So I'm not gay.

But if I was....

Dax Shepard. Right?

After a quick Google search, I can't get past the crazy fake smile he's got in like 90% of these photos.

That's the face of a man who's either holding in a large bowel movement or he got a hernia right before the cameras arrived and he's really trying not to let them see the agonizing pain he's in

All that tells me is he's incredibly tough and stoic in addition to being incredibly handsome, successful and charismatic.

It’s really not so black and white. My dog is still as happy and joyful as he’s ever been and still in good enough overall shape that he’s not hurting at all, just slowing down. Not on any meds and no serious issues, just normal aging things. It’s never an easy decision for anyone and nobody wants their dog to suffer and just live in pain. We can’t exactly ask them how they feel or whether they want to live or die. If I thought like you I would’ve probably had the dog put down when he had his vestibular spell since it wasn’t looking good at that time, but that would’ve been a mistake as he was never in any pain or discomfort during that spell and then he fully recovered within weeks and has been back to his normal happy self since then.

I wasn’t saying it’s black and white at all. It’s highly emotionally charged, which is why IMO an awful lot of the time the desire to delay a horrible emotional experience leads people down the road of multiple surgeries, daily medications, etc. Meanwhile the animal suffers through a life we wouldn’t wish on them. To me, the more humane option is to put them down at a point prior to the severe onset of old age. It’s not a popular opinion but it’s the one I hold.

For context, I’m also an advocate for people having the right to set terms for their own euthanasia. From my point of view, we drag a lot of people through appalling end-of-life scenarios for no real reason other than putting off death for another day. I have no desire to experience that, certainly not as a passenger to someone else’s emotional turmoil, and would prefer to be able to dictate my own terms for departure if for example I were to contract a terminal disease.

I have heard a very wide variety of opinions on this.

Go **** yourself.

You know, maybe consider the fact that people who are sharing emotional stories about their aging and ailing animals, and being vulnerable with each other, could use a little comfort and reassurance, and not a tone deaf lecture about how maybe they're not making the right decisions about euthanizing their animals. It's not your place to tell anyone how to love their dogs right. Damn.

How many times do I need to literally underline the letters IMO and repeat the phrase this is “just my point of view” before it sinks in that I’m not lecturing or telling anyone what to do?

FFS, you are reading the worst possible intent into my words and I have no idea why. If you disagree, that’s fine, just move on. OT express your own differing opinion, also totally fine. The open contempt is uncalled for.

On when to put a pet down: I've got a hunch we're going to have some back and forth posts before everyone realizes that most are thinking along the same lines but the limitations of putting thought to words makes it seem like there are very divergent views. Of course, I could be wrong.

Nah, you nailed it. well done sir.

Bag pipes? Screw that noise.

I told my wife I will haunt her if she plays bagpipes at my funeral.

And not the patrick swayze kind of romantic haunt either

I've been thinking a lot about my final wishes. Because let's be honest, between genetics and all my existing health issues, I ain't gonna make it if I get the coco.

I definitely want a closed casket and I want my eulogy to be a straight-up roast session. The first song will be Stevie Ray Vaughan's Life Without You. The second song will be a bagpipes version of Amazing Grace. The third song, as people leave the chapel, will be David Lee Roth's cover of Just a Gigolo.

The fourth and final song will be Guns N Roses November Rain, and during the outro when that guitar solo is really wailing, I want my body to be doused in gasoline, set on fire and shot out of a cannon into the Ohio River
I plan on requesting that a player from the Sabres, Bengals, Mets, Red Bulls, Knicks and Carlton FC carry my casket so they can all let me down one last time.

if we're doing funeral songs, i'm going with the grateful dead's brokedown palace.

Fare you well my honey
Fare you well my only true one
All the birds that were singing
Have flown except you alone

Going to leave this broke-down palace
On my hands and my knees I will roll, roll, roll
Make myself a bed by the waterside
In my time, in my time, I will roll, roll, roll

In a bed, in a bed
By the waterside I will lay my head
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul
River gonna take me
Sing me sweet and sleepy
Sing me sweet and sleepy
All the way back back home

It's a far gone lullaby
Sung many years ago
Mama, mama, many worlds I've come
Since I first left home

Going home, going home
By the waterside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul

Going to plant a weeping willow
On the banks green edge it will grow, grow, grow
Sing a lullaby beside the water
Lovers come and go, the river roll, roll, roll

Fare you well, fare you well
I love you more than words can tell
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul

As a Scottish descendent, Amazing Grace on the pipes is a beautiful thing. I realize I may be in the minority with that opinion however.

It is. I've told my wife that she should play that for me, even though I won't be there. And then, when she's ready for everyone to leave, to put on some noise-canceling headphones and play Flipper's "Sacrifice" on repeat until everyone leaves.

I'm with you. There are videos out there for those who haven't seen it, but the thing about bagpipes is they create an energy in person that just gets lost in a recording. Maybe it's the volume of the instrument, maybe it's that some of the notes just don't get picked up well in a microphone or speaker. You really have to experience it for yourself.

The first (and only) time I experienced it, I was in awe. It was like being inside the music, as if you could just step into sound and put it on like a long coat.

And I wasn't even stoned, either

Well put. I have heard it said that the pipes are the voice and battle cry of long dead warriors

Am I the only person who wants Charlotte FC to fail badly as punishment for MLS for snubbing the Triangle?

Similarly, will the Triangle ever get a second major pro sports team or does the civic will just not exist here? It's annoying to see a smaller metro like Cincinnati have more going for it sports wise than here because they were bigger and had the civic will we sadly lack for MLS. What are we doing wrong?
