same levels as these two.

But I don’t want to argue. I just wanted to point out that I think some people either misunderstood Nyquil or then they weren’t here to see the hype.
