I hate college/university player ability to break one year of contract. I can see multiple top players from the junior going to university after getting drafted. This will give them the ability to burn one year of contract by playing 2-4 games at the end of season.I'd take my chances that he is not on Makar's level. And what would this cost you if he does? An extra $1M per season ($8.5M vs $9.5M)? Would this really be that bad? I remember fans talking $9M with Slaf last summer. What's going to happen here is Hutson either extends (8x $8M ish) this summer or we let him play out the last ELC. Offering him $9M+ this summer is too gullible. We also burned one ELC contract year last year for 2 NHL games. This is a little leverage Gorton/Hughes can use.
Q Hughes started his deal in 21/22 ($81.5M cap). If you prorate the %, that's $8.6M for a $92M cap. And yes, Hughes signed for 6 years vs 8. But remember, Hughes was a top 10 pick and for as much as Hutson is producing well, Hughes has higher value.
8x $8M is where it will land and it's fair. Sophomore season to come and injuries could be a factor (you never know). I also think Demidov adding to our mix will create some roster shuffling. PP might be spread into two solid ones vs one good one and one meh one.
