Said it when he was hired. The TML are not a training ground for rookie GMs.
I also don’t know an organization that hires a specific group, Lou/Hunter/Babs, with a specific mindset and approach and radically changes all that approach 3 years in with a critical RFA collection needing contracts.
It’s like I’m building one thing according to architecture plans and then I throw them away and build whatever in the middle.

Lou/Hunter/Dubas/Babcock by committee reminds me of the Dryden/Quinn/Smith back in the late 1990s. It's like building the conditions for a power struggle...

The GM position needs job security so they're always concerned about the future. Not sure Dubas has that or not right now.

They were trending in the right direction when Lou was here. But he is an old dinosaur like Rutherford. We needed a new vision.
Lou took care of the easy part ;The tank. He made a few good trades but also some bad ones along with some bad signings. I don't think we'd be in any better of a position with Lou or another experienced GM. This is on the players.

First order of business. Build a D core and goalie tandem that compete hard on a nightly basis and brings intensity plus IQ to the team. Start there, fix that and then address the forwards in the same fashion.
Muzzin is a step in the right direction. So far Campbell looks it as well.

Once Babcock was fired it allowed us to get a better idea of what we have with our core. And it ain't good enough - not because of lack of talent, but lack of will and fight

It is clear the players are not good enough to me. Do you think this D can play better ? Marincin is crap. Holl is what he is. Barrie has no clue how to play in his end. Lily and Sandin are kids. Muzz is probably fustrated as hell. Dermott has been so-so at best.

Hopefully they are not on the first tee but I am not so confident.
Every team goes through a couple of rough patches in the season, it happens. This team is too good to have this go on for much longer. We've seen plenty of teams ring off a couple wins and they're sitting comfortably. I'm not saying the Leafs will win 10 in a row, but its not impossible either. At the end of the day, April 5th is the only date we need to think about.

Knew this would come up sooner or later.

re: Hunter - how different would the make up of this team be? He must not have been that sought after in the NHL as nobody went after him, despite rumours, and now he is back in the O. What draft pics/trades would have been different?

Fans are worked up right now, and justly so, with the recent performance of the team. Towards the end of the game last night I was having this exact discussion with someone. They were convinced Hunter was the answer, one reason being because "he played".....well sorry, but Fletcher didn't play, Shero didnt't play, many great GMs did not play. What great moves (aside from drafting Marner) was Hunter really a part of? What questionable ones?

it wasn't a committee , Lou was the GM but like all GM's had a boss (in this case Shanny) and like all GM's received input from those's under him and above before he made a decision which could be overruled by those above

I agree. This team is neutered. I've said for a while now that we need a prime Simmonds or Lucic type. Hard to come by I know, but this team needs someone with balls to show them the way. I couldn't stand Babcock but at least he held these guys accountable. Not that Keefe doesnt either. They come off as a lazy team with no fight. If they had half the effort a team like the Islanders do, they'd be 1st in the conference.

Its obvious that we need another dman. It's been clear for a while. But the players are all underperforming defensively, including the forwards.

whether the team hired Hunter or someone else there's no way they would have made the identical moves Dubas did , people can debate whether or not they would have better or worse but to believe they would have been identical is absurd

one thing i'm fairly confident about is Lou wouldn't have had the terms dictated to by Marleau and his agent about getting out of his final year

Pretty sure the big 3 don't ambush Lou like they did Dubas.
