I can't watch anymore DJ coached games. He's a f***ing clown. Maybe he's a great guy but so are lots of people. Doesn't mean they have any business behind an NHL bench.
Some of the private/proprietary data paints a different picture. Mike Kelly was on Shawn Simpson's podcast a few days ago and he says that the Sens grade out pretty strong defensively using SportLogiq's numbers. That's the company the Sens hired Sean Tierney from, so if he's using the same data set he's probably telling DJ that things are getting better.
sportLogiq also uses arguably a better data collection means, they aren't using the NHL real time data which has issues with rink bias, but rather AI reviewing the video.
I suspect the quality of the sportLogiq stuff is better, but who knows, since they are transparent the way the open source stuff tends to be.
Agreed. A win in the next game could result in us leap frogging two teams reducing the total number of teams that need to be leap frogged. One game at a time, but they do need to string wins together now and in the near future.
Probably not, they had 3 consecutive 1st OA picks to help get them that rep.Ok. We’re a little better. Our rep willl be the same tho.
Sure but it didn't, doing so in the middle of the season is by definition reactive, it is what it is.
You're looking at this at a fan perspective, which I don't blame you. A coaching change also doesn't mean we automatically play well. What happens if we play worse? Your players get alienated and the locker room goes to shit.
Who are you going to hire this offseason? There's not much pickings out there. Are you going to hire a GM first? Are you going to go with an interim coach? You're definitely not going to have a full hiring process. Who's going to come in knowing they'll probably be fired in the offseason? What if your interim coach does well? Do you keep him at the end of the season considering you haven't run a full hiring process? Do you keep him knowing it might've been a fluke? That's not considering the fact that you still have to bring in a GM. Will he want his own coach? etc. etc.
Management side of things it's 100x more messy firing DJ at this point. Considering that implementing a new system in the middle of the season is pretty much impossible, the gamble that this team will do much better rather than worse is probably worth the millions spent in breaking contracts, hiring someone, and then breaking their contract again this offseason.
Andlauer just spent half a billy. If he thinks that this season can crash and burn if it means running a proper process and having a better chance of hiring the right GM/coach in the offseason, he's not even going to blink.
The argument here isn't that DJ isn't bad or needs to go, but firing him now is another gamble during a season where we already got players suspended, a GM fired, the team captain calling out fans, and where we lost a pick. I would love for DJ to be fired, but this is just the reality from managements point of view.
From the business perspective, they have a fan base that's lost interest over the past 5 years of complete ineptitude. You need to show your fans that you aren't going to continue on a very well travelled but shitty path.Sure but it didn't, doing so in the middle of the season is by definition reactive, it is what it is.

Yeah they absolutely need to string 4 or 5 together at this point.
Theyre not out of it yet, but if they don't put together a streak soon they will be.
Too much rope apparently. I'm not a Sens fan but it upsets me that DJ is still coaching your team. So much potential with this group and they're just spinning their wheels with a moron coach.
Look at their upcoming schedule now think about how they are playing. They are done.
They're play has been regressing for 12 straight games. They never have the puck anymore. They got a taste of an actual good team this week. We all saw how that went. They're about to play a bunch of teams as good or better here on the road with no rest. The moment this team has excuses they jump on it. Loser mentality.Probably. But you never know. I've seen Sens reams looking worse off statistically than they do now and turn it around.
It's been a while tho lol
I agree with your two points for sure, and hope that DJ isn’t doing more harm overall. I also agree and should have clarified that the position is key rather than DJ at this point. You make a lot of good points. In general I agree. Getting the coach and GM right is vital (as is the scouting component).
I'm not impatient, although I can see how I sound that way. Rather, I fear DJ is doing more harm than good.
The question (I can't answer) is, "Do you do more harm to the team long term by keeping DJ or by replacing him now?".
Two small comments on your position.
1. I wouldn't call DJ a key component (although the position of coach with staff is).
2. If Staios is too green to hire a coach let's hope he is not too green to evaluate and hire the GM.
I don’t think any fan is arguing in favour of it, but it simply isn’t our decision to make. So what now?Firing DJ has zero to do with being reactive. It's something that needed to get done long ago. Just because he just took over as owner doesn't mean he should let things go to shit for another season, knowing the fanbase has already suffered for the last 3 years watching this team go exactly nowhere.
Only on HF do I see people arguing in favor of wasting another season.
virtually certain!Look at their upcoming schedule now think about how they are playing. They are done.
Hiring Dorion and keeping him so long was a major contributor to the lack of performance of the team. Melnyk as owner is too. Coaching staff too.Too much rope apparently. I'm not a Sens fan but it upsets me that DJ is still coaching your team. So much potential with this group and they're just spinning their wheels with a moron coach.
Solid regular season records, his teams play with structure, and he generally gets a lot more from his team than what's on paper. Everything there is pretty much the exact opposite of DJ Smith. Why would Evason be solid and the coach we need? Make your best case for this guy:
- experience?
- succeses?
- other factors?
DJ "I like being 8-9" Smith really doesn't want to break up Kubalik-Chartier-Tarasenko. Still together at practice.
I just don't like having Kubalik and Tarasenko on the same line. They each need someone else to drive the play.Chartier is a placeholder until Grieg is back, but I agree should have kept Tarasenko with Joseph at least.
Kubalik is a slightly better Chiasson
