The Hockey News TOP 100 GOALIES OF ALL-TIME (2018)

64. Olaf Kolzig
65. Braden Holtby

Was the list made before the Capitals won the 2018 Stanley Cup? There is no way Kolzig should be above Holtby and I love me some Olie Kolzig.

It was after the cup.

Holtby was just 28 and had played just over half the career games of Kolzig. I'm surprised there was only one spot separating them, honestly.

Top 4 going in which gets us to an even 35 (yay), another four added to the pool due to the last huge break in the aggregate coming up (yay). This week ended on a good note after looking pretty shaky on Wednesday!

Also - poor Eddie!

When voting Giacomin 9th, I never considered for a moment that I may be giving him the second highest vote he would receive this round. Kind of surprised that just how bad this vote turned out for him.

Being high on Giacomin is quite unlike me...

This is the first week where there isn't a big break in voting results to give us an easy place to cut it off. Five points between 4th and 5th, as well as between 6th and 7th, isn't very much. Since we're adding six this week from the aggregate no matter what, we're going to keep it simple and just add the top six here.

Barrasso gets the tiebreak over Rogie. They were tied for finishing ahead on more ballots at 9-9, but Barrasso received more 1st place votes as well as fewer NRs, so that's my tiebreak here. They are functionally tied.

Rinne, Rask, and Giacomin all getting #1 votes. Did anyone even say anything particularly positive about them in the discussion?

Everyone getting a NR. A very big spread on views.

Only 'surprising' vote from me based on results is that I gave MAF a #2 vote. But I explained the previous round why I thought his case was quite compelling.

I agree with your logic - when voters have opinions that seem to differ strongly from others, it would be a lot more valuable if they tried and made a case for said player.

I had neither Rinne nor Rask top 3 but they were both ranked and well respected for countless great performances, Rinne with less goal support than Rask, but both impressing continually.

Top five going in this round. Old Paddy goes through on the first try with a whopping 8 first place votes. I'm giving Rinne the tiebreak over Connell - evenly split on who was ahead on more ballots, both had a single first place vote, but Rinne was the only goalie not to receive an NR, his lowest position being 9th. Like Barrasso and Vachon last round, they are functionally tied.

Cheevers with a tough showing. I wonder if we'll get anybody with a clean 0 across the board in the last few votes?

Not that it REALLY matters, but is this how things are normally settled? I would've thought Connell ahead on "countback" (first and second equals, third advantages Connell)

I suppose if people prefer this way, I can reorder them when I edit the main thread. I don't know if any method is better than the other, I just figured that there being more consensus on Rinne was the higher priority for tiebreaks. That was the standard I used for Barrasso over Vachon, as Barrasso had fewer NRs.

Oh, fair enough then. I was asking because it looks like a traditional countback was used with Barrasso/Vachon too, as Barrasso also has more 1sts than Vachon, meaning there was no need to look at 2nds and 3rds (which was the case with Connell and Rinne).
