Horse Racing: HORSE RACING: CNBC to air Kentucky Derby preps at Fair Grounds (LA) and Turfway (KY) -- 6 pm to 7pm ET, March 22

A Florida-bred running in South Florida just pulled a 17-to-1 upset in the Gotham. Reylu Gutierrez's smile could light up Manhattan tonight. Onto the Kentucky Derby.

How does the Gulfstream track handicapper not have the 2 in her top four in a field of 6?
or another way of putting it-the handicapper has the 2 picked to finish last or next to last. or just totally off the board. which would be beyond insane. the 2's racing form as a 2 year old was just as good if not better than every horse in today's field.

who was the handicapper-samantha perry?

Yes.

Baffert has roughly $4.5 million of horses running in this Derby prep at Santa Anita. A field of five and he has three horses.

and she used to be a jockey.

i am assuming she read the same telegraph horse sheets that you, i and every other bettor were as well.

ehh. i'm going to assume that she didn't predict master johnny v to wire the field in the finale for today either.
Pletcher had an outstanding day today.

Mike Smith had a 22-1 winner. Good day for the Hall of Fame riders.

  • March Forward: Three Kentucky Derby preps highlighted a busy day to start the month.
  • Happy Stewart Elliott Day:

  • Todd Pletcher had a gigantic afternoon. He finished 16 5-5-0 and among his five wins were three graded stakes victories and a million-dollar+ debut phenom who exploded at Tampa Bay.
  • Brad Cox sent horses to six tracks which resulted in four wins He finished 13 4-1-2.
  • Steve Asmussen had a 4-win day finishing 18 4-2-1 at three tracks.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Stakes: Named for legendary horses Tom Fool, Stymie and Busher all whom were top 50 race horses in the end of the century poll conducted a few years ago.
  • Manny Franco rode four winners.
  • Race 4: Full Moon Madness (Kendrick Carmouche/Michelle Nevin) won the Grade 3 $175,000 Tom Fool Stakes.
  • Race 8: Flood Zone (Reylu Gutierrez/Brad Cox) pulled a massive upset at 17-to-1 to win the Grade 3 $300,000 Gotham and with the victory came 50 points toward entry into the Kentucky Derby, now a virtual lock if all goes well. The lightly raced Florida-bred Frosted colt was out for the third time and entered off a victory at Gulfstream at 16-to-1.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Trainers Atop: Brittany Russell (39%) and Jaime Ness both have 17 wins to lead the standings. Mike Gorham is having a stellar meet with 9 wins at a 31% strike rate. A former New Englander whose family owned and distributed fire extinguishers. His earliest wins came at Rockingham Park (NH) and Suffolk Downs (MA) in the mid-80s.
Tampa Bay Downs (Florida):
  • Race 6: Valentinian (Samuel Marin/Todd Pletcher), a $1.5 million Into Mischief colt, exceled in a debut 1 1/16th mile debut performance. Pletcher has himself a bad boy. A very impressive debut with Brad Cox, Chad Brown and a stablemate among the foes. Valentinian, an Into Mischief colt, paid $6.00. A $1.5 million purchase price by Eclipse Thoroughbred (southern Californian Aron Wellman).

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Sunday: $4,000,000 estimated Mandatory Payout for the Rainbow Six.
  • Handle: $27.8 million.
  • Fountain of Youth Day: A top-notch card with much talent to offer. Eight of the 14 races were graded stakes
  • Repeat Winning Riders: Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode four winners. Junior Alvarado rode three winners. John Velazquez and Luis Saez had two wins apiece. All four riders had two graded stakes winners. Tyler Gaffalione won twice. Despite 14 races, only six riders had wins.
  • Repeat Winning Trainer: Todd Pletcher had three winners including two graded stakes.
  • Race 14: Capture The Flag (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) won the finale at 14-to-1 by a head. Pletcher finished 1-2.

  • Race 13: Sovereignty (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won the Grade 2 $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes in a thriller and with the victory earned 50 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. River Thames (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) was picked up in the nick of time.

  • Race 9: Four across-the-wire with two separate photo finishes to determine placement.

