Now that the preseason is done, how are you feeling about the tandem of Murray and Samsonov going in

  • I worry more

So investigate for tie breakers.

Murray you have to pay to get rid of.

Samsonov has a history of being a head case with his former team.

They ranked us fine. If you know it's a gamble then who cares about ranks. You need the gamble to prove itself
My point is that it doesn't make sense that we are a tier below many of those other teams, when we have the same question marks as a good amount of them and arguably a more talented tandem. If anything we should be in the same tier.

The only thing that changed a tiny bit in preseason is that i'm a wee bit more confident in Murray and a wee bit less confident in Sammy.

But only a very wee bit.

When one compares Swayman

&
Husso

to
Samsonov

When you compare these 3 goalies on SV% and GA/G this past season the results are not close.

If you like Goalies based on "Goals saved above expected" results.

Then those are not close also.

Agreed Leaf Nation fans are banking on upside but the starting points of that are very different, if you see these 3 as comparable players. If the Leafs entered this year with Swayman or Husso in net based on last years performance the expectations would be very different. IMO.

How did Husso do in the playoffs? I forget.

For me, it doesn't make sense that San Jose, Ottawa, Edmonton could be an entire "tier" above Toronto since they have many of the tandem question marks, and lacking some of the long shot upside the Leafs have, which is a former 2x Stanley Cup winner and a former franchise level prospect (both having struggled in recent years).

The fact they have Boston and Detroit two tiers above Toronto with similar uncertainty makes no sense whatsoever since Swayman, Husso and Ned are all probably at a similar career stage as Samsonov himself, who is our number 2.

I have my doubts, but this ranking is lazy.
Exactly. I dont care what the stats say. They don't always tell the whole story. Players have bad seasons and bounce backs all the time. People thought Giroux was close to being done because he had a 58 pt season and then turned around to have 102 and 85 pt seasons the following years. Same goes for injuries. People thought Crosby would be a concussion away from being done and went on to have a long career. No reason why Murray at 28 can't have a bounce back.

I have more faith in Murray and Samsonov than I do in some of those other tandems and they're not a full tier or 2 better than us.

Fine for the regular season. Playoffs to be determined.
This. I mean I was so scarred by our previous goalies it can't be as bad... Right....? I'm not worried at all.

I’ve learned a long, long time ago that you never base how anything is going to go in the regular season upon anything that happened in preseason. One has nothing to do with the other, absolutely nothing.

I don’t have high expectations from this goaltending duo. My reasons are based on statistical facts that no one can refute to me. Murray hasn’t been good in almost 5 years. Samsonov Has never had good numbers to begin with.

How can I claim to be excited about our goaltending from watching a couple of minor league games that mean nothing? If anything, I’m more worried now that I was in the off-season. Why? Because statistical facts don’t tell lies. People will see on Wednesday and Thursday, guarantee you that both games will be high scoring for both sides.

They are going to need to rely on Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner playing otherworldly to outscore their goaltending issues that will inevitably rear it’s ugly head to everyone watching. It’s going to happen, people will probably call me negative and say I’m wrong, but I’m not wrong, you will see.

Better.

Murray was pretty good.

Samsonov is an upgrade over Mrazek imo and $2M in savings.

Are Leafs new goalies better than Mrazek?

If you're a firm believer in Leafs needing goalies that make key saves at key times then Murray and Samsonov are not your guys, at least not based on analytics they're not,

Based on past 3 seasons "Goals Saved above Expected" stats Mrazek was pretty bad allowing > 7 more goals than expected.

However Leafs have now gone with a pair of goalies that statistically have been worse.

Samsonov has let in 20 goals more than expected that he should have saved in his past 89 games played.

Murray has among the worst stats in the entire NHL in his last 85 games played letting in 33 more goals than expected.

Already posted earlier that both Samsonov @ .902 and Murray @ .899 sv% are both below Mrazek @ .903 and all 3 are among the bottom 12 goalies in the league in save percentage last 3 years combined.

Just gonna leave this here. Don't know why, just because.

what does what Mrazek did for Carolina having anything to do with how the leafs goaltending compares from this year to last year?

C’mon. I’m happy they didn’t implode during the preseason but the only sane answer is no change which isn’t even an option. People changing their mind because of some meaningless preseason games is this market in a nutshell.

I am pleased though with how both Murray and Samsonov did. Couldn’t have asked for more really from either. I just can’t change my answer based on these few games.

Save Percentage (Regular Season and Playoffs)

21-22 Toronto Total: 89.94%
21-22 Murray/Sammy: 90.07%
20-21 Murray/Sammy: 89.67%
19-20 Murray/Sammy: 90.47%
3yrs Murray/Sammy: 90.11%

The most likely outcome is we get the same level of goaltending we got last year.

Hopefully the fact that both goalies are talented, relatively young, and playing behind an excellent defense, they'll do better than that.

About the same

We'll see how it goes when we start the real games. We have a good start and I'll believe a bit more

Worry less. Obviously it’s just pre-season, but Murray looked more “back to himself” than I expected. If he’s healthy and playing well that’s HUGE for us, and I have a bit more confidence in this happening than I did before preseason.

I also think we’re a strong puck possession and defence team now, a team where it’s relatively easy for goalies to do well. That’s not new, but is a reason to expect better numbers from Murray and Samsonov this year than what they put up last year. We’re basically the opposite of those Leafs teams from the mid 2000s to mid/late 2010s, where we played garbage D and it was almost impossible for a goalie to thrive.

Murray looks like he is poised for a Bounce Back, health kind of scares me, but Samsonov has looked good too, im optimistic this Tandem will be the best we have had in some time

I don't think it will be worse than last year. Still major boom or bust set up Dubas is going with, I'm cautiously optimistic it will work out.
