Schiefele had the advantage of having nothing NHL ready at 20

Avalanche are really close to being a top team . Few more pieces and they will be scary.
next year they'll likely be adding Makar and 1 of Hughes or Kakko.....

Let's run with that. Although a Nietzsche would also serve.

Ah, yes. That's MUCH more appropriate. :P

Not the strongest game of the year that is for sure. Colorado played hard and got pucks towards the net. I thought they out played us in the 1st but after that until we got up by 3 goals it was pretty even game.

Lowry's line. Not much to say but "GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY!". Just too strong and hard on the puck for any team to handle. Other fans totally underestimate this line because they don't have the numbers but other then the top lines of most teams I would take this line over any other line in hockey.

Copp line. Copp is a bit of a mini Lowry. He has made the 4th line that much more effective. Early on in the game he had a big hit and he was dynamite in the faceoffs. Lemieux looked solid out there and his speed and tenacity on the puck was on display. Appleton was just ok and he needs to up his tempo if he wants to stay in the lineup

Scheifs line. I could complain about them but they were tasked to go head to head with Rantanen's line most of the night. Then I look on the scoresheet and they combined for 8 points and 3 goals. Great hand eye by Scheif on that goal.

Little's line. They struggled. I thouight Little/Roslo had a little bit more chemistry today. They certainly tried to cycle and work down low with the puck. Now Laine is struggling something bad. When a pure goal scorer struggles, they look worse then anyone else because they tend not to be able to do anything else look at Tarasenko in St.Louis, they are even entertaining the idea of trading him which honestly is good for us because he is out of our division. But there are times when I see Laine do the right thing on a shift like finish a check hard. It is those things that will make him a more rounded player when the puck isn't going in the net. If he can learn to be effective when everything he shoots isn't going in the net he will be a top NHL player. Right now though he isn't

The Defense. They were bit off tonight. Need to get their legs moving earlier in the game and move the puck with consistency. Kuli made a bad decision that cost us a goal and Morrissy/Trouba got caught standing around watching the puck on the Avs 3rd goal. They have been lately a strong point of our team so they can have an off night as a group once in a while and have the offense bail them out. But I am sure all of them would like to put this game behind them.

The Goalie. I thought Helly was great. When he can see the shots he tends to stop them. He can make some hard saves look very easy because his positioning is so good. I can't really fault him on any of the goals and I thought he was the difference maker tonight.

Good to know I'm not alone. I thought the same thing.

Jets badly outplayed?

Nah, not at all..

They were for stretches - those times they were hemmed in for so long. Gotta give the Avs some credit. But Jets had some extended O zone time too.

Which seems mostly directed at a stupid video game right now.

According to those around him he is a student of the game ala Scheifele, and very hard on himself. Lots of practice and video (not games) etc...

I remember seeing videos and pictures of Scheifele out golfing and boating and waterskiing etc during those years. You can't just spend 100% of your time on your profession.

Agreed. In general terms I'm still really big on the kid, but has he proved to you the contract that everyone assumes he will get? Would you pay him in the $10 m range?

I won't comment on contract numbers because I don't even have half of the information or spend any time around him to give me a good idea of what his drive and determination and ceiling is like. The coaches and Chevy do. I'll leave that up to them.

Sure, but we're talking about the game as a whole. All teams get hemmed in their zone for stretches. It was a good game, the Jets were better in net and in transition and that was the difference.

Did you watch the game? He’s a full second behind the play, all the time. Unless he has the time and space on the PP, he’s a liability.

What's your solution? Send a rocket finalist to the Moose? Trade him? Or accept that he's young, lanky and needs time to grow into his frame and mature his overall game?

Jets games don't really affect my overall mood, thanks for trying though. We still played bad, no amount of you glossing it over will change that, and this current level of play will lead to another playoff exit. But hey, 7 goalz.

I agree we got outplayed last night but we took advantage of another teams breakdowns and their shit goaltending. To add some context to this we had a brutal first period where we seemed to be sleepwalking and somehow had the lead. The fact that we kept getting goals against the flow of play probably inhibited that big push that seems to come from the trailing team to even up the shots in hockey. There was no ebb and flow because we were never chasing it score wise. We never really needed to collectively wake up and take it to them because they kept leaving the barn door wide open. I didn't like the defensive play of our team (Lowry's line notwithstanding) but we were in a track meet and sometimes shit happens.

I have no idea how the Jets are going to look come May but we have a half a season to keep working on the details.

It's very funny how my enjoyment of the game and my perspective of the game is different when I just watch the game without participating in the GDT or the PGT (even after a win!).

I thought the game was highly entertaining and most of the team played very well. Then I come here and find out that we weren't very good and were lucky to win. To top it all off I find out that 'fans' at the game actually boo'd Laine?????

:help:

And you are not alone! Some quick research shows this to be a common sentiment on HF Avs, too. Lowry is for real.

IMHO though Scheif displayed something very early on...hockey smarts and ice-vision (as hard as it is to quantify those). A self-professed hockey-nerd with the desire to improve.

And Laine doesn't?

IMO 20 year old Laine is light years ahead of 20 year old Scheifele in all areas except work ethic, where they are probable equal.

Maybe a speed skating coach he needs to move his feet quicker and learn how to pivot quicker he has pretty good straight line speed

Not sure though......Joe Thornton has always lacked physical quickness but he is a beast and never seems to turn the puck over. Pate has several options for growth when it comes to puck security which is his number one "opportunity" for improvement . He can increase his quickness (tough but not impossible for a 6'5" guy), he can get rid of the puck much faster before pressure arrives (mental speed), or he can increase his strength and shielding techniques. I think options 2 and 3 will come naturally as he ages and gets more experience. As far as the skating thing goes I would seriously look into who Barkov used to transform his skating. That is one of the only big men I have seen completely transform his edge work, speed, and quickness. I am less concerned about his quickness than most people and if he can improve it that would be a bonus but he just needs to process the game faster and get the puck off his stick quicker.

It can get frustrating watching Patrik get down on himself and implode but he is just going to have to grow through it and I believe he will.

How does a team that has 2 wins in last 10 games starting a very important and crucial 5 game road trip with a b2b in wpg then Calgary the following night play. Like they did last nite. We were never going to match them in intensity or desperation. We got 2 points. Moving on.
