Fema is complete garbage and the response would be completely different in the NJ/NY/MA area than it is in NC.

Perhaps we wouldn't spread so thin if we stopped giving money to other countries so they hate us just a little less, no? Nah. F that.
FEMA has a very long history of inadequacy under multiple administrations from both sides of the isle.

I just can’t wrap my head around the mindset of “Oh, these people have had their lives turned upside down. My job is to help. But because they’re picking a different political party to be useless for 4 years, I’m not going to help them.”

EDIT: I’m not going to comment on the rest. Got threadbanned once already, not worth risking.

Not specifically in this scenario, but in general, I have actually seen PLENTY of this happen in real-world situations...so it's not exactly far fetched or hard to imagine. But I think this is more just typical FEMA/gov't is ALWAYS horribly slow to do things due to red-tape bureaucracy

The performance of FEMA and other federal agencies that the right doesn't like is a self fulfilling prophesy for them when they constantly vote to deny the agency the funding needed to do their jobs.

I think there's different levels of it. I understand disagreeing or arguing with those of the opposite political party. I even understand cutting those with opposing political views out of your life (though I caution that easily leads to echo chambers).

But when a disaster hits, when someone is in desperate need of aid, I like to believe humanity takes precedent over political views. I also believe that, for the most part, the government isn't withholding aid to those who MIGHT vote for the opposing party. And I say that knowing that Trump did exactly that when California was dealing with wildfires.

The most surprising election reveal to me is that husbands can accompany their wives into the voting booth in NC.

I can't imagine.

The biggest shock I've found out during this election cycle is that for many states, there's no enforcement with regards to a "faithless elector" (an elector who ignores the votes of the people they're supposed to represent and votes however they want)

38 states have laws in place preventing faithless electors from happening, but apparently half of those don't actually enforce those laws. Others don't have laws in place, but will void the vote and fine the elector for attempting it. And then a surprising number of states will simply count the vote of the elector, regardless of whether it's what the people voted for

Lots of hidden stuff in the cove if you know where to look.
We saw a momma bear and her cubs right on the side of the road munchin on some acorns or something. Like feet away from the car not long after we left the kiosk where you buy a ticket that enables you to park. Those were the only animals we saw and 2 hours later on the way out there was still a line of cars waiting to see them. The one thing I didn’t like about the experience was the damn rental UTVs. Like these people drove however long to get there to be out in nature and decided to park their car and rent a loud ass noise machine. So annoying.

Sorry, just so we’re clear: Are you saying the aid to Western NC is “being slow rolled” because they’re likely to vote Republican in the upcoming election?

As opposed to one of the many other explanations like:
- It’s not actually being “slow rolled” and workers are doing the best they can given the size and scope of the damage of the region. And I’m sure it being a mountainous area that’s unprepared for a hurricane to hit it doesn’t help speed things along either.
- FEMA is spread thin because not only do they have to help Western NC but also the Florida area…twice, all with a severely cut budget due to previous administrations.
- As mentioned earlier, there are those out there actively hunting FEMA workers, which would understandably make it more difficult to get aid to said areas safely.

- No, it's not being deliberately "slow rolled". When I got out there 700 National Guard and 1200 FEMA were there. That is not enough for a disaster zone the size of Belgium, but they were doing what they could. The Governor should have had more boots on the ground early (although my former unit wasn't available because they were in Iraq FFS). When the enormity of the damage became apparent the Biden admin should have immediately declared it a Title 10 operation, turned it over to NORTHCOM and ordered the 82nd Airborne in. They didn't come in for over a full 2 weeks.

- FEMA is spread thin. They are also constrained by bureaucracy and a "top down" approach, not appropriately engaging with locals for on the ground intel. The only time I saw them in action was in the neighborhood I was staying in Banner Elk, which was undamaged and had electricity restored, doing "welfare checks" which was useless. They are processing damage claims for folks rapidly however. I never saw a single official out in the towns- only fellow volunteers, by the hundreds. And the DOT. They did a freaking amazing job- laying down makeshift roads infront of us as we ran in supplies.

- There is literally nobody hunting FEMA, its fake news. Couple of good old boys in a truck encountered NG and were like "You boys FEMA? No? Well good, we don't like FEMA" and that was it. That's coming straight from the cops out there.

At the end of the day- it is the same old thing- government being somewhat inept and slow to respond. But they didn't interfere with us or make things worse- those are false stories as well. The good news is people out there are mad self-sufficient, pulled together and tons of people with resources spammed the area and organized quickly. Lots of great lessons learned for next time.
