Do you have Target where you live? I live in a non-NHL market and Target is the only retailer to stock non-Series 1 and 2 (flagship) NHL cards in Cleveland and they have MVP available here.

I live between Toledo Ohio and Ann Arbor Michigan. It is about 45 minutes either way for a Target. I love Targets selection of cards, not just hockey typically.

Today Meijer did have a big box of the MVP cards in stock, I passed. Had it been UD I would have been more tempted.

If you're not into base cards or building insert sets, MVP is a pass.

Even at only $40-$50, there are older hobby boxes that are more fun to open.

I liked the Colour and Contours cards last year in MVP, but they were dirt cheap on Comc for most because of ePacks. I don't really like the shape of them this year.

Heck, I'm a set builder and only collect MVP because it's the first product of the season (more about getting hyped up for the new season than anything else).

Just thinking back to base sets. I think I fell in love with the hobby when I first laid eyes on the 96-97 SP set. Just gorgeous.

Man I wish that they didn't basically stop producing hockey cards from the 20s-40s. I love vintage stuff and baseball has so much more cards compared to hockey. THey aren't as expensive either for the lower end base stuff of good players. Hockey vintage cards don't really get affordable till 1954ish Topps and even then, it's usually only under $10 if it's in poor-ish quality.

I am a fan of the 1971 OPC set though, was able to score some of those for a handful of good players and then took to designing customs that look like that set.

So is UD Black literally the only high-end set with serial numbered base cards released so far? They haven't released The Cup, Premier, or Ultimate for 2015-16 yet, bit weird no?

Also, anyone know which forum is best for buying base cards for the higher end products? eBay and COMC work sometimes but they usually overvalue the bases.

I fell in love with hockey through hockey cards. The year was 1991 and I began collecting that years Pro Set in Finland. Was a fun way to learn the game and fall in love with some of the legends of that time.

The all star set was my favorite. Still love that NHL logo and jerseys:

What are the differences in buying cards at a card show vs online? There's no shipping cost involved so I'm thinking that picking up some cheap sets would be better at a card show but what about singles or jersey/autos, are there generally good deals or am I better off sticking to online (I don't really follow book value or know how much somehing is supposed to cost, I don't wanna sell them to make money but at the same time, don't wanna overpay and get ripped off).

Back in the day, Score and Pinnacle would have separate Canadian sets (Score, Score Canadian and Pinnacle + French)

As an example, between two companies, you could get up to 4 different versions of one guy's card

Tim Horton's hockey cards. Worth collecting?
I've gotten about 20 packs so far - some I bought, some my friends gave me who don't collect...

Jonathon Toews - Franchise Force [1:24]
Robbie Fabbri and Shayne Ghost - Fresh Cut Phenoms [1:19]
are the only interesting "rarer" pulls thus far.

Seems like every pack of 3 cards has an insert in the middle. Most are checklist types.

Those prices are ridiculous.

Last year's UD series one blasters are being blown out at Wal-Mart for 13 bucks with tins at 15.

The presses rolled as UD capitalized on McDavid with rumors of pallets of cases unopened still warehoused. Anybody paying huge amounts for McDavid YGs should just wait. Unopened isn't drying up at all.

As for redemptions, just got my Champs McDavid autograph in the mail. For once UD came thru quick.

Hey guys, thought I'd ask here. I've never collected hockey cards before, just the usual baseball, basketball, and football. I want to start collecting just for the fun of it and was wondering what players, or packs, or boxes I should be looking for? I live near Tampa so am a big Bolts fan, but I used to be a huge Hawks/Chelios fan. Any help would be appreciated...not looking to get rich, unless I get lucky.

Tim Horton's hockey cards. Worth collecting?
Am I the only one who is disappointed by the cards this year?

I'm not a collector but I bought... I think 24 packs of this series from Timmies last year. I got them because I liked the designs of the cards. The only inserts I thought were flat out ugly were the checklist cards.

