One thing I would like to do is give it up to Rantanen. I know Mikko probably gets less love than he should because he plays with Mac and he plays out in Colorado but the guy is a f***ing beast. Two seasons ago when the Lanche were putrid I was in BellMTS and in the PGT I was marveling and how big and fast Rantanen was that night and said how he was going to be a star. Last night it was more of the same but his entire game is incredible. With Mikko and Nate they make zone entries seem like childs play. If Makar pans out and they somehow land Hughes in this upcoming draft they are going to be one of the fastest most skilled teams in the NHL.

Laine needs a sports psychologist or something. No reason he should be playing this bad
Actually, I think he needs more explosive skating and stamina. Fitness trainer, not a psychologist, but it'll have to wait until the off-season. I won't be surprised if we see a substantial change to Laine's off-season training regimen next summer, guided by the Jets' training staff.

That's not going to happen in season.... a sport psychologist might though. Seems like it's a mental/between the ears thing as well as the physical traits you outlined

Also the refs last night were bad. I don't usually complain (well, maybe I do)...but I was having flashbacks to the old days of "fall down near a Jet for an automatic penalty". And was Pavelec between the pipes? Hellebuyck was diving around almost as much as the Avs

This is why I prefer Brossoit over Helle-- I think he has great balance, and stays on his feet a lot more than Helle, who's continually flopping around. Brossoit is also better conditioned IMO. I think the Jets were lucky the Avs didn't pot a few more goals, and missed on their shots.

It's already guided by the Jets' training staff. They said he's right on track at this point.

I’m waiting for a certain poster to come and stir up off season training....in 3-2-1

Hard to pad your shot-share with rebounds when Grubauer lets in the first one most of the time.

Just sayin'...

I actually think Broissoit is far more 'floppy' than Helle, though I do remember thinking last night that he looked a lot like Pavelec.

Do you guys think that Flaherty is getting to him?

You've been on this board long enough to know that we have no clue what any of the assistant coaches do, so I have to assume you're just trying to get people riled up.

Goalies lose their positioning during/after breakdowns. It happens.

There was that one goal against where Helle was flat out on his back doing the Steve Mason snow angel. Got a good laugh out of that one. But Helle by far outplayed the backup at the other end of the ice which wasn't exactly a tough one. And the Avs sure blew a ton of shots wide which always helps.

seriously Helly was flopping around his crease more than a clubbed seal pup and the Avs kept shooting

Neat. I don't agree that they badly outplayed us tbh.

I understand what the corsi says. They Carolina Hurricane'd us, shot from everywhere without great scoring chances. Someone posted the 5v5 scoring chances at 10-9 for them, that's not dummying someone. Grubauer wasn't that bad, maybe 1-2 goals he should/could have stopped.

Even if you look at that graph, we go into the second up 2-1, push back and get it to 4-1 before they start heavily out corsing us.
Their strategy seemed to be to try and get deflections. Shoot the puck in from distance and try to create chaos down low. It was somewhat effective...had Helle swimming around a lot.

the direction of the rebound was luck.
the contact out of midair was pure skill

Every time you have less than 100% chance of success, but achieve a success, you got lucky to some degree. He used skill to give himself a chance to hit it. Maybe even a very high chance. But if his chance of success was 95% and his success rate was 100% (1-for-1), he got lucky, and you could even calculate exactly how much.

TL;DR: both involved some luck and both involved some skill; to varying degrees, to be sure, but we shouldn't even be taking the first step down the road to thinking that success is 100% a matter of triumphant will.

That's supposed to be the Avs' #1 goalie going forward...

It just was stirred up....
Only because I think it's an obvious topic to bring up at this point. Laine has immense skill and hockey sense, but right now he looks like he needs better quickness, stamina and balance. We all said the same thing about Scheifele during his first few seasons, and he turned it around. I'm expecting the same from Laine, but we haven't seen it yet. Maybe it's the age, not the training, though.
