Confirmed with Link: Holden to Boston for Rob O'Gara + 2018 3rd round pick

The HAHAHAHAH LULZ victory laps some of our posters are taking on the main boards on this trade are ridiculous.

It's a 3rd rounder, not a 1st. Holden is a solid depth Dman for a playoff push. Pull yourselves together. It's a fair trade all around.

It's the f***ing worst. Hate fans that do this.

It's a smart thing to do anyway to stock up on defensemen for a playoff run. A couple d-men get injured and you don't have the depth and you're screwed. That happened with the Rangers the year they had Stu Bickel who Torts would dress but wouldn't play.

I'd take that return all day, probably better than we could have hoped for. Not bad from Boston's POV either, especially if they use him right

Being the Org added themselves a 3rd, I figured I would take a look back to see how the team did with their 3rd round selections.

2010- No pick (traded)
2011- Fogarty
2012-No pick (traded)
2013- Tambellini, Buchnevich, Duclair
2014- Iverson
2015-Kovacs, Zborovski, Saarela
2016- Day

Not too shabby!

Duclair, Buch, and Saarela to an extent were homeruns. Day yet to be seen

I'd say well above average thanks to Buch, maybe right around average without him. Think that's about right?

Isles fan coming in peace. I think you guys did well in this trade. O’Gara has solid upside and could become an everyday NHL player. He’s only 24 and has really good size and moves well for his size. The 3rd rounder is a pick that you guys can use to make or use in a trade.

Holden is solid but he’s nothing special and obviously not in the teams long term plans.

Frankly doesn’t matter much what the previous 3rd round picks looked like. The best thing you can do during a rebuild is stock up on as many picks as possible. It’s random chance in those rounds.

There's a lot of luck involved, but certainly not random chance. Why pay Gordie any more than a subscription to Redline if that was the case.

We've done well enough with later round picks since Sather starting trading all our firsts that I have confidence our scouting staff is at least top half in the league for tilting the 'random chance' in their favour.

Not disagreeing with your point. I just think that the scouting staff deserve more credit than saying they got blindly lucky.

I watch O’Gara closely and have for som time now. A lot of Bruins fans will tell you he’s just an AHL-player, but then again, most Bruins fans said the same about Grzelcyk as recently as last summer. I’ve spoken with O’Gara a few times down in Providence and he really is a good kid who’s wise beyond his years.

I think O’Gara is an NHL-player and have maintained that standard for a while now— he just needs a real chance to play in the NHL and get steady ice time. He’s a 6’4” defensemen who skates extremely well, and frankly, guys over 6-feet shouldn’t be able to move like that. He’s a solid, puck-moving defender who wont put up high-totals in regards to points, but he will also make minimal mistakes and can skate the puck out of trouble. The Rangers have themselves a good, well-rounded, mature prospect in ROG— it’s a good return for Holden.

Buchnevich, Saarela and Duclair were all late or mid 3rds.

Two landed us big trade targets and one is our best young scorer.

This is a great trade. Holden will be benched in Boston in favor of a young kid. Your brain power doesnt increase with a jersey swap. He is one of the worst decision-making defensemen we've had in recent memory.

The good news is he cost us a 4th in a weak draft, and we traded him for a 3rd in a deep one.

Yay, Gorton. Now dont screw up the pick with some double-overage PKer.

Yep, and if you stock up, it makes it easier to move up when you want to. For instance if we had three thirds, and saw a guy in the third we really wanted, we could flip a couple of those to move up. It's all capital, and can be used in many ways.

Awesome, thanks for the report.

Thanks for the info. This scouting report makes it seem like he could actually be a useful piece for the NHL team. Hope it's the case.

So glad Holden is off this team. I think the level of my dislike for him is a bit irrational, but there's no question that he made a ton of boneheaded plays and misreads that drove me up a wall.

Holden came in and was asked to play a more difficult role than he ever had prior. Always have respect for guys who comehere and play above expectations - because it almost never happens for the Rangers.

Holden will forever be hated for his late-game performances in the playoffs, but we got solid value out of him.

I think he was hated here from day 1 for his advanced stats from the AVS.
