Sad I can't give like HoG. But you know I'd dap if I could.

We're actually expecting our first kid (TMI I know) in the spring, so we've been thinking a lot about names, and we hit on the same compromise that I have now. In the Czech/American system, our daughter is going to have a Western name (including middle which isn't common here) but she'll also have a Taiwanese passport and citizenship so she'll have a full Mandarin name too. She can decide which one to use where, but she'll need a Mandarin name for dealing with the Taiwanese bureaucracy and also my father in law puts a lot of effort into researching cool, old names so I'm okay with him doing the naming in that sphere.
Give like me?

BTW Congrats on the baby news mate. I hope my wife and I can share similar happy news some day soon. In any case, you already know it's a girl? Congrats!

Big big congratulations. Stoked for you, buddy. Will be nice to have one more good, intelligent person in the world.

Yeah I’m stoked. Weird time to bring a kid into the world, but at least she’s gonna have a good record collection, a few old guitars, and a collection of dumb vintage jerseys.
I mean there's never going to be a good time to bring a child into this world. The best we can do is support and make sure their moral compass doesn't get compromised by idiots and show them as much love and compassion as we can.

Mandarin is a fun language to learn. Dated a Chinese girl years before I met my wife, she taught me simple things like this is pretty, hello formal and informal, thanks, etc. Just to make sure I can at least not be odd around her parents lol. She was from Hong Kong and went to school in the UK, that's how we met, Mandarin to me was easier on the ear than Cantonese.

Vietnamese is just what the f***, I can barely pick up phrases and I'm ok enough to remember hello, happy new year, and move out of the way this is hot, lol. Its like speaking a language drunk, the sounds for words, hard C, D, the accents etc. I do hope my Mum teaches our kids Afrikaans and Dutch and Vietnamese from my inlaws. I used to know more Afrikaans and Dutch from my Mum when i was a lad but I am now one of those - replies in English wankers.

I envy your first being a girl. I told my wife I want our first to be a daughter. When is your due date, mate? What does your wife hope for with the Chinese horoscope? I know that was important for one of my mates (he was Taiwanese, his wife from Shanghai, learned a lot about that sort of thing). I can't remember but do the Chinese do the whole 100 day thing?

@Randy Butternubs

Pantheon - It's kind of a neat story, definitely has a few jabs at the real world shit we deal with at least 2yrs ago to a year ago. But the whole idea of uploading your brain/self consciousness is something I love reading about - I believe you were also a fan of Neuromancer and other scifi novels. The whole dilemma of over population, if you're dying of cancer or other disease, uploading your brain/self consciousness being an option - it's like a serious, very serious take on that great show Upload on Amazon. It's two seasons but honestly two is enough. It doesn't need to drag on past it and it's good it ends only at 2. Curious what you think about if whenever your passport name correction fun is sorted and you relieve stress with watching this lol.

It's like a great ode to Dick, Gibson, Isamov, etc. I am curious about other works by Ken Liu now for sure. Especially his Star Wars novel. Reminds me I need to finish Cline's latest novel and hit up Chapters for some new books.

Speaking of Star Wars. What the f*** is that show with Jude Law? It's like some demented Disney kids show with the trademark cringe Disney kids jokes. Rip Star Wars.

Damn dude I just saw this.

Big big congratulations. Stoked for you, buddy. Will be nice to have one more good, intelligent person in the world.
We need more good parents raising kids that aren't dipshits so there's hope for the future.

So apparently china has arcane available but edits to remove anything gay. That’s reasonable enough in s1 but genuinely what even is s2, just remove Vi completely at that point
I can't imagine censoring shows and movies like that but it's a serious reality in places like China, Russia, and some other very religious countries like India and Pakistan as well as a ton of Middle Eastern places. That kind of stuff isn't even odd, it's just the norm to have things censored and finding ways to see the uncensored version.

I remember watching a movie that was heavily edited when my wife and I were on a flight from South Korea to Japan and it was like what the f*** is this? Lol. I can't remember the movie or show at the moment but it was something I had seen and there were scenes missing that made the movie a little odd for pacing and plot.

It explains why so many from those countries are maybe put off by seeing those things that are censored in person, they don't get exposed to it so when they do see it, it's like what the f***?

Thanks brother! It’s a wild feeling. But I’m already planning the proper order of introduction to cosmic Americana for the little girl. Gonna start with GP for sure.

Give like me?

I’m hoping yinz get the good news too, mate. And thanks for the well-wishes! Getting ready to prepare another hong bao red envelope for new year’s never felt so good.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes and congrats. Don’t worry, i’ll be sure to tell her tales of Kostantin Koltsov so she knows her history.

Moana 2 was fairly disappointing compared to the original. Not shocked considering it was being developed as a TV show for a while. It's actually still well made; doesn't feel lower budget really, but you can tell they had a few cool ideas for a series and didn't want to give them up, so they smushed them all together with really barebones connections. And sadly the songs are all just sort of fine.

Also there were a ton of kids obviously and the one scene scared a few into tears so that was something.

The previews really make kids movies look like they're in a real dire state. I just can't get over how soulless all of the live action remakes look/feel.

honestly that's likely fallout from being developed as a TV show. It's not like he's done with Disney, he's doing the new Mufassa movie.

They should have waited until he could do it, and used that time to rework the script some more. That said, the movie is already making bank and I'm sure soulless Mufassa will to, so who the hell am I to say what they should have done

We're looking at a May 1st due date, which is a national holiday here (there's a crazy Czech tradition from the 19th century where it's basically our equivalent of Valentine's Day), so that will be nice. But we already know she's a snake in the zodiac, just like my wife.

Taiwanese don't really do the 100 day thing, but the first month is like mom-stays-in-bed and everyone else takes care of the baby, so my in-laws are flying in to do that for us, plus all the cooking/TCM dishes she needs to eat.

Slowly getting myself some degree of a home gym. Had the treadmill, just added an adjustable bench and dumbbells. My goodness are my arms weak

The only bad thing is that nowhere in my house is quite tall enough for me to fully extend my arms upward when standing without smashing the ceiling, so all of those will need to be sitting versions

That should be fine unless you're doing olympic lifts like the clean-and-jerk or wild kettlebell swings or something.

But no Neil Peart shit in my house.

Well obviously. The only place in which Neil Peart shit is permissable is in Neil Peart's house.

We're coming up on the 4th anniversary of his death, which I may or may not have memorized and take a day off for every year. I sit in the dark and listen to YYZ and cry.
