I’m done with # 47 on our team !!

As is human nature and perceptions I see Engvall differently that some others on here. I thought he played very well last night. On the puck constantly and gaining confidence when he has it on his stick offensively. I wanted him gone early in the season but am now impressed with his play. That line has been very good when out together. Is he physical?..Not in the slightest but he is showing how well he can play without the physicality. His skating and stick are getting the job done defensively. Will this style work in the playoffs?... We shall see one way or the other shortly.

Engvall needs to have more confidence and same as Kerfoot. They need to shoot at goal when they have a chance instead of always looking to pass.

Get them a personal coach. The NHL is still dino.

I have tried to advance the NHL And four on four after twenty years? It caught. But man. Behind the scenes? Not good.

These guys are like my bestie, still taking ice tubs after games?

Prehistoric? Ancient? Real bad.

Man it was so frustrating. The lack of physicality is one thing, but those lazy sticks are almost insulting to watch. Like dude, you must know that's not doing shit. They aren't even in the passing lanes, just brutal. I can't imagine what his teammates think of that effort.
Completely agree.
He didn’t even dress at the beggining of the year. With his size and speed, you would think he would bring a physical game when playing for his nhl career. Like think about it, not rocket science. Toronto needs some physicality, fans love players like that in Toronto.
Feel that extension came a little too fast last year. He has all the tools to be a good 3rd line forward, but clearly mismanaging his opportunity

My buddy, Shayne Corson, took on Alexei Yashin in the playoffs. He legally, defenced poor ole Alexei, so effectively Alexei, well he was just never the same.

Corson, like most NHLers will not brag about, barely feels comfortable talking about it at all. But I watched it, Alexei was about to become the top NHL player at that time.

Corson, had other ideas, and he got into the guys head, his everything.

Why is Corse, not engaged to teach that to players. Its not against the cap.

These are the advantages, Leafnation has. They finally figured out, hey, lets have the AHL team play in Toronto. DUH.

Lets get the greats doing some one on ones.

Robertson is American, so is Brett Hull Ugh duh.

I know Brett might have a job right now, but he is probably bored, knowing him lol.
I remember that series as a kid. Every shift of that series was replayed on corson just shadowing Yashin and just completely snatched his soul.
I even remember Zetterberg getting the best of Crosby in that cup finals too just shadowing and fustrating. I don’t care if my third line Center never scores a goal if he’s limiting and frustrating the other teams best.

If there is a problem with this team is he realy it? Or are there other things we should/could change?

The main reasons why and how we have failed in the last playoffs we’ve been in , is in the work or lack there of , of our bottom 6 .
We have matched and sometimes even over matched our opponents with our top 6 fire power , so that hasn’t been our downfall ..
But the toughness and passion and aggression of the bottom 6 of theirs ...
They have over matched us with their dogged and tough and tough commitment to the games .
We haven’t been able to match them there , be it Boston, Washington , Columbus , even in our regular season games , our bottom six traditionally have let us down in terms of toughness ( I don’t mean fighting and that sort of play )
We need to address this before we can move forward and compete
Think back to Boston’s Bottom Six in those series and also Washington’s ..
I hope we do

No, it's been 100 % Weak/Poor/Soft Defense, and lack of TEAM Defense.
Reilly is our #1, and he sucks defensively, once we started playing Columbus it exposed Barrie for the SoS (pick your own words to fill in the acronym) on defense he really is. ...Our D lost every puck battle, and made too many giveaways in key areas and left our goalie helpless more times in a game than should happen in a season.

right now:
Brodie is our best defender
Bogo has been better than expected defensively, but hasnt shown the toughness we expected
Muzzin is decent defensively but, not the fastest guy in the world, so, better as a PKer and not trying to skate with the elite players, and also not as tough as he used to be (ala Bogo)
Reilly is below average defensively
Dermott is below average defensively
Holl gets worse as the season wears on, same pattern every year, and makes the worst pinches of any defender on the team. ...he is only a 'revelation' because he sat on the bench and didnt play for as long as he did... he should still be, at best, a bottom pairing dman.

