Hey guys, was thinking of getting back into collecting hockey cards again. What are the good brands these days? I'm planning to buy a few boxes and open packs and see what I get...

Thanks

Take your time. As I mentioned, Bure is on the list but not one of the super-hot guys like Jagr, Niedermayer, Lidstrom, Hasek and Forsberg.
It's in all honesty mind boggling . I was an avid collector seller in the early 90's via the Hockey News and the SCD magazines...we even had a story/mention in the SCD . I basically walked away in the mid 90's to pursue other interests and have not followed it since .

The grading thing is what throws me off...it would take so much time to go through things . I have some key cards...like a Gretzky RC and it IMO is pretty damn FINE ....and a couple of mid to late 70's OPCsets plus some Pat Roy- 86 -92 sets of course .

As far as card lots...I would have to look...I think I have a 50 or 100 count of Forsberg UD rookies and some Jagr and Sundin Premiere RC's . I also have a lot of Ranger singles from the 50's onward . If it is a crap weekend...I might look through and pull some stuff...sounds like it is the time to sell some stuff . I do however know where there are multiple Gretzky/Lemieux Rookies ....I had a good buying clientele back in the day .

There's literally only 1 brand of hockey cards left. Upperdeck has a monopoly on hockey cards. Series 1 and 2 would be good to start on. Series 1 and 2 are about $200 a box now. SP Authentics will be out in a few months and that's a mid range product although it wouldn't surprise me if those starts at $300 a box at release.

I really can't keep up with box prices anymore. Black Diamond came out today and most places have them at $400 a box...

Leaf products are somewhat cool. Not having the licensing sucks but they do alright I feel.

So...what is a non graded OPC Roy RC worth in that same condition ? That is some kind of return price for a 25 dollar set from a card dealer at the local legion on a Sunday afternoon LOL....
Looks like around $200-350. Ebay sold listings are the best place to look to find the value, though I think they are having some issues with their search recently as a lot of results are missing. Recently found this site that searches ebay and shows you best offers accepted: Search eBay Sales for Sports Cards, Memorabilia and More | 130 Point

too much and it is rarely a 10.
Whoever is at the top of the pyramid must be doing really well LOL.....good chance it is a circle of people and watch out when it crumbles....one would not want to be holding . I remember the 90's and OPC Premier hockey ..crazy times....and Brett Hull RC"s doubling in price in a few hours at card shows .

It indeed is a fever though.......and I also would love to have a box of new packs to crack open but I am not a fan of inserts....never was and never will be . It's been 25 years since I opened or bought a pack.....I always hoped my wife would get me some for Christmas....but that did not happen....got socks instead LMAO....Have fun fellows .

outside of Lidstrom, I have every card shown on that video photo.

but they are all at my parents, and none are graded. I have no idea how much work is involved in grading a bunch of cards. But I guess it would be worth it?

I have Gretzky, Yzerman, Messier, Lemieux rookie cards, but I doubt they would be graded very high..I was a kid and had my cards stored in albums and hard plastics....I'm sure they aren't pristine.

What does it cost to get a card graded?

Any of you guys pick up any Black Diamond lol That Zeree dude hit on a Stutzle but man those prices are insane
Bet that Stutle won't even pay for the box in a few months. From what I've seen you'd be lucky to get $50 back on most those boxes. Sticker auto of veterans are worthless. You'll basically lose on the box unless you hit at least a triple diamond.

is there any point to considering selling cards that are ungraded? maybe do a bulk sale to a collector?

probably they'll just live in my parents basement until I sell them at a garage sale in 15 years.

If you actually have a Gretzky rookie it's in your best interest to have it graded. You're looking at $4000 even if it comes back PSA5.
