Leafs were better team but not by much ... and it was correctly reflected in da score .. to me glad to see old Muzzy back to his normal self without shield OMG he looked like a #2 dman again ... and guess what happened folks Holl looked like he did before ---- it is not coincidence as Muzzy goes so goes Holl ... and Zach OMG what a beast player ... he is our best guy night in night out now for quite a stretch now

Jumbo is done father time has hit him ... I truly hope we don't make this another Paddy Marleau situation I'll leave it at that out of respect for Jumbo ... but everyone knows it it is da 500 pound gorilla in da room ... and Gally wow what another skater boy with skill who does not help out Willy or JT is da slightest ... move up Zach to get line going until a trade is made for a big fast tougher winger to play on that line to make it effective again..

But to me biggest disappointment was Dermy OMG I luv da kid but he is not learning properly ... even with Bogo training it is not getting better which it should have by now ... to me if we are going for Cup run then maybe, and I say this with a huge worry in my head, but maybe we should try to get another solid vet D for him ... oh I can't believe i said that but it is now starting to become more obvious ...

Lastly but not least Soupy please stay in your net buddy please ... clearly puck handling it not your forte ... we got solid puck handling dmen ... let them do their job ... and Rielly play f**** defense buddy you got caught again way too many times up ice ... what a joke on 3 on 3 you went up fine but both Matty and Mitch came back ... you were hanging around for a breakaway pass hoping they would play defesne and get puck to you???!!!!!??????!!!!! what da f***** ... dude you are nowhere remotely close to either in skill so get back to defense before we have to bench you

I think there's some truth here. As time goes by, I'm less and less impressed by these expected goal stats. They were IMO misleading for our loss to CLB in the playoffs and they've been misleading for many games this season when people have posted the numbers for one game to show how well we've been playing.

Agreed that the numbers for single games can be a little questionable, it's much better over a season in my opinion.

With that being said, I find it hard for anyone who knows the game to come out of last night's affair with a negative outlook on the team. They played well, and they only gave up 1 or 2 really danger chances against.

It seems like you may be projecting past organizational failures/dissapointment on to this years team, even though it's not the same team. If we had been on Ottawa's side, I would have been livid with the game - outplayed, outchanced and outworked resulting in a loss even though we were gift wrapped 2 unlikely gaffe goals.

Luckily, we were on the other side. The powerplay won't go 1 for 30 forever, and once it starts clicking again, the perception of how well we played will swing back the other way.

Too much one and done, will never work in playoffs, looked like a bad team with a popgun offense trying to win by volume shooting.

Blind passes to empty slot, no one around the crease when shots are taken, TO players not taking shots on the few occasions there is someone in front of the opposition's net, Nylander went to the net last year but rarely this year, way too much passing nobody taking the puck to their net, I thought Ottawa had far more dangerous shots, this is bad and the same Leaf team that was fading out of the playoffs last year.

Two goals against one of the worst teams in the NHL, all teams need to do is populate the front of their net and allow the Leafs to possess on the periphery all-night then TO will blind pass somewhere and be vulnerable, predictable and easily beaten.

TO won but won't against any quality opposition in important games.

Ah well, there's always next year.
Why are you here? lol

Showing off how wrong you are constantly is a bold move.

I wouldn't describe the Leafs as playing consistent run and gun hockey though. They've been pretty good at holding possession for longer in the opposing zone for more games than not.

The possession is meaningless without penetration to areas where multiple opportunities occur, the possession is peripheral, it's not winning hockey and goalies will continue to look Vezina worthy against TO. TO has 21 goals in the last 9 games, barely more than 2 goals a game for and every goalie they face look far better than TO's goalies, the losses aren't an Andersen problem and trading for Granlund who is another pass first non aggressive player would be simply piling on the same old, same old.

First game this season I’ve missed! But I still got to listen to it on the radio. I couldn’t be wrong, but it sounded like we were far better throughout large portions of the game. And Galchenyuk’s name was sure mentioned a lot, how did he play?

Matthews played great tonight. He looked closer to being completely healthy. He was throwing the body, took some good long range shots and he seemed to have better control of the puck. I'm hopeful he heels up to 100% soon and the team can score again. They need more from the other guys while he struggles to produce at the same clip.

Thornton and Simmonds look pretty rough out there. Thornton has lost all speed and energy. More of a shield and playmake type of player at this point. Simmonds doesn't look like the hands are working, but it's not to unpredictable given he just had a broken wrist. It was that way at years start I thought as well though. If you combined players they would be pretty rounded, but neither are bringing enough right now.

