This is just a formal procedure. I believe all of these players were qualified RFA's who signed deals to play in Manchester during the lockout.

Hickey is still in the Kings plans, as is Campbell. Hickey signed a one year deal with the Kings this past July, then signed a separate deal in September to play in Manchester. In order to stay on the Monarchs roster now that the lockout is over, he and the others must formally clear the waiver process. Now that recall is done with, they could be brought back up once they clear the initial stage.

Yup.

Like I said , I think all these guys will clear waivers. Hickey was really the only guy that Might get claimed.

I still think He will clear, there is some unwritten rule of not claiming teams waiver players they want to keep.

I also still can't believe Muzzin got a camp invite, That guy has sucked all season so far.

Almost, other than the bolded. All of these players are signed. They were all locked out NHLers, however the league made a special exemption for players who were locked out but on a clear day roster last year so that they could sign lockout deals in the AHL.

It's a formality, yes but it's possible some team takes a flyer on Hickey, particularly a team like the Islanders who have openings in their D rather than rush a 18/19 year old...

This isn't true, or teams would never reclaim players after they have appeared on waivers again...and Grabner/Quincey etc would never get claimed...

Holy overreaction Batman!

Lots of teams are putting on the cusp prospects who signed AHL deals during the lockout on waivers. If Hickeys claimed we can nab someone else's prospect as payback.

Not directed towards you Telos, but Muzzin sucks.

We don't have the roster space, it would have to be a waiver eligible player, which would raise questions as to why they are on waivers, not to mention we have last pick.

When did he request a trade? And I don't agree that he's eclipsed by our depth chart..

In the offseason around the same time Bernier did after Voynov and Martinez won their jobs in the cup finals. As far as the depth chart, all our offensive defensemen are youngsters, there are others comparable to him and Hickey has run out of time.

So keep him, play him, and trade Muzzin to Tampa for a third round draft pick. Or Martinez for a second. Maximize assets.

Martinez has proven himself and Muzzin is a different defenseman, one who fills a similar position as Mitchel.

Hickey is not on the level of talent, of Grabner/Quincy those were both pretty dumb moves(even if there is an unwritten rule) to put those guys on waivers.

I like Hickey , he is the best D man in Manchester, but is not talented like the two you just mentioned.

I may be proven wrong, But I think Hickey clears waivers.

Honestly I fail to see what seperates Hickey from Quincey...if anything Hickey has a much better resume than Quincey to this point compared to when he was claimed...

I'm not saying that Hickey will for sure be claimed, or that he neccessarily is as good a Quincey, but let's no pretend that everybody knew Quincey and even Grabner for that matter were all that talented...but the point remains that these are not players that the teams wanted to lose, but they got claimed anyways, there is no gentleman's agreement to avoid claiming players teams want to keep...the way to prevent teams from snaking other team's prospects is that the claiming team must keep them on the roster. So if some team feels Hickey can play in the NHL for them, they will claim.

We shall agree to disagree, there are plenty of players around the league that can play on not so great teams that get waived; and yet somehow don't get claimed.

I guess that just happens...on it's own....

Having just seen Hickey live and in person for the first time, I think he is NHL ready. You have to remember that he's gone through countless injuries and lost a lot of time developing. Plus, defenseman usually take longer anyways. The big thing holding him back over the past few seasons now that he's healthy is still his injuries. While he's healthy, he lost time where he could have developed faster and that allowed people like Martinez and Voynov to pass him on the depth chart while Mitchell and Scuds were added via free agency. IMO the only reason he hasn't been in the NHL as of last year/the year before even is because the Kings felt it would be better for him to play than be the number 7 when Whiskey is perfect for that because he's not going to develop much more, if at all whereas Hickey still could.

I'd really hate to lose Hickey. Call him a bust all you want but I see the kid playing in the NHL one day sooner rather than later.

That's how you feel, clearly not how the other GM's feel is all...GM's do everything they can to improve their team, now or long term...they feel a player can improve their team they do it...

But agree to disagree, if you want.

If he gets claimed, good for Hickey. Cause that will mean the kid will get a shot to play.

I think the Kings are waiting to see how A-mart/Slava/Scuds turn out.

You can't replace Scuds, but say he wants a lot of money. Hickey's game has evolved, he is not some flashy puck mover anymore.

He play's a game like Scuds does, right place, right time(correct hockey play).

And I could see him possibly replacing Scuds when he hits the UFA status again. The battle will come down to him and Muzzin IMO...at least until Kevin Gravel is ready.

Muzzin is infuriating , kid as the tools (size reach) but zero brains.

Muzzin doesn't think the game very well.

Hickey is a bust....injuries hurt him yeah but....guy has just not been able to prove he belongs. Bad draft pick at the time and still is today. If he can't crack the line up with Mitchell injured than he will not have much more of a chance in the future. Des, Forbort, and Gravel will pass Hickey before long. He will be lucky to ever see a game with LA imo.

all that being said, I think he clears.

Defenseman take a long time to develop. Drew is not the norm. Scuds was in the minors until he was 27, Greene was considered a brainless meathead in Edmonton before he came here.

Well Greene could at least defend and still is a brainless meathead at some moments. Lets be honest.

Muzzin was an offensively gifted defenseman in juniors and you can still see that. He will never become a reliable defensive defenseman and is not good enough offensively as pro either. In those few games with the Kings he showed me nothing and from all reports he was a pylon in Manchester as well. Just play Drewiske.

Considering the cap is dropping next season, I expect both Scuds and Gagne to be cut loose.

Hickey was an awful pick, but it happens, atleast in that draft it wasn't to loaded. Same thing happened the next year with the even worse pick of Teubert, but in that case the Kings missed out on a bunch of NHL defenders.

While Teubert and Hickey flopped, the Kings were able to land to key contributors to the cup winning team in those same drafts AMart (2007) and Voynov (2008) with later picks.

Why not? We've got the space even without assuming Gagne is gone.

No we don't. If Gagne and Scuderi are both back at 3 million each, that only leaves 9.5 million with only 14 players signed. Penner will need to be replaced, and Clifford, Lewis, Nolan, Voynov, Martinez, and Bernier (or another back-up goalie) will all need new deals. Also, you want to leave yourself a couple million wiggle room to make a trade or two. Then you need to start thinking that Brown's deal runs out the following year. Finally, these moves basically guarantee that you are not a player at all in free agency. Basically two of Penner, Gagne, and Scuderi will need to be gone next year

Why not? We've got the space even without assuming Gagne is gone.

With the cap dropping to $64.3 next year and Quick's contract going up by $4 mill cap hit, that eats up a lot of our space, not to mention Voynov and A-Mart will each get some sort of a raise. We do have Gagne, Penner, Richie and Scuds coming off the books, but their salaries amount to $11.325 million, and the cap decrease + Quick's raise = $9.9 million.

That leaves us very little $ to replace those four guys, not to mention we'll likely have to replace Bernier as well and if we have to go to the UFA market for a backup it could cost us more than the $1.25 Bernier is getting.

I figured Hickey would be gone sooner or later, but I thought it would be via trade. I guess no teams were willing to give up assets for him.

I won't be surprised if he succeeds somewhere else in the NHL.

I would be quite surprised.

If Hickey had any hockey value, he would have remained a King or some other team would have at least traded a low pick for him. Another team will pick him up, but I see him as an ultra long shot to even make the NHL, let alone to well there.

Oh well, at least it's over - we don't have him to kick around anymore.
