NHL Rumour Roundup: Will Canadian buyers be at a trade disadvantage?

In light of Justin Faulk's recent comments RE: playing in Canada, there seems to be a lot of chatter in the industry about guys not wanting to be traded to a Canadian team. Now, this has been somewhat of an issue for Canadian teams in the past too (higher taxes, colder, less to do, etc.), however it seems that harsher COVID restrictions have lead to even more guys not wanting to play in Canada.

What do you think? Is this going to be a major issue for Canadian teams at the TDL? If so, which of the 7 teams do you think will be most affected?

His comments were specific to Covid restrictions, that’s what it’s all about, this is why Canadian don’t even want to be here. I mean, who would.

The other things you mentioned aren’t even true, they’re opinions that get passed off as fact which have mostly been disproven and haven’t been a factor pre-pandemic, so it’s pointless to introduce them to the equation now.

But specific to the restrictions, yes, nobody wants to have to deal with them. But I doubt anyone will have to overpay, teams will just sign depth players to fill out their rosters. Most of the 7 teams have their cores set anyway, and the others are rebuilding.

I live in Canada. I went to Scottsdale in December. Everything was open and almost no one was wearing a mask.

I very much preferred it to what we have here. Judging by the lack of people wearing masks, the overwhelming majority of inhabitants and visitors preferred it too.

I think COVID rules will make it harder for Canadian teams to get players. It's likely secondary to other main factors though.

Eventually Canada will take the US approach. We can't eradicate the virus and don't want to go on like this forever so there's really no choice. Personally I wish we'd just get on with it.

I mean taxes and weather have been mentioned before, by multiple sources. The NHLPA has their survey. Using COVID restrictions is a cop out.

But at the end of the day, 29 years without a cup says everything.

Hi guys,

with all what happening in Canada with those restrictions, a lot of player clearly mentionned not wanting to go to go play for a canadian team, even some wife of players are starting to voice their displeasure...

So how much they will have to overpay if they want to get any interess from the players if there is any?

Keep the conversation civilize as most as possible
Hard to say what the restriction situation will be in the summer.

And, there's lots of factors that go into a player's selection of a destination. Doubt if it would ever get to a point that there would be no interest for all players to play for a Canadian team.

Can't imagine that politics won't play a part in this discussion.

Honestly, Canadian teams have never really seemed to actually have an issue with signing the big name free agents? They almost never work out, but that is the nature of free agency for most teams.

At the end of the day money and term talk. Canadian teams have never had any issue with spending their money in free agency. I doubt that will change going forward.

And considering masks do very little and that wearing them is far more uncomfortable than COVID itself I have to agree with you

Finland had quite hard restrictions and tomorrow they'll start removing them. Probably all, step-by-step.

Just face the omicron like another flu. That's the reality.

I'm gonna live normal life from now on. Have had 3 different vaccinations for a while etc.
