He worked with Marty Brodeur with Team Canada but Brodeur works with NJ now. Won't be able to pull him away from there.

Interesting that Friedman said there are 'candidates yet to be interviewed'. Not sure if that's supposition on his part or it's actually the case.

New Natty Hatty tonight haha some interesting tidbits:

1. Shero and Hextall definitely interested. Neither has been contacted. Probably not in the running.

2. McGuire and Chiarelli definitely out of the running.

3. Burke in the running, Karmanos mentioned as confirmed. Armstrong, MacFarland, and Futa mentioned without express confirmation and Al Murray mentioned but with disclaimers as unconfirmed.

4. Belief is first round wraps up tomorrow. Hope is decision by week from tomorrow.

Stage 1 is maybe the qualifier. Maybe these two are candidates that don't need to go through that round? Maybe? please?

Maybe it’s possible that ownership was buying Tocchet’s bullshit until they started interviewing more and more and more guys. Maybe they’re starting to see that the more experienced, more expensive types are saying the kinds of things Sullivan was saying that they didn’t like to begin with. Maybe Sullivan is seeming like a bargain bin version of a top dog and Tocchet is looking maybe a little more phony.

Daaaayyyummm...I hope so. This last quarter century of Coyotes fandom has taught me better than to hope for things like that, though. Haha.

Friedman straight up said there were candidates left to be interviewed, so it's a possibility. He could be implying there's a lot of qualified guys out there (like Shero and Hextall) that haven't interviewed and to not expect them to, though. That would suck. Hard to tell from a quick throwaway line.

Maybe they wrap up round 1 tomorrow, then move to deeper interviews with an eye towards a decision by the 18th/21st?

At this point, if Sullivan has gone rogue and is trying to trade big chips for futures and is crushing Tocchet’s will in the process, I’m all for cheering on the plucky underdog.

This sure has been a rollercoaster. From absolutely not wanting Sullivan because we thought he would be likely to keep RT on board to a complete 180 flip. To feeling hours away from hiring Pierre to him already not making the cut. Excited to see who we hire.

But let me get one thing straight. If we make a decision next Friday, then let's say they start the flowing Monday. That just about gives the new GM TWO WEEKS to prepare for the draft and free agency. The sacred number.

I hope this is the case. Not sure if I want Sullivan as GM, but I would think he is still under contract and would of course get a bump in salary, but he will still be the cheapest, I would think.

Do you have any feeling for what the other team might be?

Just curious because I've had the same vibe and have no clue in hell where I got it from.
Gut feeling says Dallas, maybe Vegas. Dallas is horse country, Vegas is closer to Scottsdale. Doubt a Canadian team due to that old dust up w French Canada.

Bizarre moment on the 31 Thoughts Pod where Friedman says his sources around the league tell him that Steve Sullivan is acting like the GM, making and taking trade calls on OEL and Kuemper and others, and seems like he’s the real GM. Many are saying they ought to just make him GM.

However, Friedman also says he thinks they three people on the interview calls are Meruelo, Jr., and XG. He says he thinks they’re using this while thing to talk in depth with a bunch of execs from around the league and learn as much as they can. As a result, he thinks they are NOT CLOSE to making a decision.

Having said that, apparently Florida was vague about their process, made people think they were still in the game, and then blindsided the field with an abrupt Zito hire. So some of these candidates are salty about what Florida did and don’t want to be used in that way by AZ. So candidates might start to demand details on process and timeline before committing their time and energy.

My own rambling (not Friedman’s):
I wonder if these guys are going to spend 80+ hours talking to execs and hockey people from all over the league, and then just give Sullivan the job anyway. It sounds like there is league support for Sullivan, at least from executives around the league.

Maybe the work he’s doing and the feedback they’re getting is making them more comfortable with him. Maybe more and more the people they talk to seem less aligned with Tocchet’s philosophy and more aligned with Sullivan’s.

Is it possible that they’re simply using this process to educate themselves enough to decide which way to land on the Tocchet vs Sullivan power-struggle?

So the only guy left who has knowingly interviewed is Sean Burke? Is the job his by default?

In my opinion, I think it’s safe to assume it’s going to be either Burke, Armstrong, or Sullivan.

Good. That's exactly what I said they should be doing. They should be talking to anyone remotely interested, and picking their brains about where the team is at, and where they would take it if they were hired.

I honestly don't care how many people they talk to. It isn't the worst plan to just interview literally everyone around and interested and ask them. "We're not happy where we are. How do we get to where we want to be" and basically get a pulse. Especially if you don't have a strong background in this business. Just like it doesn't bother me that they apparently asked Tocchet for input.
I'll get worried when they make a terrible hire. I'm not ready to flip out because of who they are talking to. Especially when some of the names like Chia are apparently the NHL's unwritten version of the Rooney-rule.
If they actually hire someone completely out of left field I'll join in the panic attack.

If they are budget constrained, yes. If not, Craig's tweet seems to imply the field will be expanding soon. They might just be comfortable with Sullivan at the wheel for now.

Based on the names interviewed so far, and the information about Sully...I really wonder if they’ve already basically given him the job, and are actually interviewing a sort of side kick for him? Whether that’s an AGM/VP of Hockey Ops...maybe a President of Hockey Ops position...maybe even some sort of Co-GM type of situation. Who knows...doesn’t seem like any of these guys would do any better than Sully would though. Nothing at all gives me the impression that they would. Sully also has the benefit of having the familiarity with the organization and what they’ve been doing for the last handful of years. If you’re not hiring a Hextall/Shero type, it makes no sense to not just keep Sully. I think they’re interviewing a sidekick.
