I need a new laptop.

Good price/performance would be nice. In practice I won't need much performance but I don't want it immediately obsolete.

Windows 10, but hopefully with good Linux compatibility because I'm gonna make her a dual-booter soon enough. Though I don't completely want to write of getting a Macbook.

Preferably more ports than less. I don't mind it being thick, I don't want the needless overheating issues and there is lots of dust in my life.

I could live with it being plastic, but would aluminium body be more worthwhile?

Was going to bring up the Asus Zenbook I picked up this year if not for the ports part of the equation. If there's one spot for criticism on this device it's the lack of ports beyond the single standard USB3.2 and a USB-C on the opposite side. The purchase of an external USB hub was an absolute necessity with this thing, and that seems to be the direction manufacturers are trending right now.

Workstation class laptops still tend to have a fair number of ports however they tend to be big and heavy. (Not like 17" big though that is an option) (also not CHEAP!)
Honestly I miss the old 15" with DVD's

But ultra slims are where the market is moving..

Yep. I mean the good news is this thing is super durable and you can get a decent usb hub adding another 4-6 ports worth of connection for less than $20. I meant the plus side is that it's able to connect to Bluetooth devices with no issues but the flip of that is that it involves picking up yet another set of additional devices since most everything up until a few years ago was USB based.

Various Lenovo _____pads, Acer Swift 3 or 5... or should I buy an entry-level gaming laptop, though they are all 15". Damn these markets.

edit: And rather 14" than 15" because I like the tall enter key on the Swedish (Finnish) ISO laptop keyboard and quite often it seems to not be there in the full keyboard with numpad that comes there starting from the 15" models.

Those bolded statements are incompatible. I have a Macbook Pro, and I wouldn't recommend getting one going forward if you want to dual boot. They are going to their own chips again (M1, no longer using Intel Si) so who knows what boot options you will have.

I don't post a ton but my dad had a heart attack this morning, I was able to visit and he's doing pretty well all things considered. They were able to perform a catherization and remove a blockage that was causing an artery to function at 30% capacity. He'll be in the ICU for a few days but just looking for some good vibes our way. Seems like hfcanes can't catch a break lately, although I'm extremely greatful that he seems in good spirits and is still around to talk to me

I'm sorry to hear about your dad's emergency, but I'm glad to hear they had room for him in an ICU and that he is doing ok now.

Yes, I know they are. Good points worth of making though, especially the M1 one. I'm looking to buy a new MacBook for the wife so I'm aware of that situation. I probably wouldn't be dualbooting the Mac if I'd get one.

I hold Apple responsible for this thinness obsession, and their port choices are made to sell their own peripherals and adapters and payable solutions. But this far I've got years and years and years of usage for my Apple things so funnily enough they meet my price/performance need in their own wacky way.

Wishing the best for you and your dad. It's never easy being a son as parents age.

My close workmate had this same operation in the spring. He seems to be up to speed again nowadays. Taking crapload of pills every morning though.

Very sorry to hear that. Not sure how old your Dad is, but my father had a heart attack and with bypass surgery and statin drugs, lived an active life for another 30 years. Wishing the best for you, your father, and the rest of your family.

My dad had a heart attack and a triple bypass about ten years ago. After his recovery and losing 50 pounds, the hardest part was telling him that no, he wasn't now "cleaned out" and able to return to eating everything he could get his hands on.

Glad to hear yours is doing better and on his way to recovery. Sending you all good thoughts.

He's 67 and quite active. He just got home from a 10 day kayaking trip a few days ago and was about to go on another one tomorrow. Thank God this happened between trips. Hopefully they get him on a regimen where he can stay at least somewhat active.

Anyone else here follow tennis? Has been a pretty damn great US Open.

The women's bracket was insane, 18 year old qualifier won it yesterday against another teenager underdog. First qualifier to ever win a Grand Slam, men's or women's.

Now Djokovic, going for a historic calendar Grand Slam and men's record 21 titles, is playing in the finals right now against young upstart Russian Medvedev. Djokovic has been starting to fall apart here in the 2nd set, several unforced errors and displays of lack of composure (smashed his racket and received a warning).

I have a 13.3" HP Elitebook 735 G6 as a work laptop. Had it for a year, so far I've been quite pleased - nice keyboard, feels sturdy, light and comfortable to use. Didn't pay for it myself, so I have no idea what price they sell for.

Just wanted to share a picture I found of a telephone tower from the 1890s. I cannot honestly believe someone (assumedly multiple people) saw the plan for how this tower was going to work and decided "Yeah, that works. I can't see why doing it like that wouldn't eventually become an issue."

Looks like the wiring in my first house.