I really don't like the design of the base cards or the selection of inserts this year. And for a set of cards from a fast food place that sponsors Sidney Crosby there is a glaring lack of Crosby represented in the insert cards.

Again, this is the opinion of a non-collector who only bought them based on aesthetics. So in that regard, I am sad. But all the other opinions I've read seem to differ from mine.

Depends what you mean by "worth" collecting.

If you're referring to can you make money off of them.....If you're a card dealer on eBay and you really want to hustle and flip cards, because the Tim Hortons sets are exclusive to Canada, the return on packs when they first come out, even at 2 dollars a piece can be pretty good. If you somehow have a hookup to get them in large amounts at $1 a piece, it would be like printing money. Values are peaking right now because like most cards, these will be at the highest value when they first come out. Even the limited edition binders are easy enough money. They are apparently $15 bucks at Tim Hortons, selling for $40+shipping on eBay. Even after eBay fees, that is an easy 10 bucks.

A big issue is that packs with franchise force cards which are the most valuable regular hits in the set are extremely easy to feel out, or if you buy a huge set of packs weigh. There's a market for people to sell sealed packs on eBay because these aren't available in the US. I would not be surprised if some of the people selling sealed packs on eBay are buying huge amounts of packs, weighing out the FF cards, and then pawning the rest off on eBay to get back what they spent on them and in turn getting $10-$20 FF hits for $2. So if you're from the US and thinking about buying packs off of eBay, I'd be very apprehensive.

This time next year, the cards won't be worth nearly as much and outside of a few big hits, you probably won't be able to get back what you spent on them.

If you mean "is it worth it" to collect them out of enjoyment. I like the idea of the set a lot. It is cheap enough for kids to enjoy. It is priced like a low end product despite having a realistic chance at some mid end type inserts in the FF and the acetate cards. The base set is a challenge to collect at 100 cards and 2 cards per pack, but it isn't overbearing like an OPC base set that has 500 cards. If you only buy the cards when you legitimately were going to go to Tim Hortons any way, or via a friend or family member going and picking you up a pack for a buck with their drink it can be a fun kick to get a pack of 2 base cards and an insert. I probably will have more fun spending $20 on these over a few weeks than I would if I went and spent $20 on a discounted blaster at Wal-Mart.

I think I've gone through 4 packs in the last few days. I had some awful luck on my first pack. Pulled a Hab and a Leaf. What could be worse than that? You'd think they'd split those up. Since then, I've been on a decent hot streak. In three packs I've gotten a MacKinnon base card, a Zetterberg FF, and a Kucherov acetate. I might stop while I'm ahead.

It is a great set for kids to get into collecting because it is dirt cheap, the base cards are shiny, and there is one insert per pack. It's also a good set for adult hockey fans who want something simple and cheap once a year to get into that won't break the bank financially. Although for me, I think going all in and buying a bunch at once would ruin the fun of seeing what can be pulled out of infrequent packs. If you're a hardcore collector who needs a $700 box of cards with a possibility at a game used Gretzky jock strap it might not be all that fun. Obviously the set is heavily subsidized because it is a marketing gimmick, but I enjoy the fact that it is a throwback to cheap carefree collecting that apparently existed before the 90s.

The checklists are awful. It's as if they wanted to ensure that whoever would pull them would be disappointed that they got one. I'd almost rather get 3 base cards than a checklist. It's not so much that they are ugly as they are just boring.

I love the Fresh Cut Phenoms but I am a sucker for acetate cards. I also am a huge fan of terrible 90s style inserts, so the Franchise Force cards being 3D works for me.

I think the base design is a bit of a step down from last year, but it isn't awful. Them being shiny or reflective gives them a bit more of an interesting look than just regular base cards.

Hockey card collecting go ruined by the introduction/flooding of the market by companies like Score, Pro-set, etc. What a waste of money all those cards were. I yearn for the days of the 25 cent OPC pack.

You can still find unopened wax packs on ebay - I wonder how many of them are actually unopened, and not repasted after being checked for RCs?
