How do you improve the Wings?

I know he has played good recently but are we really sure Johansson shouldn’t be used as a potential asset in a trade? I really think we gotta go and get another top 4 guy.

I’ll have to plead ignorance regarding Johansson since I haven’t watched many Red Wings games as of late (due to the NHL Network and working weekends), but from what I have seen he seems to look pretty comfortable playing on the right side of Ed…Being that he’s also a player that the Wings drafted gives a sense of satisfaction with the direction this team is headed.

I would rather spend a bit more draft capital than trade away guys we've spent years developing to get to this point.

Depends on the player coming back our way.

I'm not too interested in making minor moves. Red Wings have a lot of prospects knocking on the door, basically all of them aren't 1st line potential, so that sets up what you really target imo in UFA or trades.

Need to make trades/future signings for a top two C, and a top 4 LHD.(imo)

I'd move him in the right deal. Bet it would be after the season, though, where someone has a guy looking at a raise they can't afford and wouldn't mind a cost controlled (if slightly downgraded) replacement.

Everyone playing better now puts us in a much better position to go after trades, though. They keep playing well and everyone will have better trade value.

There have been rumors of Wings targeting Cozens, last heard about it on the newest Spittin Chiclets pod dropped like 12hours ago or something. Do you guys they should do it? And be realistic with the returns too.

IMO he is not the one to target, he is like a dollar store version of Larkin and has a 7m AAV. Younger sure, but on pace for 40points. Also imo Compher and/or Copp can do whatever he does, he will never be some high scoring center.

Hmm, Dylan Cozens looks like Dylan Stome, who had career 0.62 points per game until 24 year old.

Then moved to Capitals and have been potting 0.86 points per game in last 3 years.

Cozens is 23-year old and have been putting career 0.58 points per game. Think he has the potential to make the "strome" jump.

Buffalo wants too much for him.

With the cap jumping up $.4M I am hoping the Wings can dump at least 1 contract at the deadline.

Call it addition by subtraction and then addition. DO BETTER in signing UFAs or abandon what has been a disaster and just just seeding the line up with the prospects.

Trade

Copp - Longest deal

Tarasenko - Someone may take a flyer on the guy for a post season run and he only has 1 year left on this deal.

Buy out

Holl - No one is taking this guy.

Player replacement -
MBN for Tarasenko and Kasper for Copp.

Petry and Holl gone.

They will try Wallinder on D but they MUST sign a legit anchor for the 2nd pairing. (I wuld say one other D but they won't retool this dramatically). Get Simon on the line with Mo. They work well together. I don't see AJo making it but he has a bit of rope left.

Mo-Simon
UFA- Chiarot
Gustaf-AJo
Wallinder

I will walk the plank on a trade. Buium and a #2 for Trouba.

Not enough talent to win, team was trying and that was very important. I am not familiar with other teams and don't know who could be available , but I believe if it possible of course get guy like Josi will be big improvement for team and for our European defense to learn from. What would it cost to get 34 year old defansman 2025 first, top 10 protected, plus Rasmussen?

Here's how you build a contender:

Structure the Team

  • Top Six Forwards: 2 elite players, 4 solid contributors.
  • Bottom Six Forwards: Focus on defensive reliability, penalty killing, and cheap contracts.
  • Top Four Defensemen: At least one elite two-way defenseman and two reliable shutdown defenders.
  • Third-Pair Defensemen: Affordable, defensively solid players.
  • Goaltending: 1 top-tier starter, 1 affordable backup.
You can decide what we have, what we need. I personally consider Larkin an elite forward since he is NOT a contributor; he's a line driver. Raymond = elite.

Contributors:
  • Kane
  • Debrincat
That's it! Only 2.

Bottom six = everyone else including Kasper (for now).

TWO really good top dmen; Seider, Edvinsson. The rest are 3rd pairing at best.
Goalies = good enough placeholders for where we are at.

Adding to the future:
  • *ASP
  • *Cossa/Augustine

  • MBN
  • Buch
  • Danielsson
  • Kiiskinen
  • +/- everyone else
( * possible elite)

So in my mind DRWs have the major pieces to become contenders in a few years. Yzerman and pro scouts will need to do a better job, and Yzerman will need to replace bad contracts with good contracts.

Most definitely not. This way you mention you build a strong above average bubble team.

Here's how you build a contender:

Structure the Team

  • Top Six Forwards: 4 elite players, 2 solid role players.
  • Top Nine Forwards: 3 solid top 9 forwards who can move up the lineup if necessary to be role players and who contribute offensively from the 3rd line position vs. other teams 2nd-3rd-4th lines or play opponents top line and not necessarily shut it down, but limit its production.
  • Bottom Six Forwards/4th line: Focus on defensive reliability, penalty killing, and cheap contracts.
  • Top Four Defensemen: At least two elite two-way defenseman and one reliable shutdown defenders as well as one offensive defenseman.
  • Third-Pair Defensemen: Affordable, defensively solid players where if needed one play as 4th d-man if your offensive defenseman isn't as solid and need to play bottom pair + Power Play.
  • Goaltending: 1 top-tier starter, 1 affordable backup.
  • Minimum 8 top heavy players (4 forwards - 3 defensemen - 1 goalie) who run the team, preferably up towards 12-13 guys total who are among the upper half of the league in their roles (meaning another 3 forwards and 1 defenseman). Preferable one of the better backups for good caphit.

Can I ask what your definition of "elite" is? Based on my definition, I don't think a team exists with 4 elite forwards and 2 elite D-men so I image our definitions are different.