Glad they won but they don't look much like world-beaters lately. I'll feel better with Campbell in net for the playoffs but if they run with Fredlight, I won't be surprised just disappointed.

what's misleading about them? They aren't supposed to flawlessly predict the number of goals each team scores in every game

Campbell blaming himself for any lapses in an overall great performance and a win is infinitely more refreshing than the other guy throwing the team under the bus for his awful play and a loss. I can only imagine how the players feel
What's a quote of Freddy's that makes you say this?

High danger chances were 17-10 last night. Not sure if you need to take a course on statistics but regression will come and the leafs will start scoring goals again.

Yea, and even the flaws with data recording are more or less negated the bigger the sample size.

It's why Toronto, Florida, Tampa, NYI, Colorado, Vegas, Carolina are all in the top ten for xGF% and Buffalo, Detroit, Ottawa, NJ, Anaheim and Arizona are in the bottom ten.

There are other factors to look at of course, most importantly save%, but it's a fairly accurate description of what teams are controlling the play.

That was 5v5, All situations HD chances were 25-15 with the Leafs total being the highest recorded all season by any team.

It's astonishing that people actually felt the game was even or close to it last night.

There is a lot to be excited about with how the team has played recently, despite the losses.

I though Galchenyuk was great. Seems quick on his feet and a big upgrade over Vesey/Boyd/Barabanov etc. etc.

some people want to live in a fantasy world where the Leafs are really easily to outplay. Which is fine, but it's weird that they pretend to be Leafs fans

If this place is anything like armchair GM or reddit, a lot of our fanbase has become incredibly jaded by past failures and are incorrectly tying our current team's chance of success to those past disappointments. It's the only way I can explain the negativity around a season where I am seeing a hugely improved team.

Last few years it really felt like we were on the other side - often outplayed, but opportunistic scoring was keeping us alive (at least during Babcock's days). It's nice to actually feel like the team can keep up with anyone 5v5. I expect the powerplay to improve on it 3% conversation rate it's accomplished over the last month, also.

As usual, the Leafs had the puck for the vast majority of the game, but rarely take it into prime scoring areas. They pass around the outside, and wait to suck guys out position to take advantage of open ice created in the middle.

The problem is that after 20 games, the system teams have solidified their strategies, and it’s a lot harder to do what the Leafs did to training camp-less defensive schemes.

Only problem is your take is completely backwards - the biggest issue for the Leafs has been waiting for the perfect chance instead of shooting it on their just plain "good" chances.

This is why they rank so highly in shots in the slot, while being so mediocre in shots taken in general.

I disagree. His wrist is clearly hurt. He hasnt taken his signature wrist shot in weeks. Hes moved off his usual PP spot (which has cratered its effectiveness). Hes bobbling pucks. If his wrist is good, he scores on that great save Forsberg made (he doesnt hesitate to shoot as he did) and he likely scores in OT when he hit the net. His stick handling has also suffered. Hes not getting by dmen which he usual does with ease while maintaining control.

And thats just not my observation, leaving out the media rumblings about the injury.

EDIT: Rielly pass the puck into his feet, it doesn’t matter who that was, they aren’t getting that shot off in time with the puck in your feet. And Forsberg being in great position.

what is his “signature shot” ? He isn’t shooting, for whatever reason, we don’t know. But he took good wrist shots in the third and overtime just couldn’t connect. Additionally he has a man on him at all times. Literally chabot gave him no room to breathe yesterday.

this reminds me a lot of when he came back from the back injury. He was cleared and fit to play, but he was tentative, it took him a while to find his groove. If the wrist was a problem they would not play him and risk it being an issue long term. The issue in my opinion is 1, it is clear when Matthews comes back from injury he takes a while to readjust, maybe he’s scared to reinjure, but he plays tentative, 2. the media/fans make a big deal out of everything. He’s in a scoring slump. Happens to the best of them

3. the power play has been atrocious well before Matthews injury. Him moving off the half wall, seems to be more of the team trying to change it up as opposed to a response to his injury

Agreed.

Aside from our goaltending issues prior to Campbell coming off the IR, the only concerns I have are the sudden ineffectiveness of our special teams and our team shooting percentage. We have to get back to the league averages at the very least and we should be fine.

Teams are allowing the Leafs possession in the low/med danger areas because they are so skilled, and they are trying to block all the shooting lanes and keep them out of the high danger areas ... just random shooting will result in a turnover and a possible quick counter attack, teams have strategies when playing the Leafs
