He should absolutely be extended. He is easily the best C available on the market this year, and letting him go, for Gourde, or Granlund would make the team worse. Plus, he'll be the only one who "might" consider a discount.

He had no production for the first 10 games? You mean, 11 points in 10 games was no production?

Ok fine if he had 10pts to start the season. When the comments were made he was moving like parts of last year. He was reportedly doing some therapy of some sort and absolutely was slow.

Yes he is doing well now but that doesn't mean it will translate when he is 38 freaking years old let alone a fast paced playoff series. You guys just blindly support everything from massive overpays to Dubas Dubas Dubas, Keefe Keefe Keefe.

I have a joke for you... ok here goes. ..

So, the Toronto Maple Leafs sign another 35 year old to a large contract with term... That's the joke.

Killing me over here. Give him Knies money now! So we can have the next Kadri or Hyman shipped out. Reaves looks great too, why not bring Pronger back and Yzerman, hell maybe Shanny should hop on the ice.

Triggered.

Being able to look at things objectively, is a skill. Nobody here supports Dubas or Keefe blindy, or at all at this point for that matter. That's a complete creation of your own mind. Nobody wants Tavares at a large contract with term.... and if you actually read some of the thread or fourm, you'd notice that whether he's extended, and for what, depends on this years playoffs... but make no mistake about it, he's better than dumping him, and signing Grandlund or Gourde as replacements.

Nah not triggered. Just want to get off the bus on these old guys. They have been killing our cup dreams for 40 years now. MLSE hasn't known a 35 year has been or once was they didn't want to toss money at..

It's groundhog day

anything over $3M per longer term and I would pass ..
Ridiculous.
Gourde, Granlund, Dvorak and Bennett are your next best C's, that "might" get to UFA.
Might.

Ya, we can F*** all that from the gallery. If you can sign market value 8 Mil Tavares (Thanks Stamkos!), at anything with a 5 on it...?!?!? You sign that yesterday, today, tomorrow, before playoffs, during playoffs, after playoffs, whatever - all day.

Ya, but all due respect, you're dragging one decade into the next for 40 years. Can't do that. Look, we all have PTSD, so I get it. But if JT scoring the only 2 hat tricks we've had this year, alongside being the best player nad FO man on the team all season, is his current status..?!? Then by all means - sign JT to 6 years, to 100 years - it doesn't matter the term. All that's going to matter is the next 3 years for this team w the contract structure as is - so after that it's a full tear down, regardless.

This! The Leafs have to be very careful with the term and dollars if they resign him because he has only one direction to go... down.
Personally, I wouldn't resign him at all. I honestly don't see the point of giving him a retirement contract, no matter how cheap it may be (and obviously it won't be Jason Spezza cheap). At some point, it's okay to simply move on.

I agree, but it's not even a question of whether the Leafs will resign him. Whether it happens today or on July 1, it's a foregone conclusion.

It’s hard to imagine that Tavares and Marner not signing before the season ends. Put all the distractions behind them so everyone can focus on the playoffs

I would honestly be shocked if both of them are not resigned well before the end of the season. I think it will be no different than Nylander. We will all wake up on a random day in January or February and they will be resigned. The team won't let it get to the end of the season.

Pretty crappy team for 6th overall in the league, I guess.
and we still don’t know if they have the skill sets required to play playoff hockey. I doubt they do considering they can’t skate or pass the puck on the PP.

We will all find out in a few months. I think the Leafs have the benefit of a pretty mediocre Eastern conference this season.

Fun thread. It's nice to see Tavares shooting % rebound this year. He's been an important part of the team, and hopefully he extends at a level that allows us to build... I've maintained that's $3.5-5 million, though as a UFA he'd get more.

I knew the right motivation would work in a contract year.
