How can the World Championship improve as an event?

It probably has more to do with how the tournament is organized, than any geographic location.

Yeah, I wrote that badly.

I'm wondering if the tournament gets no attention by the media, or just the fans don't care. I would hardly believe that you wouldn't watch the tournament if it was on your TV. If not, and it would be because of NHL referees there, and the NHL helding the tournament, then ok.

And if we are talking about the whole country attention (in Finland, Sweden, Russia...) I suppose that's also their responsibility to care about the tournament, or does the NHL have to pay them for that??

The Vancouver olympics got the big attention in Europe because it's the olympics. It has nothing to do with if the tournament was helded by the NHL or not, imo.

It's because it's an unofficial tournament, kind of like the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

That would be like me saying Canadians don't care about the WHC because it's rarely if ever hosted in Canada. Canada's hosted it once in the past 100 years or so. It's pathetic. The World Cup of hockey is a better indicator of who the best nations are because each country brings their best players just like the Olympics. When you host a tournament in the middle of the NHL playoffs it takes away any type of credibility towards what the main goal of the tournament is..(to award a country as world champion) if you don't have the best players from every country playing in it, then it's a 2nd tier tournament in my view.

To answer the question from the OP, to gain more viewership and more credibility if I were the IIHF, I'd have a tournament every 2-3 years in between intervals with the Olympics. Have the tournament in late August/September before training camps and the NHL season start so that you get the best of the best.

I have no idea why Canadians don't care more about the World Championships. I love it. I look forward to seeing who will go and seeing some great talent play together. I watch every Canada game and all medal matches even if Canada is not in.

Hopefully with TSN losing the NHL rights they will pump up the Worlds even more and get people excited about it. I'm already looking at the NHL standings and wondering who might play for Canada...

That doesn't add up.

If the world cup was held at regular intervals instead of random times, held in both Europe and North America, and featured neutral refereeing for each game, would it be more relevant to fans outside North America?

Probably. But it would still take many years for it to become a truly meaningful tournament. But if the NHL gives it time and does all that, I could see people caring about it after some years.

Move it to just after Christmas, shrink it to 10 teams and only let U20 players play and it'll be huge

I struggle to see what does that have to do with the fact that the World Cup is an unsanctioned event.

Regarding the host country of the World Championship, every national federation is free to bid for the tournament. The one time a North American federation (Canada) has done so recently (2008), they won the bid.

The profit from the World Championships is used to grow the game globally and to fund all the other division championships as well as all the junior championships. The profit from the World Cup will probably go to NHL (not sure about this but I'd think so). This is my main problem with the World Cup besides the ridiculous non-national teams. I will definitely watch the tournament because I love international hockey but don't value the tournament as anything special.

Some North Americans don't seem to understand just how important the WHC is for hockey. Hockey is a small and expensive game globally and IIHF doesn't have the money like FIFA.

Here's an idea

If you want to qualify for the Olympic team, you have to participate in either the NHL playoffs or the WHC at least twice in the 4 year period between Olympic games.

That would guarantee, I would think, participation in the WHC, as players vie for a spot on the Olympic team. Of course, with the NHL looking like they are done participating, this is all moot.

That doesn't add up.

Actually it does. NHL hasn't started up and with best on best which is never the case as the format stands now then people will be more interested. It's even less credible when the "World Championship" is held a few months after the Olympics LOL just mind boggling stupid. The tournament needs to separate itself from 2 things (Olympics, and NHL playoffs) Have it in August-September where you will have most talent available.

It will be huge in Canada, and hardly anyone else will care about inferior u20 players.

Roughly 80% of the players at the WC are inferior to NHLers, so if talent level is so important why would an NHL fan have any interest in that tournament?

What's wrong with WCH? Last year the attendance record was broken and it is expected Czechs will take it back again in 2015.

Majority of people here do not follow NHL playoffs and consider WCH much more important. Sure, true hockey fans follow NHL but WCH gets here about 10 times more attention from media and people. Quality of play is higher in NHL playoffs but almost no one cares about Gaborik scoring a winning goal in finals, while entire nation know Slovakia beat France in WCH preliminary group.

And as already has been written, WCH are too profitable to be held just once in 2 or 4 years. The profit is used to fund hockey growth globally.

We could consider moving it to September. Actually, I like the idea.

Not sure I do. I would like to give it a try, but I have my doubts that the tournament would improve much.
The players would not really be in their best shape yet (not that they are at the end of the season either), their teams particular the NHL teams might have issues with letting them go because an injury at that time could have a huge impact on the upcoming season.
No matter when you hold the tournament there will always be a downside.

Funny how Canada, a team consisting entirely of NHL players hasn't made it past the quarterfinals for five years if they're so superior.
