Tampa is definitely the model I'd like to follow in terms of drafting and development

Hard to name a better team at it than they are. To be successful the Leafs will need to start finding ways to get impact players out of later picks/unexpected prospects like Tampa did with Point
Agreed.
Once Wonder Boy/Shanahan/Keefe And ALL Hires Made By Them Are Fired.
Then we should build a playoff 4 round winner.
Never happen with these Morons in charge.
This is so easy to see.
Look at results.
Period.

What does playing the sport have to do with anything?

The two things aren’t linked at all. Michael Jordan was a horrible executive. By your logic he should’ve been one of the best.

Julien BriseBois is about to win two cups in a row. Guess how much hockey he played?
Being a great player doesn’t guarantee being great at management but I’d definitely agree playing the sport at a high level should be a prerequisite. Brisebois would clearly be the exception. He at least understands that playoff hockey is physical and addressed his roster accordingly. Still waiting on Dubas…

Would that be like adding Simmonds, Foligno and Bogosian? Or do those physical players not count since we lost?

Fact is, after last year a lot of people said our depth was too cute and not built for the playoffs. Same with our D. Dubas went out and added to the defense while building a bigger, physically stronger and more experienced forward group.

And if there is one thing Kyle Dubas has shown comfort doing throughout his seven years with the Toronto Maple Leafs, it’s thinking differently than his peers
intentionally going out of his way to think differently is his biggest weakness as a gm

And it followed this weird phenomena where previously physical players do not bring that style of play to Toronto.

Most GM's in the game today have played in the NHL or AHL. It's obviously not a requirement but I would say there's a lot of value in having those insights in your organization in a leadership role.

Bob Murray, Bill Armstrong, Kevyn Adams, Don Sweeney, Joe Sakic, Steve Yzerman, Ken Holland, Rob Blake, Bill Guerin, Marc Bergevin, Tom Fitzgerald, Chris Drury, Ron Hextall, Doug Wilson, Brian MacLellan, Kevin Cheveldayoff, Jim Benning, Jarmo Kekalainen, Jim Nill as well as guys on the sidelines like Jim Rutherford, Brian Burke in upper management, even our president Brendan Shanahan, etc.

Sometimes you feel like landing on the Toronto Maple Leafs is a lot of guys idea of Freedom 55 in the NHL. Cashmere sweater draped over the shoulder, on a sailboat sliding into the golden sunset.

Bogosian and Simmonds looked about the same as normal. I'd like a little more physical play from Thornton, but it's been a while since he was the aggressor. Foligno was noticeably hurt, but still seemed to be similar to normal.

I could see an analytics team concluding that Auston Matthews needs to start shooting more from certain spots on the ice, or worse that he needs to start shooting a bit more in general, and I could see a gm who never played going along with it. But an ex-player knows Matthews talent isn't just shooting it's finding those rare moments in a game when the stars align and there's a glimmer of daylight behind the goalie and that's when his real talent kicks in and time slows down for him and suddenly the puck is in the back of the net. And then he's celebrating with that dorky-but-sorta-cool guts post and primal shout. So he rightfully spends most of the game chasing those moments but if he consciously starts trying to shoot more or starts forcing it from certain spots on the ice he gives up on looking for those moments and that is a terrible idea

But there have also been arguments made that this is because the NHL tends to only really look at specific sources for potential upper management...

Pro sports definitely draws from its own small pool of people...

Taking off the skates and letting the feet dabble in the water...then heading into the cabin for a glass of wine instead of the penalty box for a mouth full of gatorade...who needs a punch in the face when you could feel the cool breeze on the cheeks? :sarcasm:

we're just a rudderless ship drifting towards the abyss

this hire is more nonsense from Dubas to try to make it look like he's accomplishing something

Yeah adding 4th liners who play 8 ES minutes really changes a team identity. Just like Clifford last year. Do you really believe that junk? Foligno was a good acquisition that didn’t pan out unfortunately but he was a rental. Which meant max 1 playoff run

Mikeyhev, Engvall and Kerfoot are some of the softest players around. Go look at Tampa’s 3rd line

The third line averaging a little under 6'? I love the line, especially Gourde, but they're not a big intimidating group. You wanted physical players added and they were.

The Leafs turned over half their roster. Foligno came over as a top 6 forward, Brodie as a top pairing D. Simmonds was playing third line often.

Coleman and Goodrow both hit and fight and can play 15-20. If you’re happy with 4th line plugs representing the team physicality there’s no discussion here

I'm happy adding depth and grit throughout the lineup. Like the addition of Foligno as a top 6 forward and Muzzin as a top 4 D.

Dollar for dollar we’re paying almost as much for Engvall, Kerfoot and Mikeyhev as Tampa paid for Coleman, Goodrow and Gourde. It’s about philosophy and it’s about finding the NEXT group of players like that. Coleman and Goodrow both getting raises

Not sure what salary has to do with anything. Your initial claim was that TB added grit and toughness, I responded with names of recent Leafs acquisitions that meet that criteria as well.

While we've done this, it hasn't changed the results at all.
