Sometimes people seem to forget that the player can sign a new contract after where they get paid to play that 8th year. Yes I know they are older, but the cap is also higher. It's not like they make zero dollars that 8th year.

This trade was dumb for the Canes from the start. Necas was doing incredible there and had the extra year. There was no guarantee that Rantanen would’ve signed there, and even more than that he was not even aware he was getting shoped so he was taken by surprise. It’s not like his agent talked to him before to see if he would be open to re-signing there. They made the trade knowing he might not stay there.
Now you have a player that was not particularly happy to get traded, that potentially does not want to sign, that has not played well with his new team, and that now might get traded because you don’t want to lose him for nothing.

If they can get an impact forward with term, I could see the allure of trading him. However, if they can only get futures I’d keep him for a run at the Cup; let the pieces fall where they may.

It would, I'm not sure how they would do it because they don't have a 1st until 2027 and if I'm not mistaken every other team I mentioned at least has a 1st in 2026.
Plus given the amount of draft picks and prospects they have traded away I imagine their farm system is among the worst, if not the worst in the entire league.
But Vegas always seems to find a way to get a player if they want them.
and where is vegas gonna come up with 14m to re-sign him while also filling out the rest of the roster. They only have 16 players signed for next season.

agree , use him as your rental and who knows what can happen if they have a good run - maybe he bonds with the new teammates and decides to stay .
they've drafted extremely well so while it sucks to potentially lose both Necas and Mikko they will bounce back
A lot of players are out of the league by 36. Or aren’t making anywhere near that money.

I don’t disagree in principle. But lots of platers just signed for term knowing the cap was going up.

It certainly looks like he's not interested in Carolina. But then he might also think that Colorado already kicked him out, so he might feel unwelcome and will not sign with them, even if they offer a suitable contract. He also has a cup already, so maybe he doesn't feel the pressure to join a contender outright.
Then it's down to what teams he actually wants to play for, and if they have the cap space.
I spent some time reading Finnish articles and interviews from his younger years, and I didn't come across any mention of any "dream team" he would like to play for if he made it to NHL.
If I had to guess, purely based on the 4 nations tournament, he seemed to gel very well with Barkov, so perhaps Florida could be something he would consider.

Dougie was a fantastic fit. The front office just didn’t think he was worth 9 million a year for 7/8 years.
He won’t cost them 14. They are a tax free state.
They also easily could move on from players like karlson/roy/ etc

We have 3-4 years to clear up cap space for Demidov and we aren't even sure he will play at a level that would require to pay him that much. Players of Rantanens caliber do not hit UFA that often. We will have plenty of cap space with Gallagher/Price and whoever else coming off the books COMBINED with the cap going up the next 3-4 seasons.

We're all working on incomplete information. No point for this entire forum to exist if we can't speculate or make assumptions. We aren't professional journalists here with a reputation to uphold.
I don't think it's a stretch to say the Avs didn't trade him without an indication he was looking for a crazy amount of money. There was a lot of smoke around the fact that he was eyeing Draisaitl's 14 million as a comparable. He came out after the trade and said he would've taken a discount to stay but clearly through months of negotiations the Avs didn't think that to be true.
Now there's rumours of Carolina preparing a 100 million + deal over 8 years with simultaneous rumblings of him being flipped again.
Obviously I don't know what's really true or what he's thinking but again, what's the point of these forums if we don't discuss and make assumptions. The information made available to us at least makes it seem like he's solely focused on that big 14 million/year payday and not much else.

For him to get 100M on the open market over 7 years it would take an AAV offer of 14.29 to get there.
Of course Mikko could always sign another contract after but we’re talking about almost a decade from now. A lot can change between now and then.
