Is it a little odd that the Sharks still haven't taken the interim tag off of Bob Boughner? They haven't played a game in 6 months and there are a ton of coaches available right now. What's going on there?

Could be a guy to keep an eye on if Tocchet gets canned (unfortunately his old job in PIT has been filled). As far as Boughner, could be a nice little play to bring in Taylor Hall's old junior coach since Xavier seems so obsessed with re-signing him.

Was not impressed with Boughner's stint in Florida tbh. Would prefer a young face like Van Ryn over a mediocre retread.

I assume the Coyotes would get several favors from the league if they took Chia being pushed on them. I think you'd see the 2021 first returned sometime after the draft.
Maybe a lottery win.

If he came with Paul McFarland, that would be great. Unfortunately, he’s left the Leafs to take over the Shane Wright Frontenacs as HC/GM. He’s most definitely a guy to watch out for in the future. Power play guru with potential for more. Boughner is a big supporter.

I hope we get an experienced coach this time around. I would love a young coach like Van Ryn, but we have to limit our failure rate to the lowest % and I think a proven successful coach does that. As assistant coaches a young up and comer could work.

Grrreat. Son of Tech Tycoon Peter Karmanos. The billionaire who owned the Carolina Hurricanes and was able to give his boy an executive title in the front office once he was done at Harvard.

As if we didn’t already have a rampant Cronyism problem, now we can add Nepotism to the mix.

Seeing as how Alex Meruelo Sr seems to want to insert his own rich boy son into an executive role with the Coyotes, he might as well hire Karmanos who can share the playbook on it.

AM Sr probably sees the Jr Karmanos as the perfect role model for AM Jr.

Good news for Sullivan is that aside from Hextall he is most qualified for the job.

My first pick is Hextall, then probably Sullivan, then probably Futa. Everyone else is a shithead or an unqualified shithead.

Shero?

I like Futa and Hunter more than Sullivan right now, but I don’t have much to base an opinion on in regards to Steve. He hasn’t been doing this long.
Has Hunter been mentioned as real or just like Shero as somebody who would be good but not confirmed as on the list?

Of the names mentioned by Friedman/Morgan, I like:

1. Ron Hextall
2. Steve Sullivan (if he cans Tocchet)
3. Mike Futa
4. Bill Armstrong
5. Al Murray
6. Sean Burke
7. Karmanos
8-10. The TV dipshits

Sullivan has at least negotiated contracts, made trades, and made personnel decisions. Other than Hextall, I don't think anyone else on the list can say the same. Other than Futa from way back in the day in the OHL.

I kinda have Futa/Armstrong/Murray in the interchangeable "good scouts" category.

I give Futa first because of his previous OHL management career, his close relationship with Lombardi and Hextall, and his lengthy career.
I have Al Murray last because he's weird. Haha. Just a weird guy.

Burke could be great. But it would just be lucky for us. He hasn't proved it. Neither have the top scouts like Futa or Armstrong or Murray.

At least Sullivan has run an AHL club for a few years. Nobody else on the list other than Hextall can say that.

It would be ironic to hire a GM who's made a career out of being an excellent amateur scout (Futa, Armstrong, Murray, etc)but has no experience trading players.

I mean, we don't have any draft picks. Any drafting we do, we'll have to trade for the picks first. Lol

The other guys who interviewed with Florida that I haven't seen directly linked to Arizona include:

Mike Gillis
Scott Mellanby
John Ferguson Jr.
Laurence Gilman
Ross Mahoney
Mark Hunter
Peter Chiarelli

to your point, Mark Hunter has been an assistant GM in Toronto and is the GM for the London Knights. He and Dale made the Knights into a powerhouse. He and Hextall are my favorites right now, if Shero isn’t available.

Yeah, I’m reading that as a “would make good candidates” list and not an actual candidates list. Like Shero, who comes up as speculation but never as an actual candidate.

I’d prefer Hunter, too. Same with Shero. But I don’t think they’re actually candidates.

Shero is still getting paid by the Devils through at least the coming season so I can see him being willing to wait for a more attractive opportunity. He has the resume where he can be selective. It's probably a decent pay cheque from the Devils too.

I read it as names he keeps hearing as in the running? Either way, we’ll find out soon. The front office seems more tightlipped than usual. Probably too much truculence lately in the media for them so we’ll probably find out the list of candidates the same day that we find out who is to be hired.

Friedman seemed to have a good idea of who was being interviewed for the Florida job, not so much on ours other than that he believes we have a similar list to theirs.

I just can't see how Hextall isn't the pick here. He's accomplished, experienced, respected, and well networked. His resume is actually decorated with achievements. He built a team largely through the draft that is now 9 wins away from a Stanley Cup. He also has a Cup ring as an AGM in LA. He has touched all parts of the Hockey Operations ladder and worked his way up and earned it. He is superior to all other candidates.

The only two hold ups I could see are:

1. Salary demands. Can't imagine they're that outrageous but he can likely demand 2+ mil. Hopefully Meruelo understands that he's not going to get another bargain bin GM like Chayka. Even the dumbass candidates like McGuire or Weekes are going to command way more than what Chayka made.

2. There is a disagreement on the coach. Either ownership wants to keep Tocchet and Hextall doesn't, or the other way around.

If it meant we got Hextall, I'm even OK with putting up with Tocchet's shit for the last year or part of the last year of his contract. This hiring is so critical to the franchise that that little bit of short-term pain would be acceptable.
