I don’t even know how someone can watch this and think Byfield is a better prospect than Lapierre. Lapierre destroyed him at u17 camp last yr, at hlinka camp this year and will continue to destroy him in this tournanent.

Prospect or player right now?

Byfield is a better skater at 6'5 than Lapierre is at 5'11. Let that sink in...a guy who skates like he does at that size. That's why Byfield's the better pro prospect.

Thanks man, appreciate.

Glad to hear you're enjoying yourself this summer. Yeah, team looks pretty good but it's a bit of a watered down tournament so I keep that in mind. Checking out the games of top prospects is fun too.

Not our fault the USA doesn’t send their best players that’s their choice. It’s the only real best on best age group opportunity for hockey that exists right now with the NHL not participating in the Olympics.

It’s good to see the best team we can assemble for an age group play the Canadian way.

Apparently Russia has brought a pretty good team, that Askarov kid is a top notch goaltending prospect.

It's not a good birth year for USAH, they don't use NTDP players, and their process for selecting the team and preparing for the tournament is deeply flawed.

Folks should be surprised if this team plays well at this tournament.
Ok that clarify things.

Russia looks very good. I think they have a chance for gold.

Finland doesn't send its best either.

You're right, it's not our fault, it just that it tempers my grading of what has been accomplished when we win it.

I certainly enjoy watching the tournament that's for sure.

That’s their own doing.

No leagues are in playoffs right now.

Best on best is defined by each hockey federation having free and unbridled access to their player pool. If they don’t choose the best team they can, that’s their own choice.

It’s the unrestricted access to a hockey federations player pool that makes a tournament best on best. What they do with that is their choice.

Tretiak played infront of a super team who pummeled their opponents.

As the canadians said, laughable. He was a good goalie, not best of all-time.
He played against your NHL deities, you know. And stop talking about smthing you have little knowledge about then. I've watched him play on every possible level. He was the best in the worst era for goalies. And stop belittling soviet hockey. Those teams in the USSR that had no chance agianst CSKA have still won their every series against NHL teams.

I don’t usually agree with many Russian posters, but I fully agree.

The Soviet/USSR era teams were utterly dominant.

Canada and the Soviets are the only two hockey superpowers that have existed.

Canada’s best were still better but the Soviets in 1972 and the Canada Cups pushed us to our absolute brink on many occasions. We made each other better.

Well it is not like you are biased or something.

It is my opinion that Hasek is the best and you have your opinion that tretiak is the best. Lets leave it at that, respect another opinion.

Shouldn’t in the least, that’s their own Federations choice.

Yes it's their choice, but I don't let that keep me from being realistic as to what winning this year after year means. Not saying we don't earn the wins, but obviously we wouldn't be winning as much as we do if each year each top country sent it's best squads. I mean, we absolutely own this tournament to a degree we don't at other international tournaments and there is a reason why. That's no knock on our teams or players, I am just putting things in perspective.

Without the NTDP? I think you know the answer to that. It's summer, a true best on best tournament has to fit everyones schedule. And no, federations can't just pick whoever they want, players have to be released from their club teams. I'm sure the Swedish hockey federation would have loved to fly in Holtz and Raymond.

I will say this, I can see why they decided to put this tournament in Canada some years, look at the crowd today in that Swiss-Canada game, better crowds at the morgue.

Why isn't USA NTDP team in HGC? Has it always been like that?

Their season hasn’t started yet. They don’t bring them in early for this tournament. They play plenty of tournaments against international competition throughout the season and get a lot of exposure facing good competition.
