Goaltending was bad to start. Stamkos, Marchessault, Forsberg and Nyquist couldn’t score. Josi forgot how to play defense.

I spent the entire fall working in Nashville and went to several games. ROR and Schenn passed the eye test.

Nope. Put him in the trebuchet. Trade him and futures for a 2nd/3rd line tweener that’s a net positive defensive forward. The kind of guy that’s good for 15-20 goals and can PK.
I'm not convinced that I trust your eye test...

Like Crouse? I remember lots of folks clamoring for Crouse around these parts. (Ps don't look at his performance this season if you want to maintain said illusion).

Crouse is playing like someone who wants to get out of a floundering franchise. He needs to go to a playoff team that needs a top 6 piano puller. Before Kasper was out on the top line Crouse would have fit. Now? We’ve got MBN who I think will at worst be Crouse.

Crouse would do well in a team like LA, NYI, NJD, BOS, maybe CGY. He’s gotta get out of Utah though.

I was opposed to Cozens, but given a number of things right now, this might be worth taking a swing my mind now. Specifically, the forecasted cap increase, and the position where the Wings are now in the standings and the breakout of Kasper.

I'm kind of hoping we pull the trigger and run him as our 2C with Cat and Kane, or if that doesn't work all that well (can't imagine it would be worse than Copp) and move him up to Kaspers spot on the 1st and have him play with with his shot, and drop Kasper back into a C position.

23yo talented, big bodied, C's don't come around all that often and his price is pretty depressed at this point. But I think this is a situation where you could put together a Rasmussen, Wallinder + 1st to give them something new to work with
He’s not worth that on his current contract. He’s trending for less than 40 points this season, injuries are piling up, and he plays a low IQ game. Projects more as a winger even though his faceoff percentage has gone up this year. He could be a good reclamation project but not someone worth giving up significant assets for. People are saying he’s having trouble going to the middle and near the slot, not playing anywhere like his 70 point season. He’s been playing a lot on the perimeter. This is a player and contract that very well could be an albatross and it’s got 5 more years.

Normally, I would agree with you. I think that's kind of the reasons I was saying here that I think he's worth the chance at the rough level of value I laid out (Rasmussen, B-Level Prospect, 1st 2025).

At 7.1M over the next five seasons and the rising cap (approx. 95M next year, up to 113M). That puts him next year 7.4% of cap (a little high), and later by the end of his deal around 6.5% of the cap. If you were to make a comparable UFA signing at those numbers, if we were to 'buy' a guy at the lower cap numbers (81, 82, 83, 85, 88) etc. - you end up with a low end and high end range as percentage Palat, Killhorn, Bertuzzi, etc. - that tier of player that's out there. So, the 'opportunity cost' of using that money somewhere else, I don't think there is a ton of awesome players out there in a FA situation who I would be excited to spend 6-7% of our effective cap on (not including D at this point, but I don't see that as our point).

So the rising cap kind of reframes the risk here for me. That in the worse case, he's basically Andrew Copp at his deal, a half ppg C/W. The upside here is - he's 23yo, has a great frame, excellent skating, has potted 30g already in his young career. So we can definitely say he has the talent to be an impact player. So its either a health issue (like you suggested), a mental issue (maybe) or a situational issue (it's BUF).

So say he's at his absolute bottom, I'm basically eating an avg. 6.5% contract over it's lifetime for a half ppg, 23yo, 6'3 200+ C/W (which after two years would probably still have trade value). Absolute peak upside? - I'm looking at a 70pt Top Six C who on a crazy good deal in his prime. Middle line scenario? Top six scoring winger with size whose good for 50+ at a reasonable contract. I don't think it's without risk, I agree with the hesitancy and why i wasn't into this idea before. But with the cap news, and having Kasper breakout, the downside risk seems manageable. And honestly if he was living up to his deal, he wouldn't be available so this is kind of the trade risk you need to take to get a 23yo potentially high value Center.

Oh, one another thing about this down year; Cozens has been used really oddly. He played wing to with McLeod at C and Greenway on the other side which is a super mid line. Like if we put him on the wing of Rasmussen and Compher at C. They tried to get him going again by going back to the old lineup of Quinn and Peterka and they trio ended up doing quite well in terms of points (Cozens 13pts in 21 games), and then they broke it up and started moving him around and up down the lineup again with all sorts of randoms.

To point being, yeah, it's a down year, but I don't think the brain trust in BUF is using him well either and are just trying to get anything going there. What does Cozens look like if you paired him with a true sniper like Debrincat that he can cross to... or even Kasper who can bang around the crease. Having some structure, consistent linemates, and better coaching could go a long way for him

.3 seconds slower than McDavid.
Didnt know that , even better

Didn't realize Buch had those kind of jets. Need to get him over here this offseason, I know his contract situation, but others have gotten around that situation, let's do it for Dmitri.
Would be nice but I dont think itll happen, when's the last time a khl player left a contract???

We'd have buchelnikov danielson mazur going for spots. I'd have np throwing mazur in a deal for an important player but even if we dont we'd have to subtract veleno, compher, tarasenko etc..

No point bringing these kids for 4th line duty

Michkov?

Connor Murphy from Chicago ain't all that bad. Someone mentioned Jan Rutta from SJ. Maybe Schenn from Nashville, although I hear he kinda sucks.

Trouba half retained?
I’ve heard terrible things about Murphy this year. Granted, being a defensive defenseman on a bad rebuilding team has to be the hardest job short of being a goaltender for a bad team, but Murphy is also around the age where a permanent drop-off could be happening. I like the idea of Rutta though.
