Can't say no one is coming in temporarily when 2 teams have done just that in the past month
To be fair, the concern is about quality options coming in with the interim tag, are either of Hynes or Knoblauch in as interim coaches? I'm also unsure how coveted either guy was/is, neither was getting mentioned when people were dreaming about who would replace DJ.

When he was with the Oilers, Steve Staios became a fan of coach Jay Woodcroft, since fired by Edmonton. Should Staios and owner Michael Andlauer determine a coaching change is necessary with the Senators, don’t be surprised if Woodcroft is the choice to replace D.J. Smith …

For sure but we know the current option isnt working or viable

At this stage try someone new based off who we can get and either we get pleasantly surprised or the new gm makes a decision in the offseason

This will also help evaluate players because it takes away the variable of only playing for 1 coach

The rope DJ has goes like this:

-lose three games in a row where the team largely looks awful and doesn't understand how to PK or defend: Rope remains the same length

-Win one game against a bottom dweller at home: Rope is extended by a mile

-Rince and repeat until team is out of the playoffs by January

9th in the league in xGA / 60. All strengths. All scores. 2.96 / game

23rd in the league in xGA / 60 when leading. All strengths. 3.44 / game.

Stats point to a solid defensive team that is young and nervous and still struggling with the pressure of winning. Need to learn to lock games down. Need more situational awareness

It's interesting how narratives set in on this site. We're bad defensively. No structure. Can't break out. I think that's an oft repeated few phrases. Coach should be fired because of all that.

Another thing we hear often is needing more of an advanced stats department

Advanced stats say we should be giving up the 9th least goals in the league. In a 32 team league, would that be considered a "top" defensive team?

Would an advanced stat guru criticize or support the coaching staff?

So, 5v5 we are 24th, PK 16th, where we make hay is being 7th in xGA on the PP, being 1st in PP TOI, while being on the PK significantly less at 24th,

Basically our all situations xGA is significantly impacted by the special teams gap, we draw lots of penalties and don't take alot.

We also seem to do well 3v3 and 4v4 as our ES xGA is middle of the pack.

5v5 23/24 Natural Stattrick
CA/60 12th from the bottom
SA/60 8th from the bottom
SCA/60 7th from the bottom
HDCA/60 10th from the bottom
XGA/60 8th from the bottom

All of these together paint a picture that we are close to the bottom 1/4 of the league in allowing possession, shot attempts, shots and scoring chances
I would not call us a defensive juggernaut just yet .. I think if you watch good teams vs the Sens the way they break the puck out with control is noticeable and improving in that area will translate to more offense.

Probably both.

Advanced stats are an interesting tool...but you also have to take them with a grain of salt. I think cold numbers on a page don't necessarily give all the info. Giving up a goal in the first or last minute of a period puts a team at a greater disadvantage than in the middle of a period. Also giving up a goal and having a defensive breaking down within a minute or two of scoring a goal also plays mental games on the players. Stuff like that doesn't translate too well on paper. The defensive breakdowns we give up tend to be devastating. Like, a forensics paper may say "one gunshot wound"...but there's a big difference between getting shot in the foot versus shot in the chest.

Don't know enough about how much Edmonton's record the past two seasons had to do with Woodcroft and how much it had to do with having the best two forwards in the world, but could we please look at an experienced head coach for once?

Have to go back to Craig Hartsburg to find a coach this team hired that had more than a couple years worth of head coaching experience.

Natural stat trick says we're 14th at even strength. That's well into the upper half.

You can point to gaps that cause anomalies, but does any of that matter? It's a fluid game that sees different numbers of players on the ice throughout the game.

You're more a believer in some advanced stats than me. If looking at xGA, and we're 9th, is that what's causing us problems?

I think it does if you're intent is to combat a narrative that we are disorganized defensively. 5v5 the adv stats line up pretty well with what people complain about. It also matters of you're looking to identify what the issues are in need of being addressed.

Can’t like this post enough.

Why can’t we for once get an NHL coach who’s had success in the playoffs?

I’m tired of the “up and comers”

Our last head coach had 1000+ games coached in the NHL and even won a Stanley Cup.
