They sent me out on a recon today
How does it work out in practical terms when military guys set out on an ad hoc voluntary mission like this? I would assume everyone more or less is in the same opinion that some sort of command structure is the most efficient way to get things done and people where they need to be.

So they have a tactical operations center set up in the hangar. They have a morning brief everyday, and then start sending out flights for resupply and medical missions. Other folks are sent out to recon or chainsaw missions via ground. They track everything on google earth, you put your contact info on a piece of paper and put it in the "Out" box and then put it back in the "In" box when you come back. If at the end of the day anything is in the "Out" box they come looking for you.

You then write down the particulars in a logbook from what you saw/accomplished. All highly organized and run like an actual military mission. White boards, computers, satcom the whole nine yards. And piles of Zyn cans 😁

Thanks for not only doing what you are doing, but also for giving us insight into things. I really appreciate it. My son graduated from UNC Asheville so we've spent a lot of time in that areas and have friends who live there and in the surrounding areas. I've heard from all but 1 that they are safe, but the one I didn't hear from never communicates much in the first place. The pictures, videos and what they've shared with me is unimaginable (as you stated earlier).

Canucks fan here, but I had to come to the Hurricanes boards to ask this question,

Can someone please share some of their favourite sandwich recipes ?
a specialty from when I worked at the Deli at a local grocery store... and technically not a sandwich:

1/4lb cracked pepper turkey breast
1/8lb Monterey jack
romaine
a bit of salsa
tortilla shell (especially if you can get something flavored like sundried tomato-basil)

and you've got a hell of a wrap

Two of my favorites right now:

1) Pesto and Tomato Panini: Ciabatta bread, spread homemade pesto on each side, add some Tomato Garlic oil (I use Cheeky Monkey out of Syracuse), thinly sliced Roma Tomatoes, and real Mozzarella cheese and then press it in a panini press.

2) A true Cuban - Cuban Bread, Mustard, Pickles, Swiss Cheese, Ham, Roasted Pork, and Butter. I've seen some places also add Salami, but I prefer it without.

I'm not a huge Rueben fan, but the one I had at Zingerman's deli in Ann Arbor was incredible. I've tried a few times to replicate it but I can't quite get there. It must be either their own dressing or the way they do the Kraut, but who knows.

When I was younger, my mother and grandmother used to make homemade Porchetta sandwiches. Those were incredible. Unfortunately, I don't have her recipe, which was passed down from her mother. I've tried a few recipes online, but it's not the same. Plus, my wife doesn't eat beef or pork so it would be too much for 1 person.

Dont know where to find cuban bread in Danville but there is a small Cuban deli/restaurant in Reidsville that has fantastic Cubano's.

Speaking of the local area. My youngest (15) started watching Bojack Horseman which is a little weird for me, however she was watching this morning and I heard the following dialog "Where are you at?, Eden NC." Also mention later in the show "The greater Greensboro, High point, Triad, metropolitan area" and finally "we need to go the the Danville Target"

Thought that was kind weird so I did some research. Amy Sedaris lived in Raleigh from the age of 4 and voices on of the characters and one of the writers is from Eden.

She had her own show on TruTV like 5 years ago. I didn't think anything about it except my mom was watching the network when her ad comes on and says something like "God that name sounds familiar". Turns out they both attended Sanderson High school.

The brother (David) has some amusing stories about growing up in Raleigh in the 70s vs what it is now.

The Rooster is still around town - which makes sense, since you can't kill the Rooster.

I've seen that place in Reidsville but never tried it so I'll have to give it a try next time. I had a lake house on Hyco Lake for about 10 years and my next door neighbor at the lake is the owner Short Sugar's BBQ , so I'll usually hit up that place if I'm in town.
