I'd take my chances that he is not on Makar's level. And what would this cost you if he does? An extra $1M per season ($8.5M vs $9.5M)? Would this really be that bad? I remember fans talking $9M with Slaf last summer. What's going to happen here is Hutson either extends (8x $8M ish) this summer or we let him play out the last ELC. Offering him $9M+ this summer is too gullible. We also burned one ELC contract year last year for 2 NHL games. This is a little leverage Gorton/Hughes can use.

Q Hughes started his deal in 21/22 ($81.5M cap). If you prorate the %, that's $8.6M for a $92M cap. And yes, Hughes signed for 6 years vs 8. But remember, Hughes was a top 10 pick and for as much as Hutson is producing well, Hughes has higher value.

8x $8M is where it will land and it's fair. Sophomore season to come and injuries could be a factor (you never know). I also think Demidov adding to our mix will create some roster shuffling. PP might be spread into two solid ones vs one good one and one meh one.
I hate college/university player ability to break one year of contract. I can see multiple top players from the junior going to university after getting drafted. This will give them the ability to burn one year of contract by playing 2-4 games at the end of season.

Side note - Lane Hutson / Kucherov / MSL etc are specifically why the draft & this whole “need to develop players better” is a red herring, and proof that a player either has elite hunger to work hard to achieve success or they don’t

Your own argument is a red herring and completely ommits the fact humans aren't serially programmed robots. We're all different and the ones you named are exceptions to the rule, thus proving the rule.

"elite hunger".. humanity is a rich tapestry and a lot of players have success without that "elite hunger".

Wasn't Slaf supposed to have that rag-to-riches "elite hunger"??

I love Suzuki, but he should be the first one to admit that Lane should be paid higher than him. His impact on the game is already greater and he will keep improving. If we can have him at 8x9, it will be a steal.

I would offer him a bridge deal. I want the two extra years of control on back end. From 30 to 32. Takes him through his prime years. If Montreal extends him at 22 he is up again at 30. Habs be in a dilemma then. If they lock him up at 24, takes him til '32. Get him cheaper also, in long run. First two years of the bridge. Then don't have to redo him while in his prime years.

Lol, people complain no elite in Montreal, and now we have 1 it is too expensive to pay for. You want a super star for cheap ? Forget it

I'm not sure about that one. We have to remember that he is not a complete D man and will always need sheltering. He's playing his rookie season at age 20/21 and is getting some serious offensive usage and ice time. I think his offensive zone starts are 62%+. I'm not trying to devalue him, more like a honest context approach looking at all angles beyond points.

This reminds me of some fans thinking Slaf will get $9M this past summer.

8x $7M or $7.5M. If Hutson wants to maximize, maybe the term gets dropped to 6 years (taking him to age 27 like Q Hughes). I know Hughes signed 3 years ago with a different cap but Hutson is a notch below him IMO.

There's no such thing as "sheltering" when you're playing 25 minutes a night. Yeah O zone starts are high at 65%. Guess what, Q Hughes Norris winner is at 70% this season, Makar is at 62%. Offensively gifted Ds gets lots of offensive minutes, that's not a knock on them lmao.

What is the benefit for Hutson in that scenario? If you offer anything less than 8 years the only two scenarios you're getting in return is either a 5 year deal that takes him straight to UFA at 27 or a 2-3 year deal followed by an 8 digits AAV. Both are foolish. Sign him now to full term and worry about the rest in 8 years from now. Also not sure what you mean by "don't have to redo him while in his prime years". 22-24 ARE prime years. Actually far more likely he hits a career year at 22-24 than he does at 29-30. Basically the worst possible time to sign him if you want to lower the pain.

He worth everything man. He is insane talent, but insane compete level aswell.

This guy is a superstar.

Under 8 for 8 years, that's a STEAL.

Disagree my friend. Defensemen are much more likely to have a later prime .

The market usually always dictates this sort of thing but make no mistake about it, we all love Lil'Lane but Nick F'n Suzuki is the team's best player.

Ummmmm, no.

Hutson was left to cook in the NCAA for two years, where he got to grow and work on his fundamentals in peace.
