U18: Hlinka Gretzky Cup

In the pregame I said most our goals have been tic tac toe and that won't work against the Swedes. It isn't.lol. We need those jam goals and rebounds and we suck at that. And liv grows an inch every minute.lol

I read an article about the Czechs and fitness testing. This year's team tests better than last years. Much fitter... Only area of weakness was pushups... And it shows!

The way you arrive at the view is that it's not all a resume contest pre age 17. You have to use your eyes. All of these guys have great resumes. None of them have generational resumes that they are so far beyond criticizing.

I mean, you're criticizing Catton's resume, yet he led the WHL in U17 scoring, he was 3rd in the WHC17 in scoring (1st besides the non-dominant champion), and now is looking like he'll be one of the leading scorers at the Hlinka, if not the leading scorer, so I'm not sure how this is a resume you'd say cannot be 1st overall. I'm not saying either that Catton's "resume" has no flaws, but I'm not sure how anyone could fairly argue any of these guys are consensus 1OA's. There are a bunch of options at this point, and it's all about who everyone personally prefers for that spot. We'll see if anyone emerges as the consensus option.

It's all about projecting who will have the most success in the NHL. Catton has more electric qualities and less value-based weaknesses (position, offense, defense, skating) than the other options.

I have no idea what you're saying in the first sentence so I'm not sure how to respond to it. I've used my eyes plenty. I've followed these Canadian kids to the extent possible since their Bantam year and I have never once thought Catton was a better player. I do not agree whatsoever that Catton has more electric qualities and I have no idea what a value-based weakness is.

Show me one syllable where I criticize Catton's resume. He's an excellent player in his own right and fully deserving of a high selection this year; I'm simply saying that Celebrini has always been better, even dating back to Shattuck when he made U-18 prep over Catton. You keep referencing the U-17 tournament, where he had a bad virus and could hardly play, as proof that his resume isn't bulletproof. It's a flawed argument.

The Canadian coaching staff didn't just hand Celebrini a top role at the U-18 over Catton. He earned it with his play and clearly justified it throughout the tournament. He was also the only 2006 born in Canada shortlisted for the U-20 team this year over Catton and others. He can't match Catton's play at the Hlinka because he's not there, and he wouldn't be there even without the injury because he'd be attending Canada's U-20 summer camp (if they were physically meeting this year). It's almost like saying Connelly might be just as good as Eiserman because he's tearing up the Hlinka.

I'm no tactical genius, but I think the Czechs should stop taking penalties and maybe score a goal or two.

This game could truly go either way...

Sweden could easily get to 5 and Cechia could easily score 1 or 2 and put it out of reach.

They should allow the Top 3 to advance and the Top team gets a bye.

This Finnish team is undisciplined and unstructured. Not impressed at all.

It is not a complaint but the tourney format is very unforgiving.

Eg. Swiss go 2 and 1 and may not advance.

If Czechs lose.. they will go 2 and 1 and not advance.

If Swedes win by less than 5 they will be 2 and 1 and not advance.

You would think going 2 and 1 would be certain advancement.

Finn's beat Canada with 9 goals and still aren't certain to move on.

Tough format!

Slovakia concede 20 goals in 2 games and Finland can just score 1 on powerplay..

jea this game has loss written all over it.. total catastrophe... coach is traitor

They've been in trouble ever since Marc-Andre D'Aigle left the net.
I keep reading he is the next great Canadian goalie... Only seen him twice and both times he got torched. I know nothing about him and maybe he is the next great hope but my very limited viewings have not been encouraging. I think any Canadian goalie labelled that way is in trouble
