I’d be fine in isolation with no power. We don’t have internet and spotty cell service at our farm, so spend a lot of time reading. We were without power a few times so had to use flashlights and lanterns.

I get your point though. My kids who are closer to your age would hate it.

That was the whole point of my mountain land. No power; much later no cell service. Wonderful.

When my kids were younger, we had a place on Hyco Lake where we had no internet and no cell service at the house. We had a land line for emergency. My kids spent all day on the lake, and every night was sitting by the fire, playing board games, fishing, looking for satellites, catching fireflies, watching DVD movies or reading books. My wife insisted on no internet and I objected, but she was right.

The only time I saw a game of monopoly finished was my kids at the lake.

I know, I’m old and it’s outdated, but my kids still remember those times.

I think they’d probably hate it now though.

Our house's power was only out for about 6-7 hours down here in coastal SC, and all the damage we had was some fallen tree branches. No flooding thankfully. So grateful because even though winds were "only" 40-50 mph with some 60-70 mph gusts, things got really squirrelly at times just watching the big oak trees in our yard swaying back and forth.

These Ian guys suck.

I know it sucks but I'm sure the linemen are doing their best to get everyone back online ASAP. They're probably stretched thin with all the storm chasers linemen still in Florida and to a lesser extent South Carolina. The no text update is kinda shitty though.

I think the lack of text updates are because there are so many outages, they probably don't have a good outlook to give. When I looked at their outage map late last night, every single outage said for Estimate time of Restoration: "Repairs and Damage Assessment Underway."

In the past when we lost power and it wasn't as widespread, I've found Duke Energy's communication on the outages quite good so I suspect it's just the sheer volume.

That's my guess as well. This is the first time it's been this bad about the outage updates, and that includes having lost power to two other storms a couple years back in the same location.

just (finally) got the same. hate to admit it but I'm just hanging out down at a brewery with the dog at this point since they have network connection and power, which means I can keep hacking away at my final project for this current class. Just 3 more classes to go after this one hopefully.
