How Big is our "Window"?

One step at a time I guess. This years re-alignment of the Divisions produces a nice opportunity.

If you draft well and make smart moves your window doesnt seem to close until your stars approach mid 30s. Obviously theres some up and downs in this trajectory, teams take steps back and probably miss playoffs or get bounced in the 1st a few times. I know 100% you build around Matthews/Marner long term, the rest of the team will come and go but you make it work.

Leafs window is definitely wide open this year thanks to the pandemic and re-alignment and limited teams to beat.

Leafs only need to beat 8 teams to win the Cup.

Never going to get better odds than that when it comes to Leafs competitive window.

More or less a decade.

I got to say though, the move may be trading Nylander although it seemed like a given during his negotiations and then an absolute no for this current contract. He provides us a luxury that I don’t think we can fully harness and it may be beneficial to make adjustments to the Tavares line and ultimately the overall team cap.

Plus he should be seen as a valuable commodity and we would retain value elsewhere (draft picks, prospects, etc.)

Our contending window is guaranteed 4 seasons including this one with our core forwards and two legitimate top pairing defensemen signed to contracts and on the roster to compete.

After that it's up in the air really on how Dubas (or whoever I suppose) goes about replacing the contributions of guys like Tavares, Muzzin, and Brodie, and if he's able to retain Matthews, Nylander, and Marner. Coming up the prospect pipeline though we do have promising players who if handled correctly can ensure our contending window goes beyond these four years, again assuming the franchise can retain the Big Three.

Our window is open until the end of Matthews current deal (2023-24). At that point Auston will have the ability to leave the club, and we will be forced to shift gears. Also this is when most of our "next wave" core will be exiting their ELC deals. Which will force our hand on how we go forward. If Amirov, Robertson, Lilly, and Sandin all progress the way we think they will, we will not be able to afford all of them with AM34/Mitch/JT/Willy. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the Leafs will do whatever they can to extend AM34, but the choice is completely his. If he resigns, I think it stays open for another 2-4 years after. Very similar to Washington. But its up to him, it is his right to test out UFA.

When the 2nd wave of kids gets too expensive, you trade them for more good picks and prospects.

it's open now , if JT's play continues to slide it may close for a few years until his 11m is off the books and then re open if Mathews re ups

Compare Tavares to the 2nd line Cs on the teams you are super scared of.

Note that aside from our current top-4 'A' prospects, all the prospects listed there are on the 4th line / 3rd pair / backup goalie - i.e slots that can be filled with cheap vets if need be.

Other teams have overpaid players too.
damn , you gave up defending him in record time and instead are shifting the goal posts to saying everyone has overpaid players , lol

but considering how people were and are still losing there shit because Lou overpaid Zeitsev by about 1-1,5m per i wonder how bad it'll get when they realize Johnny PJ's is already overpaid by 4-5 m and it'll only get worse the next 4 yrs . lol

I have always expected Tavares to be over paid in his latter years.

And so did Dubas.

And yet, he's still better than the 2Cs on the teams that make you poop your pants.
