Rumor: Hurricanes could look to flip Rantanen if he doesn’t extend by the deadline

I genuinely don’t know what CAR would want in a trade for him

Trading Necas was such a blunder

Eh, Necas was never staying in Carolina. They tried to move him to multiple teams this past off-season, but he nixed every possible trade. So the Canes signed him to a short term deal, making it obvious their intentions were always going to be exploring the market with him again.

As for trading for Rantanen itself, it was a high risk play. They offered him the money he wants, but no one could have seen this drop in production.

Frankly, trading for a player that's always been with one organization and never hit FA just seems like an overly risky move in general. Of course they're going to want to explore the market, given their first opportunity to do so.

gotta always get Toronto in there lol

True, but I have absolutely zero doubt that Treliving has made a inquiry about him. And from the little I understand about GMing, they don't typically call each other just to price check. They call because they think there's something there worth discussing.

Whether that should be considered very serious interest is debatable, and it's doubtful Toronto has the assets, but if the feeling in MLSE land is that Marner could walk in June then I'd bet Treliving's intentions at least are very serious.

(And just to be clear, I think there's almost no chance Rantanen ends up a Maple Leaf by Friday.)

Not even close tbh and not trying to be snarky or dismissive but there’s nothing in there that’s remotely interesting. Knies has to be included at the barest of minimums
unless Rantanen is re-signing I don't think you're getting anyone close to Knies in value...he's a powerforward pacing for 30 goals in his sophomore season

Considering LA is souring on Clarke, it seems like he's a natural fit. Though I believe Carolina is best off just keeping Rantanen as a self-rental and seeing if he wants to re-sign after the playoffs

You don’t want to bring in a guy like this. Twice now, he was near impossible during contract negotiations. The first time, it got done but if you’re the third team he ends up on this season, you dont want that in your culture.

Someone is going to pay this guy 13m and they’re going to regret it.
