anyone who says they feel the same as 2 weeks ago is clearly lying to themselves. We beat 2 of the best teams in the NHL and are on a 5 game heater. They've largely played better than the opposition in every game during that stretch.
I wrote after the Leafs got spanked by Pitt 2 weeks ago: "This type of skid in February gains a fraction of the attention. But on the heels of an embarrassing post season there is understandably much more concern. I completely understand everyone's frustrations, I feel it too. I just think we need to take a deep breath for a second here. Realistically it has only been 2 bad games from this group, on B2B nights. Not making excuses at all, they need to be better, but the damage done in the last 3 games can easily be erased by going 7-2-1 in their next 10 games."
They followed that up by losing to Carolina where they got completely outclassed in every aspect of the game, before going on this impressive 5 game streak. As much as I'd like to say all is well in Leaf land, we know exactly what happens with this group when they get too comfortable. As much as what I wrote 2 weeks ago appears to be trending as accurate, this group needs to remember that they are a 3 game losing streak away from that same level of chaos from 2 weeks prior. Absolutely no time to take the foot off the gas. We won some tough games against some good teams, now we need to win the games we should. We have 4 games this week (LAK, PHI, CAL, BUF). We need to set the expectation that 6pts is the absolute expectation from this set. You have to take the LAK and BUF games, and you want to win at least 1 of the 2 games between PHI and CAL. This is the type of stretch that can make this team really feel good about themselves, or bring back that old narrative that we've come to understand all too well. As impressive as this 5 game streak has been, it can all be erased with a bad stretch of games this week.
Historically, this group tends to let us down when they start feeling good about themselves. Lets just hope that's not the case this time around. Can't lose focus for a second in the NHL. There are no tap-in games.
