Should have been fired the moment we signed Giroux like I said
I'd have gone with a new voice to start last season, but I didn't mind giving DJ a chance with a roster that had a legit chance. Injuries, and our D group, meant that any coach was likely going to have a hard time getting us into the playoffs, so we're essentially in the same situation as last year, do we go with the new voice right away, or do we give DJ one last shot now that we should have a roster capable of making the show.

With new ownership coming so late in the offseason, I think we end up giving him another shot, then an interim coach to finish the season (assuming he doesn't last) and a search for the next voice once the options open back up with other teams moving on from established guys.

Probably too late to replace him so he’ll get more time. Unless Andlauer has already someone in his mind outside the box.

It's a results based league, but it's also a "players input" based league.

We've seen all kinds of guys get fired because of bad results but we've also seen some guys get canned based on player input. Usually Post season exit interview input.

In our case, seems the players want DJ. You'd think he'd of been terminated at season's end if the players were indifferent towards him.

DJ is very much a players coach. Seems pretty likeable and someone you’d try your best for

The problem isn’t that though. It’s the lack of X’s and O’s, systems and defensive play.

He’s just not an intelligent coach with good systems . He’s not a guy who you win with or go deep into the playoffs with

He was a good coach to have with the young guys getting their feet wet and being motivating and positive but it’s now time for a real NHL coach and not a junior one

DJ said he's going to start coaching the team differently now that it's about winning and not about development.

Last time that happened in Ottawa the coach lasted 27 games and the GM lamented the change with his "new Paul" comments. That guy then went on to a successful career as an assistant but hasn't really sniffed a HC job again.

I don't wish that on DJ, but I wouldn't be particularly shocked if that's exactly what happened. Seems like a nice enough guy to bounce around the league and get more gigs but I'm not sure there's a team willing to hand him the keys as HC anytime soon. Lucky for him he'll get another shot at it with a talented roster so maybe he'll give himself another kick at the can here in Ottawa.

He will use all the good stuff he learned from Babs

Did he actually say this

Behind the Athletic paywall, but straight from the horses mouth.

“When I took this job, my job was to develop these kids. And with that comes losses. If Timmy makes a mistake, you have to keep playing him. And that’s part of it,” Smith explained. “Now as a coach, I will coach them differently. There is a different mindset when you’re developing and rebuilding. And there is a different mindset when you believe you can win every night. That’s the exciting part for me and our staff. These players. I think they feel they have a chance to win every night now.”

“The biggest thing is details. It has to be tightened up. The accountability towards small details becomes tighter and tighter as you want to get better. As the players get better, the mistakes have to be less and less. They know better. And the accountability has to be higher,” Smith says. “And it’s not just me, they are going hold themselves to a higher standard. They know where they want to go. Just letting guys play throughout it is not something you have with a team that expects to win. If you’re not going, someone else has to take your spot.”

Sometimes we want the coach fired cause he wont play the young kids. As soon as they make a mistake we claim, he benches them and they never learn.

Other times the coach is teaching them, giving them reps when they make mistakes assuming its not because they need to be shamed and chastised into better play. And then there’s anger that he wont hold them accountable. Tough job being a coach 😊

And while on the one hand it feels like we are owed a good start after the last few years. On the other hand we haven’t proved we deserve to be held to that standard yet. By all rights this team is newly coming together still in many ways and it might rightly take them a while to find their sea legs. I don’t feel right demanding that until they have established it. But on the 3rd hand I expect better. So 3 hands not good. Anxiously awaiting training camp to see how things are developing.

DJs “system” will need tweaking in many areas if he’s going to get the best out of the Team. Not just certain individuals.

Lol, I’ll just roll with the next guys and see what happens as usual.

You’ll get a new pitchfork sharpened undoubtably… ;)

Rinse and repeat. :)

Might be better to ask who loses their job first, Dorion or DJ.

Assuming he doesn't do something earlier, I doubt if Andlauer will wait very long to get rid of DJ if the Senators get off to another slow start.

It's only the short sighted Dorion & DJ "lovers" that will have any angst over this. They'd probably back any authority figure though.

It seems that you’re advocating for the new owner, to be a meddling owner. It’s up to the GM whether or not the head coach is fired during the season, or at anytime.

Why would you want an owner to “call the shots” rather than an owner to allow his hockey management personal, manage the hockey operation?

Haven’t we already had enough of a meddling owner? For almost a decade many had been calling for the previous owner to butt out of hockey operations and hire someone more knowledgeable to be the POHO and let them manage the franchise.

The new owner has every right to operated the franchise as they see fit, and going by his track record, with hockey teams he has been involved with, I doubt he will be the type of owner who will fire the coach…. He will instruct whomever directly answers to him, to carry out his wishes, and the wishes will be communicated in the normal way down the chain of command and if the changes he was looking for are not carried out, the the coach and GM could both be gone.

If you gave out free ice cream to a room full of people there would be people who would still complain that it's chocolate and not strawberry. That's just human nature, there will never be 100% satisfaction.

Just like how some people perpetually complain, the people who constantly complain about the complainers are just as exhausting.... just saying.

When was the last time we actually had a decent coach? Bryan Murray?

There’s a reason all our fired coaches weren’t hired elsewhere afterwards

This is a franchise that has had very little change. Basically none under Melnyk. They haven't looked outside the organization to hire a GM in 20 years. 20 YEARS!

In that time we've only had 2 internal promotions, one of which happened only because Murray passed away and his trainee took over. We've basically had the same management philosophy running the team since Melnyk fired the guy he inherited from Bryden.

There's being ridiculous and cheering for people to be fired, hence your comments, and then there's simply wanting a new philosophical approach to building a team in 20 years. Lets not conflate the two.

Do you have a list of potential replacements for the current GM, that you think the new ownership group should choose from?
