My point is that it doesn't make sense that we are a tier below many of those other teams, when we have the same question marks as a good amount of them and arguably a more talented tandem. If anything we should be in the same tier.So investigate for tie breakers.
Murray you have to pay to get rid of.
Samsonov has a history of being a head case with his former team.
They ranked us fine. If you know it's a gamble then who cares about ranks. You need the gamble to prove itself
When one compares Swayman

When you compare these 3 goalies on SV% and GA/G this past season the results are not close.
If you like Goalies based on "Goals saved above expected" results.

Then those are not close also.
Agreed Leaf Nation fans are banking on upside but the starting points of that are very different, if you see these 3 as comparable players. If the Leafs entered this year with Swayman or Husso in net based on last years performance the expectations would be very different. IMO.
Exactly. I dont care what the stats say. They don't always tell the whole story. Players have bad seasons and bounce backs all the time. People thought Giroux was close to being done because he had a 58 pt season and then turned around to have 102 and 85 pt seasons the following years. Same goes for injuries. People thought Crosby would be a concussion away from being done and went on to have a long career. No reason why Murray at 28 can't have a bounce back. For me, it doesn't make sense that San Jose, Ottawa, Edmonton could be an entire "tier" above Toronto since they have many of the tandem question marks, and lacking some of the long shot upside the Leafs have, which is a former 2x Stanley Cup winner and a former franchise level prospect (both having struggled in recent years).
The fact they have Boston and Detroit two tiers above Toronto with similar uncertainty makes no sense whatsoever since Swayman, Husso and Ned are all probably at a similar career stage as Samsonov himself, who is our number 2.
I have my doubts, but this ranking is lazy.
This. I mean I was so scarred by our previous goalies it can't be as bad... Right....? I'm not worried at all.Fine for the regular season. Playoffs to be determined.

The Zamboni driver was an upgrade over MrazekBetter.
Murray was pretty good.
Samsonov is an upgrade over Mrazek imo and $2M in savings.

Sir Isaac Nootin the choices here are not great are they? You worry more? So what about the preseason where Murray played well and stayed healthy leads you to now worry more than before.
Are Leafs new goalies better than Mrazek?
If you're a firm believer in Leafs needing goalies that make key saves at key times then Murray and Samsonov are not your guys, at least not based on analytics they're not,
Based on past 3 seasons "Goals Saved above Expected" stats Mrazek was pretty bad allowing > 7 more goals than expected.

However Leafs have now gone with a pair of goalies that statistically have been worse.
View attachment 592301
Samsonov has let in 20 goals more than expected that he should have saved in his past 89 games played.
View attachment 592303
Murray has among the worst stats in the entire NHL in his last 85 games played letting in 33 more goals than expected.
Already posted earlier that both Samsonov @ .902 and Murray @ .899 sv% are both below Mrazek @ .903 and all 3 are among the bottom 12 goalies in the league in save percentage last 3 years combined.
So we're going on the basis of a good pre-season?You worry more? So what about the preseason where Murray played well and stayed healthy leads you to now worry more than before.
