Does anyone know an estimate of how much someone would need to make to live in NYC (either Brooklyn or Manhattan) without a roommate?
I'm applying for jobs and I hate that damn question of "How much are you looking to make?" before I even get an interview.
My advice is not to force an apartment.
It's really expensive for w one person apt. Find a deal that works for you.
To put that in perspective, I'm living with a room mate in a duplex on the upper east side and paying less than my girlfriend living further up town than me on the west side.
I'd say avoid starting your rent in the months of May-August. Landlords inflate rent 10-20% because they know college kids will flood NYC looking to buy any apt ASAP.
Looking at the salary range meguesta gave and I for a 1 person even in Brooklyn or Hoboken, 60k is not enough.
I'd say 70k bare minimum and even then you're probably barely scraping even with your salary.
Other expenses you need to account for:
City tax on salary. MTA monthly pass. Food expenses (NYC is incredibly expensive). Social expenses - bars, eating out, cabs, random expenses you don't account for.
70 is on the light side. I'd say 75-85 would be enough so that you live in a 1 person. Account for a little bit more if you have student loans.