I really like Engvall myself. He should watch himself more often. Man, he is like the Swedish Swan. When he gets going, its something to behold.
Honestly, I am sure they present film to Pierre all the time. As they do with every player on the team. I'd be shocked if what I am saying is not part of their discussions with Pierre. There is a reason why Sheldon publicly has made comments that he needs more from Pierre, and why he has been healthied over guys like Bare and Vesey in the past. Even on Saturday when he scored, I thought he was not nearly as engaged in the play as he needed to be. I Thought the goal masked an overall poor performance from him TBH. I think my original point may not have been entirely clear. I am not looking for Darcy Tucker, or even a Leo Komorov Physicality. What I want to see is him be physically engaged in the play. I referenced Willy as a prime example of what type of physicality I can see Pierre playing. I don't need him to throw thunderous hits, although that would not be a bad thing either. I Just need him to use his big body to separate his opponent from the puck. Fly By's don't work at any level, Certainly not at the NHL level. Which has been a huge critique of Willy his whole career. I see the same thing in Pierre. Unfortunately Pierre has maybe an 1/8th of the skillset as Willy, and can't get away playing in that fashion. Willy has started to become more physically engaged in the play for over a month now. He is no longer stick checking exclusively, and more often than not uses his speed to gain position, and then his strong core to lean into his opponent to create turnovers/separation. Willy is not a player anyone would classify as physical, but he has found a way to bring that to his game. No reason Pierre can't. Another player who has seemingly adapted is Gally. There are many players that have done the very thing I am wanting Pierre to do. I will agree with some poster's saying it is likely confidence. He is playing with stones the size of peas right now. He has shown in the past just how effective he can be with the puck because of his deceptive speed. Lots of raw talent in Pierre, time to shit or get off the potty

I watch the same games you do Man. He has played soft as baby shit for several games now. Aside from the games where its Micheyev - Engvall - Hyman as a line, Pierre tends to be on the least effective line on the team. Call it coincidence or not. That to me speaks volumes to me. He has shown he can play this year, and in years past. He just needs to be more engaged in the play away from the puck. Everyone is entitled to there own opinion, But I will never be convinced that last game was a solid showing from Pierre. I think there is a reason why he was scratched early on, and in my opinion he is regressing to that form.

Right now he is best 3rd line centre we have ... he is big, fast and strong on puck ... if he was better on faceoffs and played more physically he would be perfect for playoff hockey .. is he ideal no .. but I'd rather get a left wing with some toughness and scoring and another goaler and a cheap vet defender to help us through playoff injuries ... need to give up Kerfoot and maybe another player to free up CAP to make it happen ... if we stay where we are at our best bet is 3rd round elimination ... maybe even 2nd round if we wind up playing Jets

Again, Engvall is everything we all wished Gauthier would have been.

And the Leafs didn’t waste the 21st overall pick on Engvall, either.
No disrespect, but outperforming Freddy Gaulthier is not much of an accomplishment. I agree most people's assessment on Pierre's potential as a 3C. He really does have a wealth of raw skill. There is no reason why he can't be an effective forechecker. Speed, Size, reach, just needs to be more assertive. It looks like he is playing afraid at times

As a 7th round pick and given that he's filling his role just fine... it is.

Some guys just don't have a mean bone in their bodies ... there are 3 things I found over da years which you either have when you start playing hockey or you don't ... hockey IQ, scoring ability and meanness on ice ... you can't teach any of those things they are innate skills ... but we could help him out with teaching him how to rub a guy out on boards

Draisaitl disagrees.

Yes absolutely, he has 100% been a huge success story from his draft position. That does not mean he is immune to criticism's. He has been slotted in the 4C slot for the last 5 games, which is comparable in ice time to the 3rd line in terms of TOI most nights. I have no issues with his production, and don't need him to produce any more than what he is presently doing. Truth be told, he should not be expected to produce on a 4L role. But he should be expected to be hard to play against. There were far too many shifts last game where he was not. And given that he only has about 13 shifts a game, he needs to make the most of them

in the last 2 games, Pierre played 31 shifts to Leon's 52 shifts. They hardly used Pierre in a designed matchup role. Sheldon predominantly went head to head with our top line against theirs. I am not sure if you know where there is a site to show TOI together, but I can all but guarantee it was not by design on Sheldon's end. All I know is Pierre ended that 2 game set with an even strength goal, and a minus 1. Leon on the other hand had 4 pts. So I'd imagine he must have been on the ice for at least a couple of those Pts

Matthews line was the prime matchup head to head, Engvall line the secondary matchup.

Engvall line played more against their top line than they did against any other line.

If you want more details, look up the full game reports on naturalstattrick.com and click on the "Opposition" tabs, and they break down exactly how everyone did matched up against everyone else.
