It’s kind of crazy Carolina didn’t ask for permission to talk to his agent before the trade considering they went through this last year with Guentzel
This was definitely more Sakic's doing than anyone else's. They were talking contract extensions and Rantanen's camp either tried to use leverage inappropriately or just plain f***ed around and found out. There was no reason to trade him. Like not even a little. I have to imagine it was because Sakic settled on a number he wasn't budging on. When Rantanen was put on the market, Carolina had the best offer. And their logic was they'd either upgrade from Necas or get one hell of an offer for Rantanen

f*** checking with Rantanen's agent. You just ask Sakic what Rantanen wanted before you offer Necas at all. Otherwise Rantanen's agent gets wind of it and raises holy hell about how Sakic will just trade you to Carolina to get you to sign for what he wants

If Rantanen wants to win - do a trade with Florida and take a discount like 4x 10M. Then theres still time to cash in one more time.

Florida get:

Rantanen @ 4.75M, extension in place for 4x 10M

Carolina get:

- Verhaeghe signed until 2033 @ 7M
- 1st 2026

Reinhart - Barkov - Rantanen
Tkachuk - Bennett - Rodrigues
Luostarinen - Lundell - Boqvist

Thats a damn fine Top9

There’s zero chance Rantanen takes 4x10, taxes or not. That’s just dreamland.

Carolina is still one of the top teams in the league and they have the ammo to do more before the deadline.

I’m not sure how being on a team that has the same record as the Panthers qualifies for “get me out of here, this team isn’t trying to win”.

Adding to this. Even if they sign Rantanen to 13-14 per, they still have a TON of $$$ (25+ mil) to add to their team next year. Morrow(Possibly) & Nikishin (100%) ELC's take the spots of Orlov/Burns and the fwd group could see Nadeau/FUS. Canes look good if they can get Rantanen signed.

And if he gets a fluke injury that stunts or even ends his career, say two years in. Well, he's now lost upwards of 28M dollars over seven years.

There's a reason players rarely, if ever, take huge discounts like that. Is a career ending injury likely? No. But all it takes is one wrong play and millions of dollars go up in flames.

The more this nonsense develops, the more glad I become that the Avs sidestepped this whole thing. I think he'd have been doing this exact same contract dance with the Avs straight to free agency. I don't think it has anything to do with Carolina specifically.

The player wants top dollar and the strongest evidence IMO is that he still hasn't fired his agent or even spoken ill of him once.

Check Floridas roster:

Barkov 10M
Tkachuk 9,5M
Reinhart 8,625M
Lundell 5M
Forsling 5,75M

All signed longterm. This is a receip for winning. Nice weather, good team and a chance to win every year. Also taxes. If getting 20% more cash is more important for a superrich player, then I actually wonder how many braincells he has. All the guys above took a discount to win and they did.

How does one evaluate the 'price' of acquiring Rantanen for 20 games without knowing the quality of the return they are going to receive when they trade him?

Fair question, but speculation is unavoidable now. Personally, if they do move him, i have a hard time the return will equate to necas. That said, i think they may be able to find a return that does improve their roster, at least in the short term. I suppose you can’t rule out a flip for marner, maybe something with win around ehlers in terms of high end talents around the same age. Maybe boston decides to really tear it down and theres a way to work out mcavoy/marchand together. Maybe chicago for jones/a fwd not named bedard which…is basically nothing…prob need a 3rd team there. Maybe provorov+ in cbus. Buf might also work around cozens or byram +…but any deals for non ufa’s means that team will want an extension in place pre-trade…which pretty much rules out buf.

One deal i think might be entertained and would work out fantastic for car is fiala in la. He’d thrive in the car system…idno where la is cap wise but for my money fiala, ehlers+, and marner are the best options that might be available as approximate 1-1 deals. Outside of those it gets really complicated where returns are more sum of the parts or rantanen will have to agree to extend in the deal.

Kevin Weekes- “I'm told the offer to Rantanen is north of 13M in and around the 13-14 million dollar number”. r/hockey • in 3 hr. Kevin ...

I thought 100 million would get it done. But now it’s looking like Rantanen wants 110+!
Trade him.

Those deals happened in a different cap era and if Rantanen wasn't going to take anywhere near this discount in Colorado where the the conversation was in the $12m range then why would he do it here? He would literally be back tracking on everything he has said an done up to this point.
