Movies: Horror Movie Discussion

I also find Babadook and It Follows to be way overrated in the same way as non Horror Snowpiercer.

Babadook for the same reason as Snowpiercer though, people try too hard to make movies deeper than they are. Just because there is a hidden meaning behind things doesn't mean the film is a masterpiece.

Same thing for literature and music!

watched 'As Above, So Below' yesterday. what a steamy pile of crap that was. so stupid. 3/10.

I have a few others on tap ...hopefully they're better ...shouldn't be hard.

The Lazarus Effect
Demonic
We Are Still Here
Honeymoon

and Coherence ...which isn't really horror I guess ...at least according to imdb (ie, sci fi, thriller)

I hate how a lot of horror movies and movies in general are becoming hand held/lost footage crap. It makes me nauseous watching and hard to focus.

I still have to watch
- Poltergeist (remake)
- The Lazarus Effect
- Deliver Us From Evil

Recently watched Annabelle, it was okay, the doll was pretty creepy specially
[spoil] the scene with the demon/devil holding it... idk if thats even a spoiler[/spoil]

A movie that I watched and enjoyed (Babadook), and another I will watch (It Follows). Snowpiercer was a very entertaining film too, enjoyed it a lot.

Is there a reason why horror movies are all rated extremely low on review sites? The only reason I watched Babadook because of its high ratings and why I want to watch It Follows.

I want to watch a great film and horror would be a fresh change so do I dismiss these ratings? Seems like most of the ones online are rated badly as well, but if there are recommendations I am all ears (recent).

I have to wonder why for such a popular genre it doesn't have films that can challenge for best picture (i.e once every 5 years).

I think it's because it's such a formulaic genre. So many horror movies just follow the same tropes, and it's difficult for movies to really stand out from one another. I don't think it's so much that they're "bad" movies, but more so that they aren't doing anything unique, or are falling into a lot of the same horror movie cliches. When you get movies like The Babadook or It Follows that have deeper/multiple meanings or turns some aspect of the genre on its head, those are the ones that seem to resonate more favorably with critics.

I just enjoyed the acting and the overall creepy atmosphere the movie created. I didn't read too much into it past being a monster movie with some allusions to motherhood, sleep deprivation etc.

We haven't had a really good culty horror movie in a while. When I say culty, I mean things like THE ORIGINAL Wicker Man, Children of the Corn (to an extent) and things of that ilk, things that could actually happen (minus the whole He Who Walks Behind the Rows)

Current: Housebound 97% on RottenTomatoes (just a whole lot of fun)
All-time: The Vanishing 100% on RT (the Netherlands original version; avoid like the plague the US remake with Jeff Bridges and Kiefer Sutherland which is beyond terrible)
Vintage: Diabolique (original) 97% on RT; Eyes without a Face 98% on RT; Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original) 98% on RT

If you have never seen any of these, the original version of The Vanishing is definitely the one to see.

For a recommendation on a (decently) well-reviewed horror movie, watch You're Next if you haven't seen it. It's another one of those movies that transcends the genre to some degree, although some may not strictly classify it as a horror.

The "twist" of the original Sleepaway Camp is still the scariest part of any horror movie I've ever watched, and I've watched a ton of 'em. Something about that combo of shock, image, and sound that still creeps me out.

Not many horror movies reveal the killer with full frontal nudity, that's for sure.

(Half a dozen people are going to rush to watch it now, only to come back here angry with me)

I agree. Perhaps the only one that I actually sort of liked was Troll Hunter, and I think that that's because the characters are meant to be semi-professionals filming a documentary, so the picture is really good and mostly held steadily.

What did you think of The Innocents? One of my favourite vintage horrors.

It's a great movie, but again I think it's wrongly classified as a horror. Still though, awesome movie and a good subtle parody of other films like that. Adam Wingard has found his game.

At the time I had just finished reading Henry James The Turn of the Screw, which is untypical of James but very effective, and I felt a little letdown by the adaptation. I may well have underrated the film as a result. I'll rent it soon and see what I now think of it.

Might give You're next and Housebound a try. Watched the trailers for both but the antagonists weren't very scary.

Any other recommendations? A pretty "recent" film "Kill List" was quite good. Disturbing but not over the top WTF (refuse to ever watch those french and serbian horrors, and the other one about centipedes).

Seems like well made horror-comedy is making a comeback, would like to see some horror-thrillers.

Watched The Lazarus Effect last night. It was alright. Only really watched it because Olive Wilde is a babe, and Donald Glover was in it!

Whats with all the horror movies from the past few years all ending with the killer/demon/ghost/entity always doing something bad like killing/scaring/reviving/bla bla bla in the last scene of the movie. Can't they ever have a happy ending where they just live! or without a jump-scare to lead the credits in

Examples:
The Gallows
Women In Black
Friday The 13th (2009)
Nightmare On Elm Street (2011)
Lazarus Effect
Paranormal Activity(s)
Drag Me To Hell
Ouija
I know there are more but these came to mind right away.

Lazarus Effect excited me because that main cast is the best I've seen in a movie in a long time. But, the movie was bad.

Yeah there where a few freaky scenes, but it didn't feel like a horror movie.. felt like a monster/action movie for some reason. Try to stop the evil thing from getting to powerful type thing. It was okay.

Question bout it

I watched The Innocents again tonight, and it gave me chills on several occasions. I think what I must have objected to the first time around was the movie making it a little too obvious a little too early that Deborah Kerr might actually be seeing something, thus slightly compromising the delicate ambiguity that James carefully constructed in The Turn of the Screw. But this time around, with a lot of distance from the novella, I found the film genuinely creepy and the ending eerily disturbing. Somehow I think, with rare exceptions, this kind of refined horror is much more effective in black and white. Anyway, very good movie.

I enjoyed Grave Encounters. It's good for what it is just wish there were more spirit or ghostly parts.

Watched "Unfriended" horrible. The premise is ok but the execution sucked. Reminded me of "Pulse" which is better.