Fonner Park (Nebraska):
  • Race 9: Tennessee Moon (David Cardoso/Mark Hibdon) won the Bold Accent Stakes. The 5-year-old mare lost her first two starts in 2025 but she was the winningest horse in North America in 2024 with 13 victories in 18 starts.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $15 million.
  • Flavien Prat rode three winners.
  • Michael McCarthy trained three victors among the final four races among a 4-win day
  • Race 3: Liguria (Juan Hernandez/Michael McCarthy) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Buena Vista Stakes.
  • Race 6: Book Smart (Mike Smith/Robert Hess), with the second highest odds at 22-to-1 in a field off 11, was victorious for the Hall of Fame rider.
  • Race 7: The $2 daily double was $1,099.
  • Race 8: Journalism (Umberto Rispoli/Michael McCarthy) won the Grade 2 $300,000 San Felipe Stakes and among the defeated were three Bob Baffert runners who totaled roughly $4.5 million in purchase prices. Barnes (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert), sent off the favorite and bought for more than $3 million) placed and suffered a defeat, a rather sound defeat, for the first time.

  • Race 9: Formidable Man (Umberto Rispoli/Michael McCsrthy) won the Grade 1 $300,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile.

  • Race 10: Locked (Jose Ortiz/Todd Pletcher) was sent off the favorite and established the biggest romp -- 8+ lengths -- in 88 editions of the $300,000 Grade I Santa Anita Handicap race. The Gun Runner colt is now 8 5-1-2 in his first race since placing as the favorite in the Pegasus World Cup.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Manny Franco won four straight races. The past two days, he cleaned up at New York with a 15 8-1-2 stretch and has been victorious on nine of his past 16 rides.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: Over $16 million which brought Gulf's two-day total to roughly $44 million.
  • Race 3: Gotham Stakes winning rider Reylu Gutierrez returned to south Florida and won his second ride of the day.
  • Race 11: $3.6 million added to the existing Pick 6 pool. The race took $4.4 million in action. All winners to the Rainbow 6 collected $1,209.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 6: Maysam (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) wired the field to win the Grade 3 $100,000 Santa Ysabel Stakes and collect 25 points toward the Kentucky Oaks, a prize reduced by 50% due to two scratches which reduced the field to four runners. Superfecta wagers were honored and for $1.0 the return was $.68. Supa Speed (Flavien Prat/John Sadler) was sent off the favorite but lost by mere inches.

2024 Horse of the Year and Champion 3 Year-old Filly THORPEDO ANNA has the inside slot in race 10 at Oaklawn on Saturday in the $400,000 Azeri Stakes. Anna, bought for $40,000, has earned $3.8 million. She was last out in a Breeders' Cup win in November.

Tampa Bay Downs will release the track's biggest card of the meet later today for Saturday. Included will be the Tampa Bay Derby with 50 points expected to be awarded to the victor.

Saturday, March 8, 2025

Tampa Bay Downs (Florida):
  • Handle: $17.6 million for Tampa Bay Derby Day which is the second highest handle in track history.
  • Card: Four graded stakes.
  • Race 5: Skippylongstocking (Tyler Gaffalione/Saffie Joseph) boosted his career record to 30 10-3-6 with close to $3,500,000 earned in winning the Grade 3 $125,000 Challenger Stakes. Skippy has now won this race the past three years, his only three starts at Tampa Bay. He has raced at 15 tracks among his 30 starts (14 in FL, 4 in NY, 3 WV, 3 KY, 2 CA, 1, MD, 1 PA, 1 AR, 1 IA).

  • Race 9: Saffron Moon (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the Grade 2 $225,000 Hillsborough Stakes.

  • Race 10: Nitrogen (Jose Ortiz/Mark Casse) won the Grade 3 $200,000 Florida Oaks.

  • Race 11: Owen Almighty (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Brian Lynch) won the Grade 3 $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby. Despite earning 50 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby, connections indicated that the colt will be pointed to a race elsewhere on the Ky. Derby card. Owen Almighty is named after a member within the ownership's family and was purchased for $350,000. The Speightstown colt is 6 3-2-0. Per the track's website: The winning time of 1:42.30 for the mile-and-a-sixteenth distance was the second fastest in race history, bettered only by the 1:41.90 mark of Tacitus in 2019.

  • Flavien Prat rode eight times, all for trainer Chad Brown. He finished 8 2-1-1.
  • Chad Brown won two stakes, his lone winners among 15 horses sent out in eight races. He finished 2nd and 3rd in the day's feature race.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $11 million.
  • Race 10: Nic's Style (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won the Grade 3 $165,000 Hurricane Bertie Stakes. Alvarado, fresh off being named North America Jockey of the Week, has turned into a quite dependable rider with a perfectly timed finish.

