Goaltending again cost them another game with Forsberg allowing two weak goals. At some point they have to come to the conclusion that Forsberg is not an NHL goaltender & move on from him. They have to have key saves at key moments & he has let them down way too often. How many times do the Sens score only to allow a goal against almost immediately afterwards. This team hasn't had NHL goaltending since Anderson left & he wasn't that great at times either, they need to find a good consistent goalie.

Last night was goaltending. Other nights it’s our special teams, other nights it’s massive defensive breakdowns, it’s always something.

Let’s get the repairs started by replacing the coaching staff then fix the roster in the off season.

My guess is that unless Martin accepts an interim coaching position they will keep DJ until the new GM.

SS and MA have tolerated the season so far so I conclude that they intend to hire "top of the class" people and will not compromise. Until those people are available it is status quo. They don't seem to care about on-ice performance this year.

I doubt 'stability' is the reason they are delaying. They simply want who they want.

Maybe the situation becomes so intolerable they have to give in but I'll be surprised.

I do wonder how they plan to handle the draft and the trade deadline without a GM. Are all GM responsibilities on hold?

I remember hearing Staios say that they haven't conducted any interviews yet for the GM position.
do you remember Craig Button's tweet from the summer...declaring Staios as Ottawa's next GM.

Maybe, just maybe Button knew something

how?

you have seen the contracts. Their length, AAV and true salary as we move forward.

the movable contracts/players are the guys we don't want to move.

Well it's too bad our former gm liked to give term to goaltender who didn't deserve it

I think this is exactly what is happening. Good succinct post.

Not that tough really.

On the back end Chabot and Chychrun both have value so you trade 1 of them.

Brannstrom gets moved or you walk away.

Up front you move on from Tarasenko, Kubalik and replace them with harder physical players.

Thats the easy stuff, you also investigate the market on Norris, Pinto, Batherson, Joseph and see if there is a home run deal available.

Targets are a top 4 RD who can support Chabot/Chychrun and 2 middle 6 wingers who can forecheck, hit and play on the Pk.

Alfie interim coach please until new GM.

Of course Alfie's coaching experience is just peewee teams however he has been around a bench for long enough and his aura breeds accountability that i think he will give the team a short term bump.

We all want a better coach. However, I wouldn't risk putting Alfredsson in a position to fail and IMHO a short-term bump is meaningless (and not guaranteed).
Correcting player bad habits, on the other hand, is a meaningful goal.

Goaltending was an issue last night along with other issues. At one point, three Senators were behind the net honing in on the puck carrier with no one defending or guarding players in front of the net. They were watching the puck carrier a lot versus attending to their assignments. There's a lot that needs to be fixed.

I don't think they will have a choice but to hire the "top of the class" people to repair the rot that has set in with the on ice product that pretty much continues every game.

I agree there is a lot of work to be done. I'm optimistic though because the players are world class athletes and are young. They can play better individually and as a team.

It boils down to who these "top of the class" people are and when can the team hire them. They have made positive steps with A'son and JM to help player performance.

And the team has (serious) positional weaknesses, such as goaltending.

We need an acronym for "top of the class" :)

but its not a position to fail. its already a lost season. Alfie wants to be a coach this is real world experience for him, and there is a interim tag to say you are just filling in till we get the guy.

DJ Smith in The Athletic June 30"As the players get better, the mistakes have to be less and less....The accountability has to be higher. And it’s not just me, they are going hold themselves to a higher standard. If you’re not going, someone else has to take your spot.”

Bruins fan coming in peace.
Gotta think DJ has like 1-2 games left at this point eh?
3-7-0 in their last 10. How is this guy still behind the bench?
Cuz our captain is bff with DJ and staios is worried about Brady throwing another hissy-fit…that’s about the best guess I can come up with

We have losers leading the team
