Decision on LeLacheur Park looming for Lowell

A decision on whether to pay up to $30 million on upgrades to LeLacheur Park, former home of the Lowell Spinners (Short-A; NY-Penn League), to house a Boston Red Sox-owned MiLB team relocating from Salem is looming–and it’s not looking great for the Sox.

The game plan from the Red Sox when MLB downsized MiLB from 160 to 120 years was to let the Spinners down, lobby the city for LeLacheur Park improvements, and them move the Salem Red Sox to town. That LeLacheur Park would need a lot of work is not exactly a secret: it was built as a college/short-season ballpark, and it would need a big investment if Lowell wanted to pursue a return to pro baseball. How big, given the rising cost of materials and inflation, is beginning to be an alarming issue for a city facing its own economic issues. One incoming estimate from an incoming Lowell City Councilor now potentially sits north of $30 million; that’s up from the $10 million tossed about by city officials in late August 2021.

An investment of that size is unlikely to receive much support on the City Council, unless the Red Sox want to fund it.

Pawtucket has a perfectly good stadium just sitting there unused. Bring Salem to Pawtucket!!

Word is McCoy will be torn down for a new high school
That absolutely sucks, I loved McCoy and it was where I saw my first pro sports event when i was 10. I know the neighborhood isn't great but that stadium and Pawtucket should always have a team.

The neighborhoods around McCoy are older and a tad run down but I don’t think they have much trouble/crime. St. Rays is right there and a public school that’s slipping my mind.

What Luchinno did to the PawSox is sickening. The fact they’re probably going to tear it down for a high school is sad.

They should use the stadium for high school championships (baseball and football) and work on getting a team back (since one should have never left).

Not looking forward to this. As frustrating as it may be sometimes, the human element is part if the game. Not sure how much longer I will follow baseball once it hits MLB.

Im all for robots. MLB umps are some of the biggest assholes in professional sports when it comes to major league officials. Too many massive egos thinking they’re bigger than the game and making it about them.

After being at game 6 vs. Houston last fall, where Laz Diaz missed over 20 ball and strike calls, including missing a pivotal strike 3 by Eovaldi, I am entirely fine with balls and strikes being called electronically.

Valid points. I'm just being crotchety I guess.

Robot umps seem impractical, but after this guy, I'm all for it...