  • Paco Lopez rode five winners. He ended the day 9 5-2-0.
1741486879379.png

Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Attendance: 33,000 which nearly mirrors the town of Hot Springs' population. The crowd for the Rebel Stakes was 36,000 late last month. The Arkansas Derby Day attendance and handle should be electrifying. Great race track!
  • Handle: $9.7 million.
  • Race 10: Thorpedo Anna (Brian Hernandez, Jr./Ken McPeek) was sent off at the imposing odds of 1-to-9 and recorded an easy victory against an overmatched field to win the Grade 2 $400,000 Azeri Stakes. The 2024 North America Horse of the Year and Champion 3-Year-old Filly is now 11 9-2-0 with over $4,000,000 earned. She was bought for $40,000.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $11 million.
  • Race 8: Cavalieri (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) remained undefeated to win the Grade 1 $300,000 Beholder Stakes. Stablemate Richi (Antonio Fresu) placed. The $900,000 Nyquist filly is a multiple graded stakes winner and is a perfect 4 4-0-0 with all races in California.

  • Race 9: Air Force Red (Armando Ayuso/Leonard Powell) won the $100,000 Grade 3 San Simeon Stakes.

Three scratches in the Virginia Derby.

Irad Ortiz picked up a mount earlier on the card riding for Mark Simms, a small stable trainer who got his first winner at Fargo, North Dakota.

Thursday, March 13, 2025

Ocala Sale (Florida):
  • $$$$$: A record-setting $3,000,000 was spent on a Gun Runner colt at the Ocala 2-year-old sale. More than $65 million was spent on 432 head. Based on the owner, Zedan, I would expect Bob Baffert to train.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 9: With a $101.60 winner, the $.50 Pick 5 returned more than $296,000. The $.20 Pick 6 returned more than $298,000.
Friday, March 14. 2025

Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Francisco Arrieta rode five winners. He finished 8 5-0-1.
Saturday, March 16, 2025
  • Brittany Russell's winning ways ended but she is 13 6-5-1 (12/13 ITM) after going 5 0-4-0 today with four second-place finishes at Colonial.
  • Francisco Arrieta won twice early on the Oaklawn card and at one p9int won six times on eight mounts combined with Friday.
Colonial Downs (Virginia):
  • Weather: Concerns about racing in Virginia this time of year were dwarfed under sun-drenched skies.
  • Handle: $6.5 million wagered and a crowd estimated at 8,500 made for a highly successful day.
  • Early Hiccups: The technical issues with the opening race on Friday was highly publicized and quite embarrasing for the track but otherwise the first ever 3-day meet in March was mostly a hit.
  • Flavien Prat, the reigning North America winner for Outstanding Jockey of 2024, rode five winners including three consecutive races, all MSW, for Brad Cox.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode three winners.
  • Brad Cox had three MSW winners among four horses he sent out. Two of the winners made debuts. Good show!
  • Race 8: Fondly (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Graham Motion) was the lightest run horse in the race, out for the second time, but she remained perfect in winning the $250,000 Virginia Oaks. The winner received 50 points towards entry in the Kentucky Oaks.

  • Race 9: American Promise (Nik Juarez/Wayne Lukas) won the $500,000 Virginia Derby. At 7-to-1, the winner had a previous sloppy form winning just once in eight starts. Now, Lukas has potentially his 51st lifetime starter in the Kentucky Derby as the winner received 50 points towards entry into the race.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Junior Alvarado rode four winners among the first six races. He ended the day with those four wins.
  • Tyler Gaffalione rode three winners.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Canceled: High winds and safety precautions. With this among the last few days of the meet, Fair Grounds will all Tuesday to the schedule and will race each day until the finale on Sunday.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 9: Booth (Erik Asmussen/Steve Asmussen) wired the field and gave the jockey his first career graded stakes winner in the Grade 3 $250,000 Whitmore Stakes.
Turf Paradise (Arizona):
  • Canceled: Inclement weather. A possible makeup day for Saturday is being discussed.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $10 million.
  • Race 8: Lady Claypoole (Tiago Pereira/Richard Baltas) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Santa Ana Stakes.
  • Race 10: The last race priced $13,000+ for the $3 Pick 3 and over $137,000 for the $.50 Pick 5.
